    I have a hedgehog called Sonic. They are pretty great as long as you hand train them. He is my third hedgehog. Good on this kid. If we can have them in Alaska they sure as hell should allow them in Kansas.

    Hedgehogs shouldn't be pets - and animals shouldn't be given as Christmas presents in general.
    I'm helping a few hedgehogs that visit our garden to prepare for winter if they need to gain weight, but I would never want to have what should be a wild animal as a pet.
    Kudos to the kid for being active politically to get what he wants, but it still doesn't justify what he's doing to this animal (the store who sells them as pets is to blame as well of course).

    Hedgehogs are illegal in several states, largely on the basis that there are no native species of hedgehog in the Americas. It may seem stupid, but remember that there are no native species of rabbits in Australia, either, and now thanks to a failed attempt at raising them as livestock they have the infamous "rabbit-proof fence" strung across the country from top to bottom so rabbits don't invade the rest of the country and screw up the ecology for all their native species. Yeah, hedgehogs _probably_ won't explode in numbers like rabbits in Australia, but the only way to know for sure is to make sure they never get the opportunity. Most states allow them, probably on the basis that they aren't a common enough pet that there's any real likelihood of them actually breeding in the wild. The other concern is that some species of hedgehog are considered protected, so some states specifically prohibit those species, and others might not feel like keeping track of the distinction.
