Not talking just about this game, but about other games too. What´s the problem of having titles aimed to children and/or with childish cartoons and themes? Not everything has to be "Oh so fucking mature it will rip your face off" kind of thing.
"The Lord of the Rings: Aragorn's Quest covers the events of the series' three main books, breaking them into missions that exist as a story being re-told by an older Samwise Gamge. The game's hub is the Shire of just after Tolkien's saga. Samwise is major. Aragorn, elsewhere, is king. The player controls a young hobbit, Frodo Gamge"
I thought at first you meant Sam had a son that he named after Frodo, but if the story is a retelling, shouldn't the surname be Baggins?
@Everard: Samwise did have a son named Frodo, He also had one called Bilbo, in fact he had 13 chidren, he was a very horny hobbit. Out of those 13, only 3 of them ever had children.
*Had the books beside me so I checked the Falimy Tree in the appendix :)
LotR has always been for kids in my eyes so I see no problem, nor does it really look any more kiddie than say Wold of Warcraft, Tales of Vesperia or any pretty much any JRPG. Just because itn't trying too look like the movies doesn't make it kiddie, but maybe it means it wont be just another crappy movie-game
@-MasterDex-: I read them when I was 11 and liked them quite a lot; reread them a few years ago and did not, so they suited me better as a kid anyway. The movies are PG-13 if I'm not mistaken, and were pretty big with the kids. It was pretty big with everybody though, but still...
@beril: I've reread them a few times now and I still like them as much if not more than the first readthrough, I love the whole mythology that Tolkien created. Perhaps books like the Simarillion or the History of MiddleEarth books would interest you more nowas they take a more mature (albeit still tame) approach to storytelling.
Silmarillion is probably Tolkien's Magnum Opus. The HoME series is more for the VERY hardcore Tolkien nerds though (I have the entire series in my bookshelf, but I still haven't gotten around to read it). Unfinished Tales and Children of Hurin might be better recommendations, maybe? And Bilbo's Song, even if it's just a short poem.
@Combichristoffersen: Yeah, Unfinished Tales would be a good choice. Haven't gotten around to picking up Children of Hurin yet though, I've not finished the HoME series either.
Having typed that, I've realised how long it's been since I sat down to a good book. I really need to set aside the time to do so.
I have Children of Hurin too, but I haven't gotten my ass around to read that either, lol. I'm still working my way through H.P. Lovecraft Omnibus 1-3.
And a minor correction: It's Bilbo's Last Song, not Bilbo's Song.
@Combichristoffersen: Now there's an idea for some reading. I've read a few H.P Lovecraft stories like Call of Cthulhu, Dagon and Shadow of innsmouth here and there but they're all that spring to mind right now. I might see if I can pick up one of the omnibus next time I'm passing a bookshop.
@-MasterDex-: I can definitely relate; I've gone through LotR about ~15 times in my lifetime, earliest being in the 5th grade, and most recently in an undergrad English class.
Tolkien certainly has lasting appeal, and it's an appeal that applies to all ages.
That said, I still haven't managed to get myself through Silmarillion... >.<
This sounds pretty cool, I'm interested in anything to do with Tolkien, so I'm on bored :)
"It looks like World of Warcraft". Because, y'know, before World of Warcraft no game had cartoony graphics. Blizzard invented the look, they could even get a patent if they wanted.
I agree that the premise of the game was a great way to go, playing as Sam's son; a very clever idea.
I like the idea. A clever way to make a way too over-exposed license interesting again. Kudos to the developers/publisher for coming up with an interesting take on LoTR.
@fastpotato: If you watched the trailer you'll also notice the playstation logo, unless Nintendo are into helping out their less well off neighbours, that alone completely invalidates your comment.
@StratfordX: You get a heart from me for your comment.
Also, just to clarify, I'm assuming you're being ironic about Gears, since it's one of the most homoerotic franchise this generation, but I just wanted to be sure, because if so, you sir, are a funny mofo.
@fastpotato: It has been my experience that the people who most often use the word "gay" to describe something they don't like are the players on Xbox Live who (for some odd reason) are doing the most tea-bagging.
Of course there's nothing wrong with the old 'balls in the mouth' routine to humiliate that guy that just tried to bounce his way to victory and failed miserably. Gay? Yes, but it's all about the domination.
@SatansBestBuddy: Why call it anything before you get your hands on it? Do like the rest of the grownups, watch the coverage and decide if you're interested or not. If you're not, then don't bother posting about it. If you are, then let us know what you thought after you play it to help inform those who haven't gotten it yet.
That being said, I'll be watching this game. I've been looking for a gaming version of LoTR that small kids might be able to enjoy without too high a learning curve or too much scary imagery. This looks like it will fit the bill and might actually be engaging for adults as well if it works somewhat like zelda and mario games.
And I loved BOTH Batallion Wars games. But I thought they were done by KUJU London or some such. Maybe the second one was handed off or something.
The "One Night in Bayou" song actually makes me feel sick listening to it. If you think a song can't do that, pay attention to the lyrics, although the opening to that song is pretty funny.

This game seems to be a cool concept.

I can imagine a realistic Mario game. An halucinating Italian plumber jumping on turtles and throwing them at people while picking up 'princesses'
