And of course this is all going on the hope that Avatar is actually going to be a good game right? What a load of hype for something we don't really know anything about!
How lame. I have a very nice 55" widescreen TV that came with my house, and it lacks an HDMI port. Guess I won't be buying your game, then, James Cameron.
VGA does 1080p as well, all 360's will work with VGA, and you can buy the cable here: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=108&cp_id=10830&cs_id=1083005&p_id=4010&seq=1&format=2

But I think the concern here is not whether its 1080p capable but rather it has the bandwidth to support stereoscopic 3D. I see no reason why VGA wouldn't support it.
@supo: VGA does 1080p as well? I have one of those - used it to plug it into my monitor. Someone was saying the quality is shittier than the component though. Thoughts?
And you know, if my little VGA cable does do 1080p, I suddenly feel so much less bad about not having HDMI on my old first-generation-sounds-like-it's-going-...360 console.
What is the resolution I choose for that, do you know? Never could figure that one out...
@The Forgetful Brain: Well, at one point it was washed out, but there was an update long ago that added a setting to correct it. Also, the reason it looked like that to begin with was most likely MS cheaping out on some of the hardware.
At one time the 360 didn't support 1080p at all, but another update fixed that, and that restriction was completely artificial.
The usual resolutions would probably be 1366x768 (seems to be the typical native resolution for 720 LCD HDTVs, but otherwise it might be 1280x720, or 1024x768 if you use a projector or a "720p" plasma TV. I say "720p" in quotes because a lot of plasma tvs are actually 1024x768, and the pixels are rectangular to give the illusion of the 16:9 aspect ratio.. big ripoff IMO.
The TV has to respond "OK i displayed the frame, switch the glasses eye" through an HDMI signal.
If the TV and console are not perfectly synched your brain will have a rough time
I doubt the guys at MS will want to use the VESA data transport to do the same thing, they ll just concentrate at HDMI.
I have a 360 without an HDMI port. I also have a 1080p HDTV set. I'm using component cables and have the 360 enabled to 1080p display and my TV even says 1080p display when the 360 comes on. So I'm running 1080p without HDMI. So why wouldn't this 3D Avatar thingie work for me?
@Contra666: I was always under the impression that Component lacked the bandwidth to do 1080p. but apparently thats not the case. Either way component is an anolog signal, which is why it can't do 3D. HDMI spec has a few bells and whistles that lets it do 3D. still need a 120hz TV though.
ok, i was wondering what this was all reallly refering too but i forgot the origiinal xbox's didnt have hdmi slots.go to walmart, buy new xbox, return old xbox in its place bam, insta hdmi slot, and i do realize the consoles have the console ID code that walmart keeps track of, but im sure all you incredibly smart people can find a workaround
Seeing as how "3D" games are, 99.999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999% of the time 3D graphics rendered on a 2D plane in such a manner as to give the illusion of depth, I guess if you don't have a HDMI cable you'll just be playing a 2D game? So then, will it be a side-scroller? Or a top-down RPG?
If Microsoft would allow me to buy a HDD transfer cable all by itself, I would buy a new 360 with HDMI and transfer my data over to a bigger hard drive.

@EnigmaNemesis: They're charging for them now. I just had another 360 bust on me so I bought an Elite. When I called MSFT they asked how I would like to pay. I expressed my displeasure that I was having to pay to be able to transfer content from a machine that was bust to a new one and they suddenly decided I didn't need to pay.
@Sylar will take the power from Crecente's hair: That is not true anymore (I do know it was at one point), the data transfer kit supports the 60GB now. I got one cheap when Circuit City was closing and transfered to it from my 20GB using the kit MS sent me. I did not have to pay for this kit at the time, but this was 3-4 months ago now?
My 360's one of those crappy old ones with only component. The worst thing is, the last time my 360 RROD'd was AFTER they started replacing the systems with HDMI consoles.
@Archaotic: Yeah, they didn't replace my second one with an HDMI console. I just sent back my third RROD (I know, I'm cursed), so maybe third time is a charm and I'll get an HDMI console with a quieter Jasper chip...
@yeah write: When this one goes, I'm going to tell them they either replace it with an HDMI-compatible console or I won't buy games for the system anymore. I need HDMI, the TV I have (now that I'm not living with the roommate with the 42" plasma screen) doesn't allow for progressive scan input through component.
@Archaotic: Is the warranty expired? The xbox customer service employees don't seem to really know what they are talking about so its quite easy to fool them. Send it back claiming its broken and then hope you get an hdmi. ;)

Are you just saying that you have to have HDMI to run the game in 3D? I don't think anybody on here will really be affected...

*edit: Man, I'm really behind the times on this one. I had no idea that there was even such a THING as a 3D enabled TV.

I think the resolution 16:9 720p LCDs is actually 1366x768. You are correct about 720p Plasmas.

Component DOES do 1080p.
VGA, Component and HDMI all support 1080p (as long as your console has been updated since the end of 2006).

I have 1080p through component. My TV is even telling me it's 1080p. I also have my PC connected to my TV and that's DVI to HDMI and that's also 1080p
