Price kills it %100 for me. If it were $130, or even $150 I'd be considering it, but for just 30 bucks more I can buy myself a freaking XBox 360. It's just ridiculous. For what? A shorter battery life and a couple of lousy cameras? My phone that I carry in my pocket at all times already has a camera better than it.
Besides, I'm tired of Nintendo introducing better hardware in the middle of the system. If you've been with Nintendo as long as I have you'd know new hardware like this NEVER, and I mean NEVER gets used. A couple of new first party games, sure, but 3rd parties don't jump on new hardware for a good reason. To me, this "better hardware" justification means nothing because nobody ever uses these types of upgrades. Oh sure, it's an awesome PR statement saying "POTENTIAL, POTENTIAL, POTENTIAL", but the last time I bought into the "potential" crap was when I bought the Wii and I've been sorely disappointed since then. No, from now on show me the games and I'll come. I could care less about potential if it's never used.
I'll probably get one when they give me a reason, but I'm more than happy with my original DS until then. I don't play many GBA games, and I still have my GBA SP if I want to play them, but I just don't see the point in spending my money to buy this right yet.
"Pictochat remains unchanged and is still missing the ability to go online."
Not entirely true. Now you can exit out of PictoChat without having to turn off the system. And you can draw in a rainbow pen. Still 100% compatable with DS/DSLite (in fact, they even play a different chime when DSi sends messages). With the DSi having upgradable firmware, it's possible for them to add on to PictoChat's functionality at a later point. Not likely, but possible.
And, personally, I found the DSi Browser to be great. Yeah, its lack of multimedia support and low cache sucks (I can't even read Kotaku comments on DSi), but it's to be expected of such a low-powered machine (even PSP has quite a few quirks...).
As far as pictures go... Maybe's it's possible to edit the EXIF data on other images to trick the DSi in thinking they're DSi pictures?
Crecente Crecente Crecente....wasn't it you (or maybe it was Ashcraft) that said that their son loved it?? Nintendo didn't make this for you or I; they made it for the kids!
I saw the real one myself and I should say there is no reason at all to abandon my DSL. Camera is really crappy, impossible to take a nice shot in low-light environment. Picture editing tools are fun ... for like 15 minutes. I'll wait untill they decide to release a paper-thin stanles-steel DS
@devilgunman:If your buying the DSi for it's cameras, your doing it wrong. I'll just say that now, because if they meant the cameras to be a major selling point, they would be more powerful.
The massive hardware upgrade is why you should be buying it, along with improved Wii integration and the DSiware shop.
@Chunky-MonkeyLOL: I upgraded, and everything is better on the DSi than on the original DS. I can see how its not a major leap from the DSlite, but if you're coming from the first generation, it is well worth the money.
Your DSfat isn't going to be worth much, so you may as well hang on to it to play your GBA games.
The internet browser is more of something to blame Opera for isn't it? Or has it been proven that the DSi can't handle Flash and whatnot?
For me, upgrading was a no brainer. If I -really- feel the need to play GBA games, I still have a GBA player and a GBA, but for me, the time for GBA games is long, long past, I never cared about the rumble cart and didn't care about GH, though for someone with a huge library of GBA games or GH, I can see the issues.
@Legendary Hoamaru:Speakers are louder, not super so, but it's louder then a Phat or Lite for sure.
And last time I checked, flash cards are already working on the DSi, so people don't have to be too upset, but older cards won't work.
Agreed mostly. The inability to import images is especially bothersome. Anyone know if an image taken on a DSi can be manually loaded onto another DSi? That would at least be a slight silver lining. Either way, it's absolutely ridiculous that you can't view non-camera images on the DSi.
Guess it's to prevent DSis filled with porn. Wait, I can do that still. It just wouldn't be high quality XD
Incompatible chargers is one the most irksome issues with consumer electronics, especially in this case when the DS and DSi are virtually the same device.
I've played the Lite, the sound is superior, the screen's color are superior, but I'm a cheapskate, and $180 for the same system with new bells and whistles is not my idea of good planning.
@bfwings55: I wouldn't say the DSi is terrible. If I didn't already have a DS lite, I'd get the DSi but I just don't see enough reason to make an upgrade.
A better D-Pad and the camera feature (Which I know I'll never use) aren't worth the upgrade. I don't mind the lack of the GBA port on the DSi because Nintendo did the same thing with old GB games with the first version of the DS.
@bfwings55: Battery life. I don't want to have to recharge my portable system more than I have to. I did research on both, and decided to pick up a DS Lite on Monday instead of a DSi.
Also, my impulse-buy money is totally going to XBLA already, not DSi Ware, though that's a more personal matter.
@bfwings55: How about this: Instead of buying a system on promises of potential, how about avoiding any chance of buyers remorse and just wait for the potential to come?
You don't want to end up like PS3 owners in 2007, do you?

Yeah, but now it has a scratch prone casing. Is that a worthy trade off? What do you guys think?

Ok, you lose the GBA slot. But you gain a buttload of other features.
And the D-Pad is MUCH better. That's my biggest plus.

The two things that bother me about the DSi:
Price & Location of the Power Button
What was wrong with the switch?
