I loved my Dreamcast and also liked my Saturn. I loved Skies of Arcadia. Easily one of the best RPGs I have ever played. But I think Soul Calibur was the game that sold the system to me.
Sega had so many good and unique game ideas but they all fell on the wayside and never became popular with the majority. Too bad I say, people missed out on some great games.
I think the most compelling thing about the Dreamcast is the stuff Sega seems to have abandoned. The original Crazy Taxi was awesome, as was Jet Set Radio.
It's a shame, because when they do try something new, they just don't know how to market it. A Dreamcast sits next to all my (thankfully, backward-compatible) current-gen systems. Because dammit, sometimes a man just wants to play Cannon Spike.
It says something about the appeal of the DC that people still "celebrate" the release date every year and share their memories of it. No other console has that happen, not even "superior" ones like the PS2/SNES/NES.
@KaneRobot: i think that's more because they have superior successors which people are playing where as there is no replacement for the dreamcast. maybe that means its more uniqe? or maybe it just means gamers are occupied with new superior games rather than being held back.
@trevortibble: Not an unfair point, but I still can't really agree fully. This console was something special. I doubt we'll see anything like it again.
Sure, the reaction every year has something to do with the launch date being easily memorable, but really, the console was strong enough in quality titles to stand on its own in history even without that.
This year I moved from my home town to a bigger city, in the beggining of the year (february). Even after months I still don't know my neighborhood that well, there's still a lot to explore around here.
Anyway, this is DC related. I was just searching for one online on our version of ebay and I found out that the store selling it is in the same neighborhood I live now.
When I found the address I discovered that the place selling the DC and all kinds of awesome oldies is located below the street where I live now, a few blocks away.
I'm extremely excited and I'm going there tomorrow to grab my DC! :D
here's what i don't get: why is there so much love for the dreamcast? it failed for a good reason: it was garbage. people wanted to go forward and that was what the ps2 offered.
it had nothing on the ps2 in every respect. i don't understand why people bother to list dreamcast games since sony held (and still holds) the greatest library in gaming's existance.
@HolyOrangeCows: I smell someone trolling or someone who never owned a Dreamcast to know how awesome it was and how amazing it could have been had things went the right way.

Thanks for some of the most original crazy games, Sega...
IMO the Dreamcast really epitomized consoles having an "identity" as the first party titles had a very distinct Sega feel to them. Nintendo also does this very well, but I haven't been much of a fan of it since SNES. I love my Playstations - I have every generation of them - but there's really no cohesive Sony feeling, it's just a platform. Even in some new Sega games, there's something aesthetically distinct about their titles. Their games felt like they loved making games.
@fuchikoma: I agree with you on every single word that you're saying. Except that you are not a fanboy, you're a fan, because you play consoles from other brands (just like me). But I agree that there was a cohesive feel to Sega, just like there is one with Nintendo. Sony consoles are all awesome but they're more like a cluster full of good games with no cohesive feeling.
At some point in the past: Due to the huge demand and critical praise for both Shenmue and Shenmue 2, the Shenmue saga is completed with the most expensive and amazing game ever. At its conclusion Ryo uppercuts Lan Di into the cannon of a Gundam that was firing into a crowd of Nazi Zombies from the future. Its even more epic than it sounds.
Oh and Sega makes a 2d Sonic game with 3d textures and resolution that is widely considered to be far superior to any Mario game released. Nintendo keeps releasing Mario games with annoying characters and lame plot/gameplay devices nobody wants. Many call for a return to old 2d Mario games. Nintendo ignores them.
I wish the Xbox had failed instead of the Dreamcast. Then maybe we would still have platformers and RPGs and games that are ACTUALLY innovative instead of goddamn millions of shooters. Although best case scenario would see them all surviving, or SEGA buying the XBOX somehow.
@Placentasaurus: Shooters are everywhere. Stop blaming the Xbox for what the average western taste is at these days. Shooters would be big anyway because people happen to like them...
I always felt the Xbox was an extension of the Dreamcast.
I mean you had that really strong SEGA support going for it with Jet Set Radio Future, Panzer Dragoon, Gunvalkyrie, among other games.
Not to mention they both had very similarly designed controllers, as well as both having a Microsoft OS on them. They both had the whole online gaming thing going for them. And of course, both Dreamcast and Xbox had Peter Moore.
I never had a DC. I was 16 and didn't work, my father gave me a PS1 and wouldn't understand why I wanted another console. When I started to have my own money the DC was gone... but I will buy one this year.
Of course they wouldn't call it the Dreamcast 2, as Sega was never big on adding numbers to their consoles. Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast....hell, we'll call it the Sega Revolution. Why not?"
Yeah, exactly, that's exactly what I said on TAY today. I loved the fact that each console was like its own universe. I loved the way they named the consoles...
I'll admit right now that I've never seen a Dreamcast in person.
Just only in pictures, because I never knew anyone who had it.
One thing that always stuck in my mind was how uncomfortable the controller looks. Talk about cramp hands and I thought the first, old gigantic Xbox controllers cramped up my hands.
Remembering the days of rumor that surrounded "Dreamcast" as far back as Winter '97, I would add a few different "key decision changes" that really were on the table at the time:
9.9.99 - Sega of America releases the American version of the Sega Dreamcast to the masses, and it sells like crazy (Which actually happened.) Along with the free Sega Dreamcast t-shirt (I had the orange one), you get a collectable VMU (didn't happen), DVD-ROM with DVD playability (Could've happened) and Sonic Adventure as a pack-in (could've happened, though it sucked balls.)
NOTE: Sega were weighing the option of the DVD diode versus the CD diode and went the cheap route. It turn out to be the wrong call, since Sony's DVD playability made it the more attractive choice. Also, the DVD-ROMs in that day were $20-$40, making piracy less attractive in the earlier days of that generation.
11.15.99 - SegaNet becomes a fully immersable experience with avatars (think Phantasy Star Online), lobbies, and portals to online gameplay, messages, demos and more. The free version limits you to talking in the lobbies, while on-line play requires a subscription fee (Would've been nice.)
NOTE: SegaNet were abysmal, and using it were a less than stellar experience. The only fun I had on-line with a Dreamcast were when I were playing PSO Version 1.
