A Handheld Just For Text Adventures?

Sure. Why not? There's handhelds for all those fancy games with their graphics and tapping and analog nub control schemes, so why not engineer one so you can play Dwarf Fortress on the bus. It's a question Florian & Rob are asking over at Boing-Boing - complete with fancy mockups - and it's one an adventurous maker of small, handheld computing devices could do well to ask themselves. Provided you could trick them into thinking the market for one would be bigger than it actually is.

Handheld Wars: DS vs PSP vs iPhone

Comparisons between the DS and PSP were played out years ago. Especially when you consider the DS doesn't give a hoot about what's under its hood. But you know what, fuck it, let's dredge the subject up again, because RoughlyDrafted have compared the tech specs of both handhelds and put em up against the iPhone. Their point? Showcasing the potential Apple's phone has in the gaming arena. Click through for the full, grisly details. More »

Retro Terrorism, part I

I'm very interested in airports and airport security. In fact, at Persuasive Games we have made not one but two games about airport security. But, what about earlier games about airports and terrorism?

As a part of their series of solar powered LCD handheld games, Bandai released Airport Panic in 1982. One of the neat things about this game is that it had two game levels, and the scene changed depending on which one you were on.

In the first, you have to cross the tarmac to the plane while avoiding the hijacker's bombs. Then you board the plane (this is where the scene changes) and have to traverse the rows to shoot the hijacker and "rescue the stewardess and the passengers."

When Gonzalo Frasca showed me this game today, I was reminded me that I actually have one, fully packaged, somewhere in my collection stash. I should find it and take it on my next flight. You don't need to go to those extremes though. You can download the manual scans and a PC emulator.

"The Future of Handheld Innovation"? New Cradle For the GP2x

Korean company Gamepark has released their "GP2x Commercial Interface Board Cradle" to go with their GP2x open-source, emulator friendly, Linux powered handheld. It's only compatible with their system, but it looks really neat and versatile - having gotten wicked hand cramps/eye strain from spending too many hours on trans-Pacific flights playing my DS, the idea of having other options (mouse! keyboard! game pad! TV!) seems really appealing. More »

Analyst - Handhelds Outselling Consoles Within Four Years

I know the DS is selling like limited edition gold-plated hotcakes across the known universe, but could it propel the handheld market beyond its console cousins? DFC Intelligence analyst David Cole seems to think so.
"Under the right scenario, by 2011 the combined installed base of the DS and PSP could exceed that for the Nintendo Wii, Sony PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Xbox 360," said Cole.

Under the right scenario I could be a cross-dressing belly dancer living in Bolivia by the year 2011. Gotta love the analyst speak. "If everything happens in such a way to bring it about, this could happen." Brilliant. More »
