Good on them! The Game Boy truly was revolutionary in the way that it used its resources at hand and popularized handheld gaming for many!
And no other gaming platform really was as popular as the Game Boy was at the time or ever since. And if there's one thing Nintendo always had a grip on, it was the handheld market. #gameboy
It's difficult to explain but whenever I see the old school Gameboy I have this strange nostalgic vibe where I remember exactly what it felt like to be a kid again. It's more intense than mere nostalgia. Suddenly I remember exactly the kind of foods I would eat, the smell of my old house, how much bigger everything seemed to be.
It's amazing how such a simple object can elicit those kinds of intense memories that would otherwise be dormant.
@Kitty: Whenever I hear the tinkly Super Mario Land theme music, I flash back to sitting in art class in school, the smell of paint and turpentine. With the Tetris theme, it's a long road trip on Christmas Day, the dawn turning to morning on Highway 5. That's just the audio. Seeing those green-brown ghostly little LCD images is like being in a freakin' time machine.
I suppose our grandparents had their tiddlywinks and the Game of Life and model airplanes... we had our chunky little Game Boys. #gameboy
@Sustenance: The music to the original Pokemon will always make me think of the trip my family made out to Death Valley :) Funny how songs also can get ingrained into places or events. #gameboy
I remember as a 9 year old, my family was super dirt poor. We were bouncing around between Domestic Violence shelters and life was extremely difficult for myself, my mother and sisters who were just babies at the time.
I never had any of the things my classmates and neighbors had but one day, my mother surprised me with a GameBoy. It came with Tetris and that might have been the happiest moment in my life.
Very few people had it at that time and I drew a lot of attention for the first time in life - while not being made fun of for my ragged appearance.
I played the GB until I was putting dead Duracell batteries in the freezer - thinking making them really cold would give them some more juice.
I played Tetris until I got so good that the pieces were just blurs on the screen. That was the only game I had for a long time but I never enjoyed it any less.
Thinking back on those horrible days, the GameBoy was the one thing I had that brightened up those days - until my 4 year old sister snuck it out of the house one day and left it in a phone booth and never to be seen again.
The GameBoy has always been in my personal Hall of Fame.

@Cptn.PaxtonAstypalaea(Corsair): Not me. What would be strange about it? Its was sold in the USA. Its the best portable toy since Stick man How I loved Stick....I cant believe Rock didnt make the list or Mud man. I could have wasted a whole day back then with a Stick a Rock and some Mud. #gameboy
What part is strange? The fact that something that is constantly being scape goated for a higher obesity rate in children is being promoted for once? #gameboy
@Everyone: *sigh* You lot all completely missed the point I was trying to make. It was sold in the USA, but wasn't it designed and created by a Japanese company? I mean, I thought something National would be, you know, patriotic? And not include things that, well, belong to another Nation?
My Nan brought me my first Game boy, that big red chunky behemoth, along with Super Mario Land and James Bond (best fucking Bond game EVER!), for christmas when I was 7.
I loved that thing so much, I still have it somewhere. In fact, I think I have about 4 original game boys in my house, including one covered with worn stickers of Pikachu, Scyther, Jigglypuff and Nurse Joy that were free with Nintendo Official Magazine! Ah, the nostalgia.
I salute you, Game Boy, for a childhood of brilliant handheld gaming!
@QualityJeverage: Dude, who wouldn't be!? That was like, every kids dream in the late 80's. That and maybe getting to first base with one of the female American Gladiators. XD #gameboy
Ahh, the Game Boy... I remember the first time I saw someone with one and was blown away. I saved up for what seemed like years to be able to get one. When I finally did, it was bliss. I've had my share of games and electronics, but the Game Boy will always be part of my childhood. #gameboy
@pax et agape: Things like this confuse me as an Iowan. Why Ottumwa for the video game hall of fame? Is there a development studio or anything relevant there other then the hall of fame.
This has to be the first instance of someone voluntarily flying in from the U.K. to Iowa.
On a side note, this is the first comment where I have clicked outside the box without having my comment go missing. I had heard that problem was fixed, but I had become superstitious.

Granted, I haven't been here very long.
In general, Iowa is known for 3 things: corn, pigs, and Ashton Kutcher.
VIdeogames? No, not so much.
