I've been in sleuthing in their forums for the past week, and from what I've seen, we're in for a treat...

That said I can picture Valve getting involved now... it's a quality product that legally has to be released for free unless Valve give their say-so... and you can bet they smell the potential green they could garner from picking up a product for practically nothing (As the devs have nothing to lose by accepting whatever they're offered)!

Oh such a pity... So exited about it after everything, and TBH I've had the feeling since, oh, October that "Well.... Maybe, probably not."

I'll wait for quality though... Go BM team, go!

Valve should be marketing the game if anything. Its the same thing they did with Portal and it made them big "smell like the vault" bucks.

It's a shame it wasn't ready for the years end, revisiting Black Mesa would have been a great way to spend the holiday season.

Push it, guys! Get it done before Summer 2010!

"Wonder if Valve are, at the 11th hour, lending a helping hand, at least in terms of promotion?"
I think its could be more of a case that before the 11th hour Valve were being obstructive to its release. The do have HL:Source, a product that technically is competing with this free mod.
Of course I hope Valve wouldn't be doing that.

I honestly believe that Valve would have said something by now rather than "Hey, you guys, stop all this stuff in here, eh?" right before they are done.

@Kicken: No I don't mean Valve jumped out the bush at the 11th hour to stop them, but hadn't given a blessing on the project up until recently. perhaps they halted the project for fear that when completed there work would be for naught if Valve stepped in to stop it.
Kinda how Left4Winchester just unravelled due to fear of litigation.

    @deanbmmv:
Fear of litigation... from Valve? Well, that would make no sense, as it's a mod for Left 4 Dead. And, well, that's what Valve wants.

More likely, fear of litigation from whoever owns the rights to Shawn of the Dead, correct?

Being that Valve supplies mod tools for each of it's products, I'm going to say that Valve is pretty chill with the bros when it comes to mods like this.

@deanbmmv: You need to own a copy of HL2 to play this game. This also doesn't violate the terms of service. Valve has no reason to drop a cease and desist, even if they did, it probably wouldn't be enforceable, what with the free use, etc.

    Not to mention fan backlash.

@deanbmmv: Valve knows about the project had only had one issue with it early in it's development. The mod was called "Black Mesa Source" and Valve asked them to drop "Source" in order to separate Valve products from the mod. Other than that, judging from past interviews, Valve seems excited to see what this team can do.

@Kicken: Yeah the left4winchester was fear of litigation from the Shaun of the dead folks. I was using it as an example where just the fear of legal threats could stall a project, not just waiting till you eventually get one.
I was mainly just suggesting fear of a cease n desist from Valve as a potential reason for it slowing down, it is possible, though Nezacant has suggested they actually have the full go ahead from Valve.
So I guess its just regular Valve time.

@Krackatoa was hit by a smooth criminal:
Actually, it is enforceable. You may not like it, but the mod tools are a service provided by Valve that Valve can take away at any time. As well, Black Mesa is in the Half Life universe, one of Valve's IPs, which they can also suspend the use of.

Will Valve? Nah, like I said, "Valve is pretty chill with the bros when it comes to mods".

    Can they? Yes.

Don't you realize the implications of this? We could have a full blown epidemic in days! (Centuries, actually, since the disease runs in Valve time as well).

@KillaB43: Can you really blame Valve for delaying it at this point though? I mean, I'd love to have seen Episode 1-3 within 3 years of each other but look at what Valve has done since Episode 2. It's not as if they've been dormant.

@-MasterDex-: It's not the delay that makes me sad, It's the complete lack of any information at all. Throw me a bone Valve. Gimme a plot line or some concept art or something. Or announce a date for an announcement. At this point I'll take anything.

Also wasn't the point of doing these in episodes instead of a full massive game to get them out a little faster?

I'd love some new info too but at this point, I'll just wait paitiently for HL:E3, there's enough coming out for now to keep me occupied.

That's awesome -- I love Black Mesa. Sure was funny when they used it in that "Still Alive" song in Portal, too. This company should work it into a jingle. "Maybe Black Mesa? That was a joke, ha ha, fat chance: DEFINITELY BLACK MESA! Come right in through our PORTAL for some delicious coffee today!" Because Portal/"Still Alive" is the only time Black Mesa was ever mentioned in video games, right?

    Ha, I kid!

But seriously: when in the name of headcrabs are we going to get HL2 Episode 3? I was going to hold my breath until we got it, but had to give up on that a long time ago. My crowbar is getting rusty.
