The Wii isn't exactly "the place" for your t3h hardkorz gaming, but it's not "ONLY" a collection of mini-games. Metroid 3 and Super Mario Galaxy are two of the best games I've played in years.
I admit my Wii collects dust for most of the year in between really good releases but at least I can admit that... and not slide into rampant fanboyism.
@HeadspaceCools: I know, I know. There are real games on the Wii. I was just trying to be funny, as alzheimers seems to have caught on to. And I think you won't deny that there are a whole lot of games for the Wii that are just collections of minigames.
Peoples beef, well mine and a few others at least, isn't the fact that Metroid 3, SMG and SSBB are bad...
It's just 'hey that could have been done on gamecube'. RE4 as proof, zelda TP s proof and the (lack of) graphics on metroid 3 and SSBB.
And I am sure with a few more hours of labor, SMG could have been a gamecube thing as well.
Fact of the matter is nintendo realizes this, and did when the games were in devolpment, but what better way to make people feel happy about their purchase of the console than releasing games that could have been put on the on the previous console, ONLY on the new one.
Metroid 3 was amazing, but so were MP1/2, SMG was fun! but its just a more better looking super mario 64/water mario. SSBB is just well...darker characters for lack of a better way to put it.
The 'old games' on wii shop, about as much shovel ware comes out as main games that people pay $50 for. Far and few inbetween do you get releases like star tropics tat are actually good. Where are the other 'good' games, where my secret of mana? Wheres my FF? Obviously CT won't be done cause you just ported it to DS for a quick $40.
nintendo has got a good group of people fooled with a illusion, had me for a while till i decided to not bite into it anymore. i still have my wii, for hopes that maybe a "Wii" game would come out
Yes, all of those titles could've been Gamecube releases within the confines of your graphical comparison, but Super Mario Galaxy thrives on the Wiimote and Nunchuck control system. Stop saying that if the graphics are the same than surely it's not a good game and could've been done years ago. Simply put: SMG could not have been done on the Gamecube. It was born on the Wii, and would not work on any other console. Period.
The only thing I can think of which annoys me this year beyond the perpetual dearth of 2-D games and such is how in this day and age companies still feel the need to put region restrictions, especially on downloadable content. I'm looking at you, XBLA's Japanese shooter offerings, which I'd love to play, but an arbitrary firewall prevents me lest I purchase a separate console just to bypass that regional lockout.
I don't see the point in whining about easy, casual friendly games, as the industry has been sliding down that slope since Mario 64 ushered in an era of collect-a-thon gaming in lieu of intelligent puzzles and challenging gameplay.
Why the hell is "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare" still full price? It's been well over a year since it was released, AND there's a goddamn sequel that's been out for a while now. CUT THE PRICE ALREADY!
What's their grief with Saint's Row 2? The game was quite good -- it's earned over an 80% average review. Throwing it in there with Spyro and Destroy All Humans doesn't really make sense.
surprised they didn't list "Spore" under "Disappointments." gotta agree with "Infinite Undiscovery" as worst title.
my big complaint this year was the sheer deluge of games in October and November. beating a dead horse on Kotaku, i know, but the grievance still stands.
I'd complain about the amount of crappy games, but with access to a Playstation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii, I have more than enough good games with which to tide myself over. That's even with me not having touched the Nintendo Wii for months upon months.
@Coltage: Who has touched their wii for anything but virtual console in months? Not I. Just some mario 3 and mega man 9 to relearn myself that gaming was once a pasttime that built up patience and problem solving and was devoid of these sissy "save files"
@ScruffytheJanitor: i've actually been playing some Geometry Wars again. i can't get enough of all the arenas. the graphics compared to Geo Wars 2 on XBLA, though, make me want to cry.
Mine would have to be the meteoric rise of the evil empire now known as Activision, while original titles from the title's predecessor, EA, fail to move copies.
@Hendrixx: I agree EA had a couple of ture original IP's this year but they just didnt move very well. Its too bad Dead Space and Mirror's Edge are very good games.
@qwijybo: It moved a good amount of units, just not good enough for EA. Add in the gigantic marketing cost for both titles and they technically became flops.
It would have been nice if EA didn't expect the world of both of those titles, but they did. They also didn't need the ridiculous marketing effort (Parkour=underground, why advertise mainstream?)
