I'm really upset that it's taken this long for someone to comment on this (and that it will more than likely go unread), but seriously... where are the sex jokes that should be rampant as hinted at in this article?
What with the "Premature Evacuation" in the text and the Cocksplosion going on in the picture (come on, you all saw it - in the center, towards the right, looks a bit like a fire snowman with big balls....), I would've thought this article would be ripe for the plucking.
Kotakuites, you disappoint me with your wholesomeness. For shame. :'(
In any case, nice to-the-point article, Luke. Glad to see Treasure getting some love (especially for cheap).
It's good to know that Luke didn't finish early, leaving the last boss feeling unsatisfied.
On another topic:
Who else rocks the homing laser that chases everything and makes little blue boxes on them till they're dead? You can clear a whole screen with that and not even have to aim. I think it's the blue thingy & the fire. Mixing powerups is soooo fun.
Oh, and one more update - I've had people say the PS3's online is kinda busted. Can anyone who's played the PS3 version confirm this? My review was on the 360 version, and it was fine.
@Anarchist_Gamer: It's not true. You can throw your partner just as you can any enemy, but there's no huge damaging attack or glitch to exploit doing that.
If you're looking to beat Expert difficulty level, you'll need the laser + flame saber weapon. I believe I've read people doing it with flame + flame, but that's too difficult to control for me.
If you just want to beat the game, set it to Easy, select the Blue Gunstar, and assemble the laser + chaser weapon as soon as you can. You should be able to run through the game fairly easier, adjusting for when the laser locks onto an unwanted target. Note the
"secret" moves can help as well. Hold attack and jump simultaneously to block attacks, and you can do a back/down/forward + attack invincible charge move which makes short work of the boxes on the fifth stage and is effective against some bosses as well.
There's huge damage if you throw your partner and he kicks in the air. Hell, you don't even need to throw your partner. My brother and I played through this on the Wii a couple years ago and we both just jumped kicked through each boss (except for the mine cart stage), made it so much easier....
@sugardeath: You can jump kick any boss. It's a normal, documented attack, and throwing a second player has nothing to do with it. The physical attacks are strong, but they're close range and you put yourself in harm's way doing them even all the hits they dish out. It works fine on the easier difficulties, but you'll die on the harder settings trying that.
I mean I enjoyed Hardcorps more, but Gunstar Heroes has more style. I hate that level in the spaceship though. Those are the worst controls ever in a 2D shooter type game.
@n00b_pwner: You're supposed to play it as you would any other shooter. Fix the gun to the right and shoot shoot shoot. The level's so easy, too, that I can't see anyone dying on it. Even Seven Force is easy to dodge with the ship's dash move.
@Mister_CrazyGuy: I remember that fight. Where you have to beat all seven forms one after the other. Let's see, dog, crab, bird-thing, star, gun, running robot and ... er.... Damn, can't pull the last one. They are all pretty easy though; it's kind of sad but I can still remember all their patterns even now. Although for that second fight I remember the gun-form firing much faster.
Only four missions? Did they cut out the long fifth level after you get all four crystals, then the space shooting part, and the tough-as-nails part fighting through the enemies spaceship?
@Kobun: There's a serious credibility issue at stake with such an error, too.
The customisable weaponry and co-op adds a bit of replay value to the game, but with only four missions, you'll be done just as you were getting into the swing of things.
Played Xbox 360 version to completion, tested online co-op.
If the reviewer states that he played the game through completion yet details of the review point otherwise, then how can any of us take what's said in a review or the Kotaku closing at face value?
@mat1cs is a gentleman and a scholar: Nah. :p It could be something as minor as a brainfart when typing the number, but it really should be addressed whatever the reason may be for the oversight.

The GBA game Gunstar Super Heroes is actually an entirely different game, not a different version of the original.

It's really similar to mischief makers on the N64. It's like a contra/metal slug hybrid.
