@SaanZ: I remember reading about a much-publicised adultery trial involving an actress. *off to Google it*
Found it: [news.bbc.co.uk] An interesting read. Apparently, the courts nowadays "only" give adulterers suspended sentences, but the law is still in full effect: 1,000 cases a year.
I love the conclusion of the article: "According to a survey carried out last year, nearly 68% of South Korean men and 12% of women confess to having sex outside marriage." Prisons would be crowded...
Basically, it's like the ID registration that is required in a lot of Korean MMO(Prior to this all), but they took it a step further: If you are a minor, it blocks everything(EXP, drops, etc) in the game after 3 hours of gameplay.
Does it help? Doubt it, but nonetheless give more reason for people who have never been out of their country to bash China.
@NekoCake: So it only blocks everything if you're a minor. That's actually very reasonable. I assumed from the headline and comments that this would be a terrible thing, but stopping children from playing too much isn't so bad.
Soldier_CLE says DON'T STOP AT THE STAR! REVOKE THE WHOLE DAMN THING, OWEN!!! was starred
Soldier_CLE says DON'T STOP AT THE STAR! REVOKE THE WHOLE DAMN THING, OWEN!!! was unstarred
@NeVeRMoRe666: Is there a more memorable way though? I mean, you COULD die a painless death, or you could be remembered as that guy who had the balls to swallow saw blades.
@PLAAND88: I'm pretty sure its just that their country sucks so bad that people could care less if they kill themselves playing games. considering this is unheard of outside of Asian country's something must be wrong with the way its run.
@TheCorporate: It's specificially because of that attitude that the rest of the world hates America. Have you ever been to China? Have you ever been muslim? Have you ever believed in Islam? Have you ever been a minority in your life? Oh TheCorporate? No then?
I wouldn't pass judgement on others till you've fully walked in your own shoes.
@NeVeRMoRe666: This is by no means condemning the US. I strongly believe that it is a great country capable of enormous, positive things. But its this attitude: "I'm pretty sure its just that their country sucks so bad." that makes me sick.
Oh fuck off with your pretentious assumptions. I'm an ethnic minority -UK- citizen who has been to both China and the Middle East, and can categorically state that I couldn't tolerate the censorship so widespread in both societies having enjoyed the freedoms that Westerners so blindly take for granted.
@TheCorporate: Nor am I a fan of censorship. I never said that it was a good thing. But for one to label another country as "stupid" ....well thats just ethnocentrism at its finest. I do agree with you that there is a lot of problems with the government both in Asia and in the Middle East (obviously), but for one to pass simple judgement on an entire country, thats just wrong. Your way, the "western" way isn't always right. We've seen it again and again in Iraq and in Afghanistan. We've seen how western imposed values have hindered the development of countries in Africa and elsewhere in the global south. But thats all beside my initial point, which was simply the fact that we should examine our own issues before we critize others. And if we do criticize, must we really resort to silly name calling?
I think there is some misunderstanding between us and I may have made the silly presumption that you were something that you were not, but I think, considering how things have gone in the last 10-20 years, my point still has a lot of validity.
A problem completely overblown by the media, and what's the solution? Force the developers to implement anti addiction software, and take away player anonymity.
This is exactly how I expected the People's Republic to respond to this problem.
@Thorax: I'm not sure their name will be publicly available, will it? I half expected them to just be forced to hand over player names if subpoenaed. Or to be constantly "watched" while signing on.
In feel sorry for Chinese gamers. I really like my GamerTag, it means something to me, it's personal, I'm sure tons of people have my name though, so it just takes away the personal-ness.
I wouldn't be too quick to condemn them. While we were playing Call of Duty 4 and watching teenage pop stars have break downs, the government went ahead and started tapping phones and arresting people without warrants or evidence in the name of "patriotism."
@BankaiNejiX: i found it funny president bush reprimanded the chinese gov on human rights. its like Abu Ghraib or Guantánamo Bay didn't exist or something.
On-topic: its the china daily komrades. the gov prob created 4 online companies just to shut them down again to prove something.
That's an uninformed statement right there. As far as the US pushed things under Bush things they never even approached the levels of China, Isreal or other truly inhuman countries. Despite being one of the worst presidents in history (you can only count on one hand the number that might have been worse than him) he never approached the violations of basic rights "progressive" China's commited in the part year even.
@Abe_lincoln: saanz suggested that. i said i found it funny that bush bad mouthed china's human rights record when he has his own growing record. my post was only one comment above his: check it out.
@Sutekh_Slain: I find it very amusing that you see no difference between a doughnut and a car. Of course someone who stole a doughnut can tell off someone who stole a car, there is a huge difference in value there.
@I-Al2x-I: No, if it means controlling aspects of peoples lives forcefully to try to force your own ideals on them and what you think is best, it's not positive.
@moemoemoe: One, unless you actually know what the anti-addiction system is, you don't really have much ground to stand on when claiming it's "controlling aspects of peoples lives forcefully" (unless you're an out-and-out anarchist).
Two, to immediately compare a video game playing restriction to Nazi Germany or fascist Italy downplays Nazism and fascism to an insane degree. No, this is not how those started, not at all. Read up on history before making such offensive and ignorant statements.
@I-Al2x-I: And how is it stopping people from swallowing saw blades? The man clearly had other issues then video games and the government is using it as an excuse to exert more control over people's lives.
Now the government can tell people how long they can play and what they can do, how is this a good thing? I can not think of a single instance in history when more government control was a good thing. And don't tell me that this time it's diffrent, because it's not.
Those that don't study history are doomed to repeat it.
@EmTeeZ: I think it was more that moemoemoe was saying that when you give your government control over basic freedoms, it is only a matter of time before you do become part of a fascist state. And I agree . . . if people are willing to give their government control over stupid things like this and fail to govern themselves, it is only a matter of time.
"He who would trade liberty for some temporary security, deserves neither liberty nor security." - Benjamin Franklin
@LCOS: Times when more government control was a good thing- During the insurance crash due to a independent free market, and then, again, when the Housing and banking markets crashed due to deregulation.
@Ad-hominem: They are economics and they definitely need to be taken care of (to some extent). Besides, they have no limiting effect on people unlike anti-addiction system.
Besides, anyone lumping the British Monarchy together with Soviet Russia AND invoking Nazis in a video game blog is either trolling, suffering from a lack of education, or Bill O'Reilly.
Disclaimer: Yes, I am Christian. No, I don't ask you to accept me or my beliefs, get over your stereotypes.
You know, I used to play this game with my brother that he'd find one of his favorite bands, and I'd find an identical sounding equivalent one that identifies itself as Christian.
The problem with this particular game is that it's sliding too far away from the emulation of the product and is focusing more on mainstream CONTEMPORARY Christian music as opposed to actual Christian Rock music. It's the same problem that the Dance Praise game has, in that it uses Contemporary Music instead of actual Dance Music (Hillsong London's 'Jesus Is:Remix' is a perfect example of something they could've used but didn't).
When you're catering to an audience, they are going for names that are known versus songs that are good. In a sense, this is like an exact opposite of what Harmonix has been doing with introducing unknowns with good music.
Compound that with the stigmata that this is a cash-in (which with how it was built...aka half-assed...not hard to believe), and you've got yourself the mockery you see here. The fact of the matter is, if this were even a Guitar Hero clone with regular secular music, it would be a ripoff due to the production value being simply a Frets on Fire skin and nothing more.
It's embarassing, really. You can't expect anyone, Christian or non, to take this seriously, and even if the game was remotely fun, they failed at enticing anyone but the remedial class IMHO.
