It is necessary to download a file to update (read:replace) the DLC from GH4 to get it to work in 5 (a service they provide for free), so it makes sense that the new version files won't work in the older program, it can't read them. To continue to support GH4 they would need to distribute 2 versions of every file.
Hopefully they've got a robust enough file system to take it into the next season's games and not require another update.

This comment thread is hysterical. Everyone's bitching about big evil Activision. Okay, look: If you're not getting GH5, you don't give a shit that the new DLC won't work in WT. If you care that much about GH DLC, you're getting GH5 anyway.
Wow, they're going to charge? Mother fuckers, they're not like Harmonix who didn't charge for the ability to bring the RB1 DLC up to RB2...oh, wait.
Only 152 of 158? God damn it, but I want all my music, like in RB where I didn't lose any of the tracks I...oh wait.
Seriously? I don't condone most shit Kotick says, I probably enjoy RB more than GH, and fuck I don't even care if the general population need to paint Activision as the new Evil Empire of gaming, but really, the bitching is not only childish, it's just plain retarded in most cases.
You think this is bad...just wait until GH6 and BH2 come out (along with GHWT2). Because you think Activision has it backwards now, you're going to have to pay that "licensing fee" all over again to drag GH5, BH, and Van Halen into the future.
A-ha, a-ha, I knew I picked the right side of this war by picking Rock Band.
Fuck Guitar Hero. Really. If not for name recognition, if the games were really judged on their quality and how friendly they are to the consumer, Rock Band wins in a landslide.
pretty lame if you ask me. new features are great and all, but i would much rather have the easy-pessy Rock Band Store that lets you download music that'll work on any rockband game, you know, because the music is why we're all here playing these games. not for "star power" or "fancy pancy" mode.
when Abbey Road DLC hits the RB store, everyone will swoon that any RB owner can can play those tracks, you wont need to own Beatles Edition. Then we will question what Activation is doing and wondering when they'll get the hint.
Actually, the Beatles tracks are tied to Rock Band Beatles, presumably for a combination of licensing deals and vocal harmonies. Kind of a pity really, but I'll make do.
@Toothball: beatles i'm fine for, seeing how it's getting the royal treatment unlike van halen who's now sloppy seconds with 5. i can imagine a similar bundle for 6. get wt/5/bh and the incredible new crowd surfing feature with the tony hawk skateboard peripheral.
@Noodle-Works: Due to the licensing agreement needed to secure the Beatles music, HMX isn't able to allow any of the songs (including the DLC) into the rest of the Rock Band series.
This doesn't mean at a later date the game can't be patched to play nice with everything. But for now it's a standalone game (albeit one with DLC support...take note Activision)
Is this the same as Rock Band? Can you use the Rock Band DLC if you only have the first one? I don't see why you wouldn't be able to, but you never know.
I don't see myself buying another Guitar Hero anytime soon. MAYBE just the game if the price drops at some point.
@fauxbravo:
Any Rock Band DLC you download is compatible with both Rock Band 1 and 2, even if you download it through the Rock Band 2 music store. It's going to be that way for every Rock Band game made from now on, too. They said that every piece of DLC from here on out will work with every other Rock Band title ever made in the future. Pretty nice, having access to all that DLC if you only ever wanted to buy the first one.
@Gyaruson: I just wanted to clarify for him in case the other guy missed it, but RB: Beatles is the only game that's NOT compatible. It has its own set of DLC that will not playing on RB1 or 2, nor will any DLC from those games be playable on Beatles.
@BryanH:
True. Since The Beatles is a standalone title that features distinct music not a part of the Rock Band universe, it will have separate DLC and not be compatible with other versions DLC. But would you really wanna watch the Beatles perform Queen Bitch by David Bowie?
this is news? GH DLC tracks have not been compatible between them since ever, activision plan was to always milk the consumer each time they were to release a new game, RB made them to rethink their business strategy, but seems they didn't think hard enough.
I don't care that much because DLC is forward compatible and some time next year i will be buying this game, however it is kind of a weak sauce that there's no way to buy new DLC for the old game when they could simply make the new features not compatible while still making it possible to play them on the old game, not that the horrible list of world tour encourages to have many songs in it.
Also i would like to know if there's gonna be a way to buy the license for downloading the worldtour disc songs from the PSN store, since neither the Rockband nor the Guitar Hero in-game stores work on mexican accounts.
@Falsoman: For some reason i can no longer promote pink comments, so i'll say it here. CorbinGwar is right.
Activision said that transfering the DLC was going to be free. The "nominal" -yet to be disclosed- fee is only for the on disc songs from World Tour and Smash Hits.
And hopefully the DLC tracks that won't work aren't the Hendrix ones. I haven't bought them, but i want them IF they are gonna be forward compatible!
Wouldn't this DISCOURAGE sales from the longtime fans who bought hundreds of songs from World Tour and previous games? Who in their right mind would buy a game that isn't compatible with all the tracks they bought for their previous game? (considering they bought several dozen if not hundreds)
So they can't take the effort to gimp the DLC for WT?
I'm no businessman, so feel free to jump down my throat if I'm wrong, but wouldn't gimped DLC for WT not only increase DLC sales, but inspire more people to buy GH5 to get the most out of their DLC? Because as it is now, I for one would rather wait for Harmonix to license the tracks.
(Again, I have no clue whether I'm blowing smoke or not. I know nothing about business sense. This is just how it seems to my layman mind.)
@ShaggE wants to join the Egg Council.: It would depend on how big the changes to the engine are, I would guess. It is possible that what they've done to the vocals, drums, and star power would change things so much that it would be unplayable in World Tour...but I doubt that.
Also, it's applicable only to 152 of the 158 songs in the World Tour and Smash Hits catalog, and no one knows which songs are the blacklisted six.
They really need to announce this before I consider getting the game. Right now, I'm not sold on GH5; the tracklist isn't that great and I'd say that at least half of the songs I was most interested in have been released (Gorillaz, Tom Petty) or will be released (Queen, Nirvana) as Rock Band DLC. The import isn't necessarily make or break, but it will factor into whether or not I go for the game or just stick with Rock BAnd.
@TitillatedOcelot: We get ridiculous Guitar Hero milking several times a year for the past several years to the point of the franchise almost being shovelware and THIS reeks of cash in? The whole Guitar Hero name has been a huge cash in after GHII, my friend.
@RockyRan: Agreed. It wasn't as blatantly obvious to me though, as I only started play GH when 3 came out.
When you get down to the brass tacks, Rock Band may not be releasing games as often but I certainly dump enough of my cash into their wallets on DLC. So either way, if I get screwed, it's consensual.
@D Mitsuki, Gotta have guts kid!: "How about we make all the previous guitars and drumsets incompatible for Guitar Hero 5, forcing them to buy new guitars and drumsets for that same unnecessary new game?"
@puresewas1de: "And instead of actually giving them a preset song list, just make the game somewhat like a licensee, so they just can buy DLC with it!"
I'm guessing it will be damn near impossible to actually read the note chart when there's four lined up like that.
Also, who the hell has room for 4 drum kits. Let alone 4 drum kits to need room for?

"Updated" WT tracks still work in the older game.
