Guitar Hero's World Tour Plays Final Show for PC, Mac Fans

It's company policy at Activision to exploit franchises. And you can't very well exploit Guitar Hero: World Tour if it's not on PC, can you? So Activision are bringing the game to PC (and Mac!). More »

Guitar Hero World Tour Not Selling Like Guitar Hero III Did

When Guitar Hero III was released in 2007, it sold 1.39 million copies across the various platforms in its first week on sale. That generated $115 million for Activision. When Guitar Hero World Tour launched in 2008, it sold 534,000 copies in its first seven days. That "only" generated $67 million. That's got to be disappointing for Activision. Sure, you can point to the fact the complete GHWT package is prohibitively expensive in these troubled economic times, but you didn't need to buy the whole pack. Indeed, so many people own a previous Guitar Hero a lot of people could just buy the disc. So what gives? Who knows. Rock Band's probably got a lot to do with it, but I'd never overlook the fact that more casual gamers - and a lot of Guitar Hero owners are just that - don't stomach annual updates as easily as us suckers do. AT&T Just Giving Away Copies Of Guitar Hero: World Tour

Know, before we go on, that this will apply to very few of you. OK? Great, let's go on. If you live in the US, and live in the US in an area that's serviced by either AT&T's high-speed internet or U-Verse TV, and don't yet have either of those services, but are willing to sign up, then boy, have they got a deal for you. If you fit that bill and sign up (and don't mind "qualifiers" like a mail-in rebate), you'll get yourself a free copy of Guitar Hero: World Tour. Not the whole kit and kaboodle, mind you, just the game and guitar, but hey, if you were in the market for a new ISP, there are worse sweeteners out there. More »

As Expected, Copyrighted Songs Are Disappearing From Guitar Hero: World Tour

Don't say we didn't warn you. Despite, well, warnings that they just wouldn't stand for anybody creating then sharing real songs over Guitar Hero: World Tour's song creation utility, people went ahead and did it anyway. During the game's first week on sale, the GH Tunes "store" was littered with recreations of game tunes like the theme to Mario. And the theme to Zelda. You get the idea. Well, those are now gone. And the others that are still there - like tunes from Final Fantasy and Sonic - probably won't be there much longer, either. Our advice? Get creative with those song titles. "Sonic Theme" is no good. But "Baby Stole My Heart And Stashed It In Green Hill Zone"? More subtle. Might get in under the radar. More »

Guitar Hero World Tour Review: This is Guitar Hero

Let’s face it, you can’t compete against Rock Band with just guitars. You can decide to go your own route and own the Guitar-only rhythm game genre, but that seems like a formula to lose money and no one is in this business to do that. So Guitar Hero IV, aka Guitar Hero World Tour, had to come up with a band of its own. And the developers did it in spades rolling out a six-piece drum kit with two raised cymbals, a snare, and two toms, all of which are velocity-sensitive. Neversoft also made the guitar bigger, more realistic looking and added a fretless slider panel. And the innovation didn’t stop with the instruments; gameplay got a major overhaul too. More »

Heidi Klum Strips Down To Shill Guitar Hero: World Tour

Anyone watching last night's Monday Night Football likely caught a glimpse of Heidi Klum's underthings as she jiggled for Guitar Hero: World Tour. (I was lucky enough to catch this one with my mother, in town for a brief visit.) Activision's going for the zipper in the newest Guitar Hero spot, one that swaps out Kobe Bryant, Michael Phelps, Alex Rodriguez and Tony Hawk for a solo Klum. We'll withhold judgment on just how successful it is until we get a good look at the page views on this one.

Guitar Hero: World Tour KFC Fully Loaded Box Meal Unboxing, Impressions

When word broke that the KFC-Activision partnership had resulted in more than just Guitar Hero World Tour in-game advertising, with a Guitar Hero branded "Fully Loaded Box Meal" hitting the fast food chain, we decided to strap on the feedbag and test it out for ourselves. The meal consists of seven levels: a "KFC snacker" sandwich, two chicken strips, a drumstick or thigh, a biscuit, two sides and a 32 ounce soft drink. It should give you serious pause at about 1200 calories, as advertised, not including the high fructose corn syrup laden soda of your choice. More »

GH: World Tour Won't Let You Share Real Songs

When it comes to breaking down the feature sets of Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero: World Tour, Activision's title has long had an extra tick in the "for" column: its song creation utility. And not because you honestly think you can recreate your favourite songs in the included editor, but because, with the game allowing the online sharing of created songs, you're relying on someone more talented to do it for you. Well, turns out you won't be doing anything of the sort. Activision have told 1UP "If there's a licensed song and someone holds the copyright to it, we'll take it down regardless of whether or not someone complains". So if you want that note-perfect cover of Honey Bucket, you're going to have to roll your sleeves up and do it yourself. More »

Neversoft on Guitar Hero: World Tour

While it’s exciting to document the inner workings of gaming genius or uncover some deep-seated scandal, most game game developer interviews feature a PR handler whose job it is to keep said developer from saying anything too cool/secret/incriminating. Thus, most interviews – especially ones that take place after a game is announced but not detailed – devolve into nebulous awkward silences. No matter what you ask, they give you some canned answer that doesn’t tell you anything and you’re stuck asking stock questions from the getting-to-know list your second grade teacher made you fill out. Stop asking, Tool fans. Actually, stop endlessly whining, because you've got your wish: Tool will be appearing in Guitar Hero: World Tour. Not literally appearing, mind you, as they won't be in-game characters, but they will have an in-game arena, which they co-designed and which will highlight "the art style that has become a staple in their music videos, live shows and album artwork". Wayne Kramer, Sex Pistols, And Motorhead Re-Record For GH: World Tour

The only thing better than original master recordings in a rhythm game is having the original artists go back and do the whole thing over again, and Guitar Hero: World Tour is boasting three separate re-recordings on its set list when the game hits store shelves. In addition to The Sex Pistols' "Pretty Vacant" and Motorhead's "Overkill", MC5 guitarist Wayne Kramer has recruited a little help and hit the studio to re-record the classic "Kick Out the Jams". The new recording uses the original vocals from singer Rob Tyner from 1968, with Kramer, Alice in Chains (the press release says Alice "and" Chains) guitarist Jerry Cantrell and former Guns 'N' Roses guitarist Gilby Clarke. New Smashing Pumpkins In GH: World Tour DLC

It's another band rhythm video game first as Activision announces that Smashing Pumpkins will debut their new single "G.L.O.W." as part of a track pack for Guitar Hero: World Tour before the song is released to the general public. The song, which I highly doubt has anything to do with the Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling, will be part of a Smashing Pumpkins track pack, rounded out by "1979" and "The Everlasting Gaze". That makes four Smashing Pumpkins songs for Guitar Hero: World Tour, with "Today" shipping on the disc. More »

Brian Bright On Guitar Hero: World Tour - We're Bringing It

Before my hands-on time with Guitar Hero: World Tour the other day, I got a chance to sit down and share a beer with Neversoft's project director for the title, Brian Bright, a rather personable fellow who knows the entire history of the band Sisters of Mercy, which makes him okay in my book. Since we were sitting there discussing music anyway, I figured I'd ask him if he was worried at all about the competition. Well, first I asked him if he was concerned about Konami's Rock Revolution, which he said he'd never seen, neatly summing up exactly how much competition they're bringing to the genre. More »

Beer Goes Well With Guitar Hero: World Tour

Activision has beer, and they're not afraid to use it. By the time I showed up for my hands on with Activision's Guitar Hero: World Tour yesterday afternoon I had already accidentally downed one beer, having mistaken a bottle with a grapefruit on front of it as fruit juice, instead of the grapefruit-flavored beer that was actually hiding within the bottle. Sneaky beer. Then another was shared with Neversoft's project director Brian Bright upon arriving at Activision's booth for my appointment, which disappeared mysteriously without me remembering having imbibed it. Having an unnaturally low tolerance to alcohol for a man my size I was relatively tipsy by the time I got in to actually play the game, which should explain why I agreed to sing "Spiderwebs" by No Doubt. I'm told that, unlike the American contestants, Godoj here actually has musical talent. I would have come to our country's defense but come on - Taylor Hicks? Really? Ozzy Returns To Guitar Hero, Brings Zakk Wylde With Him

Activision are intent on luring as many "big name" rock stars to the Guitar Hero brand as possible. Ozzy Osbourne, failing mind aside, is a big name rock star, and a Guitar Hero veteran to boot, providing perhaps the series' finest moment with Bark At The Moon. So it should be little surprise to hear that the ex-Sabbath frontman has been signed to appear in the upcoming Guitar Hero: World Tour, alongside long-time guitarist Zakk Wylde, where they'll be playing Crazy Train and Mr. Crowley in a recreation of an Ozzfest venue. GH: World Tour Open to Rock Band Instruments

At last night's Activision non-E3 press conference, it was quickly mentioned that Guitar Hero: World Tour being compatible with non-Guitar Hero instruments. Meaning? The Xbox 360 version of Guitar Hero: World Tour are compatible with instruments from the first Rock Band. (Obviously, the developers haven't been able to incorporate the unreleased Rock Band 2 instruments into the game.)
