Guitar Hero World Tour Not Selling Like Guitar Hero III Did

When Guitar Hero III was released in 2007, it sold 1.39 million copies across the various platforms in its first week on sale. That generated $115 million for Activision. When Guitar Hero World Tour launched in 2008, it sold 534,000 copies in its first seven days. That "only" generated $67 million. That's got to be disappointing for Activision. Sure, you can point to the fact the complete GHWT package is prohibitively expensive in these troubled economic times, but you didn't need to buy the whole pack. Indeed, so many people own a previous Guitar Hero a lot of people could just buy the disc. So what gives? Who knows. Rock Band's probably got a lot to do with it, but I'd never overlook the fact that more casual gamers - and a lot of Guitar Hero owners are just that - don't stomach annual updates as easily as us suckers do.

AT&T Just Giving Away Copies Of Guitar Hero: World Tour

Know, before we go on, that this will apply to very few of you. OK? Great, let's go on. If you live in the US, and live in the US in an area that's serviced by either AT&T's high-speed internet or U-Verse TV, and don't yet have either of those services, but are willing to sign up, then boy, have they got a deal for you. If you fit that bill and sign up (and don't mind "qualifiers" like a mail-in rebate), you'll get yourself a free copy of Guitar Hero: World Tour. Not the whole kit and kaboodle, mind you, just the game and guitar, but hey, if you were in the market for a new ISP, there are worse sweeteners out there.

As Expected, Copyrighted Songs Are Disappearing From Guitar Hero: World Tour

Don't say we didn't warn you. Despite, well, warnings that they just wouldn't stand for anybody creating then sharing real songs over Guitar Hero: World Tour's song creation utility, people went ahead and did it anyway. During the game's first week on sale, the GH Tunes "store" was littered with recreations of game tunes like the theme to Mario. And the theme to Zelda. You get the idea. Well, those are now gone. And the others that are still there - like tunes from Final Fantasy and Sonic - probably won't be there much longer, either. Our advice? Get creative with those song titles. "Sonic Theme" is no good. But "Baby Stole My Heart And Stashed It In Green Hill Zone"? More subtle. Might get in under the radar.

Guitar Hero World Tour Review: This is Guitar Hero

Let’s face it, you can’t compete against Rock Band with just guitars. You can decide to go your own route and own the Guitar-only rhythm game genre, but that seems like a formula to lose money and no one is in this business to do that. So Guitar Hero IV, aka Guitar Hero World Tour, had to come up with a band of its own. And the developers did it in spades rolling out a six-piece drum kit with two raised cymbals, a snare, and two toms, all of which are velocity-sensitive. Neversoft also made the guitar bigger, more realistic looking and added a fretless slider panel. And the innovation didn’t stop with the instruments; gameplay got a major overhaul too.

Do the masters-only massive setlist, new instruments and gameplay give Guitar Hero World Tour the competitive edge in the band music genre or is the game destined to spend its remaining days treading water in a sea of retarded sexuality and bad poetry? More »

Heidi Klum Strips Down To Shill Guitar Hero: World Tour

Anyone watching last night's Monday Night Football likely caught a glimpse of Heidi Klum's underthings as she jiggled for Guitar Hero: World Tour. (I was lucky enough to catch this one with my mother, in town for a brief visit.) Activision's going for the zipper in the newest Guitar Hero spot, one that swaps out Kobe Bryant, Michael Phelps, Alex Rodriguez and Tony Hawk for a solo Klum. We'll withhold judgment on just how successful it is until we get a good look at the page views on this one.

Guitar Hero: World Tour KFC Fully Loaded Box Meal Unboxing, Impressions

When word broke that the KFC-Activision partnership had resulted in more than just Guitar Hero World Tour in-game advertising, with a Guitar Hero branded "Fully Loaded Box Meal" hitting the fast food chain, we decided to strap on the feedbag and test it out for ourselves. The meal consists of seven levels: a "KFC snacker" sandwich, two chicken strips, a drumstick or thigh, a biscuit, two sides and a 32 ounce soft drink. It should give you serious pause at about 1200 calories, as advertised, not including the high fructose corn syrup laden soda of your choice.

We'll walk you through the meal after the jump. More »

Use Of Rock Band Instruments With Guitar Hero "Expressly Prohibited"

Activision made kind of a big deal at E3 about Guitar Hero/Rock Band cross-compatibility. Said that, yes, you'd be able to use Rock Band instruments in Guitar Hero World Tour. But don't for a second think they're happy about it. Check out the fine print on the back of the Guitar Hero: World Tour box.

Activision authorizes use of this Guitar Hero Game only in combination with Guitar Hero controllers provided by Activision or standard gamepad controllers provided with the game console or other Activision licensed controllers. Any other use is expressly prohibited. No other license, express or implied, is granted.

Not just prohibited, expressly prohibited. Course, they can't actually prohibit you from doing squat, but just in case, if you're ever on the phone with Activision customer support, and they ask if you were using Rock Band instruments, you say "no".

Guitar Hero: World Tour Launch Event Celebrigasm

Guitar Hero: World Tour was welcomed into the world this weekend in a flurry – possibly even a plethora, I'll have to double check – of publicity, flashbulbs and PR budget splurging.

The Smashing Pumpkins either celebrated the launch or sullenly grumped their way through it, depending on who you believe.

Meanwhile, across America (well, in 3 cities) celebrity gamers descended on Gamestop stores to.. be celebrities. They performed well. More »

Guitar Hero: World Tour Bags Deluxe $240 Version

Guitar Hero co-publisher RedOctane is looking to squeeze a few more Ulysses S. Grants out of gamers, providing fans of the rhythm genre with a more expensive, but of questionable value, edition of Guitar Hero: World Tour. For $239.99, exactly $50 more than the standard retail price, you get... a t-shirt, two recharge kits, a gig bag and a keychain? Surely, that can't be everything.

It might be, as GameSpot requests didn't bear informative fruit from RedOctane reps. You may just be buying the prestige of spending more money on trinkets you'll likely rarely (or never) use. But hey, what's a fifty between friends and the multi-billion dollar corporations who make our plastic junk?
