Sure, the console has had some stronger sales in the last month or so, but traditionally, Microsoft has faced an uphill battle in The Land of the Rising Sun. Guilty Gear creator Daisuke Ishiwatari, who I interviewed for the arcade book, explains to game site Siliconera why Arc System Works developed Guilty Gear 2: Overture with the Xbox 360 in mind:

It was easier for a small-and-mid-sized developer like us to develop a game for Xbox 360 than PS3. Also, since the main feature of the game is the network battle, XBOX 360 with organized network infrastructure was considered more suitable for the game.

This GG2 was the first title that we took the overseas development into consideration and since Xbox 360 had been widely used especially in the U.S., we wanted to challenge the system.

Keep in mind that developers are saying programming for the PS3 is getting easier as their know-how increases.

<![CDATA[Aksys Delivers Guilty Gear 2: Overture Stateside]]> Aksys is pleased to announce that they will be bringing Guilty Gear 2: Overture to to the U.S. Xbox 360 this fall. When the original Guilty Gear was released back in 1998 for the PlayStation, Arc System Works made me rethink what a 2D fighter could be. Blazing fast action, unique characters, and graphics of a quality I'd never seen before in the genre. Now it's a 3D tactical action game. Yay.

"Guilty Gear 2: Overture retains a lot of elements that the fighting games are known for, so it's cool to see how familiar moves like the Gun Flame make the transition to 3D," said Michael Manzanares, Project Lead, Aksys Games. " Except now though, you're facing off against an entire army instead of just one character. You'll lose (badly) if you think you're a one-man army, so you definitely have to remember that you have your own army to command."
Having played the Japanese demo of the game, all I can do is shake my head and wonder why. Going to 3D I can understand. Completely changing genres? It boggles the mind.
GUILTY GEAR 2: OVERTURE ON XBOX 360 IN FALL OF 2008

The 2D fighting game phenomenon is now an intense tactical action game!

Torrance, CA (March 11, 2008) Aksys Games, a publisher of interactive entertainment products, announced today that Guilty Gear 2: Overture will arrive exclusively on Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft in Q3 2008. This Xbox 360 exclusive will take the frantic one-on-one fighting game series in an exciting new direction as an intense tactical action game.

Guilty Gear 2: Overture Prologue
In the far future, humanity succeeded in developing an endless energy called the divine power. But although they were able to obtain wisdom, mankind could not cast aside their foolishness. Tension among the major powers led to the creation of biological weapons that were based on that power - Gears.

Justice, the only Gear able to command the legions of biological weapons, went berserk and declared war on all of humanity. That was the beginning of the worst war in history - The Crusades.

In response, mankind formed an order of elite knights, and with their participation, Justice was defeated. With her fall, all Gears ceased to function and entered a dormant state. The long-lasted Crusades came to an end, and it seemed like mankind restored peace.

However, true history has yet to reveal itself

<![CDATA[Guilty Gear 2 Demo Rocks Japan]]> When Guilty Gear was first released, I considered it one of the best 2D fighters I had ever played. Over the past 10 years the game has been using the Capcom method of creating sequels, adding new features and characters to the old game across various systems. When Guilty Gear 2: Overture was first announced for the Xbox 360 I was ecstatic. When I discovered it was going to be a 3D game, my excitement dropped a little bit. Then I found out it was an action-adventure game and my heart completely deflated. Larry Hryb brings word now that a Japan-only demo is out for the title, scheduled for release in that country at the end of the month, so we'll soon have a much better idea if the double jump of genre and dimension was a good idea. Of course, there are ways of getting the demo in the US, and an Xbox 360 near me might be downloading a 717MB demo as we speak, but that's all hearsay.

<![CDATA[Guilty Gear 2: Overture Slash-On Impressions]]> While Guilty Gear 2 is supposed to feature a mix of a 3D hack-n-slash and RTS elements, the demo only let us tear through a level of the cutting and killing variety. It is a combo-based H&S, though I'm not sure I plumbed its deepest depths or anything since it seemed fairly simplistic—in fact, I hope I've only skimmed the top because I'd expect a combo system with more complexity from Arc. That said, it was a lot of fun tearing through waves of fairly hapless drones with Sol's signature moves.

The thrill certainly doesn't come from how gorgeous the game looks. The graphics are adequate, but nothing special, which is disappointing considering the historical eye candy quality of GG visuals.

While I enjoyed the demo, I still walked away with the sort-of feeling I played a regular hack-n-slash with a Guilty Gear skin on top of it, ultimately leading me wonder how much of the enthrallment stemmed from the GG branding. The H&S mechanics are solid, but not mindblowing or genre-busting. In other words, it's really cool to kill things as Sol. But the Sol factor's a big part of that equation, at least for me.

<![CDATA[Guilty Gear 2 Vaguely Dated]]> After endless Guilty Gear Xs and Guilty Gear XXs, this winter will see the actual sequel to the original Guilty Gear game. It's even for the Xbox 360! As we previously posted, the game can be described as an RTS-meets-action-game-mixed-with-hair-metal in 3D. Dubbed Guilty Gear 2: Overture, players are out to destroy enemy base "Master Ghost." Gone are traditional 2D arcade style brawling and in is 3D "melee action" against multiple bad guys. And that sounds like Dynasty Warrior-type in-the-field endless chain-type combat. The game is due out this winter in Japan.

Note: Those who are heading to Comic Market 72 on the 18th at Tokyo Big Sight, be sure to check out the Overture goods Arc System Works has on display. There'll be t-shirts, mouse pads and mug cups.

<![CDATA[Guilty Gear 2 Goes 3D, Real-Time Strategy, Crazy]]> Fans of the Guilty Gear series may be used to the rough ride Arc Systemworks asks of them, what with the confusing sequel/spin-off numbering scheme and that whole Bridget gender confusion issue. But word from the new issue of Famitsu reveals that fans will be asked to endure the rough Guilty Gear seas once again as the series sees a major shift. It's moving from high-res 2D sprites to 3D. And that's not all.

According to 1UP's recount of the Famitsu story, Guilty Gear 2 Overture will employ real-time strategy gameplay, interspersed with 3D head to head fighting. An odd choice, yes, but we'll have to see it in action before we pass judgment.

The game is due to hit the Xbox 360 at an unspecified date. Frankly, I can't wait to see how they pull this one off.
