As a Guild Wars player this seems cool. As a promotion for Aion it kind of seems odd. I don't have much interest in Aion, but I guess an idea like this is just to get a person like me to buy the game for wings in another game.
Really, wings in GW? This is kinda stupid but smart to get even just a few more copies sold. All I know is I'm going to have to deal with people showing off their wings in town all day now instead of playing the game while thousands of noobs ask them how to do it. God damn.
@R0CKFISH: The same people who would sit around town and spam an emote like this are the same ones that will try to make emotes look like sex (All MMOs), dance naked on mailboxes (WoW), or talk in general chat about their [Penta Thrust] [Meat] [Rod] (FFXI). The same type of generic idiot we've all learn to ignore in MMOs for the past 10+ years. I doubt it's going to detract from your gaming experience anymore than it would have had they not been added.
@SpishackCola is The Black Squiggly!: The r10 /fame is some kind of unbelievably badass emote that is only gained by the truly hardcore. I hope you know the awesomeness that I speak of.
@krishna830:
I think I saw it once or twice when I was sitting around in the Battle Isles for no particular reason. I broke down in tears from the awesomeness.
From my experience with the beta, it took me two days to unlock the wings, and it would've gone even faster if I didn't have other things to do at the time.
I'm playing the trial right now and I'm definitely impressed so far. Of the games I'm trying out now (along with Spellborn, City of Heroes, and one other game) this one is the most fun. I'm really tempted to pick up the trilogy pack on Monday.
There is A LOT of people in EotN right now. In terms of finding a group to do PvE stuff in, there isn't an easier place. The semi-thinning population that has affected outposts in other campaigns (especially late game) is not prevalent in EotN. But if you want to take time to sink your teeth into GW, the first three campaigns will satisfy that and you don't need the expansion right away.
@tinky XIII: i'd suggest a slightly different approach. pick up the expansion right away and run through prophicies and then complete the expansion. with more players in EotN it's easier to form friendships and find other players that like to play with you. after making these connections it's easier to get groups for the other campaigns because you just have to convince your friends to do it with you for fun.
A happy memory for me is going through pre-searing Ascalon doing the basic level ups and joining with total strangers to go kill some creatures and gain new skills. Everything was new in those days, just a few days after the games release. I stood in the video game store with World of Warcraft in one hand and Guild Wars in the other just looking at both for a full 20 minutes. I chose Guild Wars because it had just been released, so I would be starting new like everybody else. I never regretted it.
I loved this game, but I really want to see Guild Wars 2. hopefully in 2010? Mesmer all the way!!!
@Earthjade: Amen to that. There was nothing more satisfying than having a team get through a mission smoothly and thank the tanks and the healers, while knowing that it was your interrupts and debuffs that really made the difference.
@hikaizer: it was entertaining how often, during the first playthrough of phrophicies shortly after its release, a group would go from adimently refusing to let a mesmer or ranger in the party to exclaiming how easy a task they once thought impossible was after completing it with one in the party.
I wanted to stick with GW but the game became populated pretty much solely by elitist asshats who cried over spilled milk over the smallest thing you did or didn't do ("way 2 die u fuckin noob"/"only noobs roll assassin"), and 12 year olds, who did pretty much the same thing ("put on ur helmet jackass"*). Not much middle ground.

@Erik Olson: Wow, as I mentioned in an earlier post, I've just started playing GW a few weeks ago and my experience has been just the opposite. Lots of people offered to help and group and characters of higher level often offered me better weapons or advice. I've been completely surprised NOT to run into your typical MMO idiots on GW. Honestly, when I noticed this, I felt bad for having missed out on such a great game and community. I'm now in a very friendly guild filled with people who genuinely love to play the game and want others around them to have a great time as well. Sucks you had a bad experience though. :(
@DarkGildon: I'm with you guys but a bit different. I just bought Guild Wars Platinum (guild wars + eye of the north). This is the first I've played it and I'm loving it. By the time I get finished playing this, factions, and nightfall, Guild Wars 2 will be right around the corner. Sorry for everyone who has been waiting years, but this will work out fine for me.
In some ways, being behind in gaming can help out. :)
@djnarrow: I do. I'll play through the prophecies and eye of the north over the next few months then take a break and come back to the next one a few months later, etc. I like to go easy on things like this. I doubt I'll be done with it all in less than a year.
I'm still playing Guild Wars, but I'm not sure if I'll care by 2010 or 2011. If the GW community is going to last long enough to see GW2 released NCSoft is going to have to get some new content out for the original. I'm not saying an entire campaign or expansion, but something... missions, dungeons, something.
@Iskandr: It's not like people who left Guild Wars will see Guild Wars 2 come out and go, "man, I don't even play the first one anymore, why would I play the new one?" If they liked the first Guild Wars, they'll probably pick up the second one.
@stupid_mcgee: simply the stupidest: You can say this, but the reality is that the GW community is moving on. The last major content released was Eye of the North in August of 2007, this was followed a few months later by a short three mission bonus pack. There hasn't been anything since then to keep peopled interested in GW in general. It is easy to see that players are leaving the game when you go into any major city and check how many districts are open at a given time. The community is moving on to other games. In 2010 many GW1 players will be playing something else and you can't be sure they'll play GW2.
@Iskandr: following that line of logic might lead one to believe the current number of chat lobbies on battle.net for diablo II trading is indicative of extremely poor sales of diablo III. i think it's obvious to everyone that's not the case, so will it be with guild wars II.
