Even in this economy, people will waste their money on anything. Look at all the people who bought iPhones (I'm not comparing the PSPgo to it, by the way), look at how much people pay each year for XBOX Live and WoW, and I could go on.
People will buy this. It won't do extremely well, but it will find a place in the market and it will live on. Everyone said the PS3 was going to die off because it was so expensive. I bet a year or two down the road, we'll be hearing the opposite (or at least, less of what we hear now) about this system when the time comes, as with what happens with all technology that manages to stay afloat and be marginally successful for a long enough period of time.
But yeah, my point being, if you can afford an iPhone, plus the service, and you play WoW and pay for it each month, and you can afford XBOX Live, there is nothing preventing you from being able to afford a PSPgo. It's just one more thing to toss into the already long list of things consumers blow their money on.
I feel terrible for saying this but.... I want this system to fail. Getting rid of the UMD, whatever, but this doesn't really help the battery life? The memory stick is replaced with another SONY only product. The screen is smaller and the price tag is atrocious!
There's currently no incentive for any right minded consumer to upgrade to a PSPgo. (this mainly applies to typical core gamers and gamers that have any PSP iteration before; not as much 1st time owners or casual market)
The problem is that the digital distro price point is all wrong. As much as they might offend their retail counterparts, their retail counterparts can sell you a physical copy for the same price and given that you can also sell back that same physical copy for at least 30-50% of the original costs, it puts retail copies cheaper than that of digital distribution. NIS made a decent move in cutting its prices temporary, which might be the price point most are wishing to see (4.99-9.99 games; although some are mis-priced).
Unless they can solve this problem along with the problem that many people have useless UMDs now if they get the PSPgo, Sony's going to be in sort of a rut w/ this handheld.
ok, first and foremost, am I the only one that's disappointed that there isn't a rating system for game purchases in the Store? Previews aren't standard, demos aren't standard and some of the prices are ridiculous. $10 for vanilla Tetris? O'Rly? $40 for some new releases even though there's no packaging, no shipping to retail...are we paying for the bandwidth and servers or is Sony afraid to piss off retailers by undercutting them?
Forgive me if this has been brought up before but I'm a bit dissappointed. Sony should have followed the Android Market's example...let users leave a short comment, a rating (up to five star) and if the game sucks total monkey balls, you can get a full refund within 24 hours of purchase.
Come on Sony...I mean...come on...what are gamers supposed to do if they don't know what the hell a Syphon Filter is? Purchase and pray? Fail.

@Striderhayasa - Can we get some damn m/kb support?!: In their defense on the pricing, you can firmly blame retail for that. If Sony, or Microsoft for that matter, decided to price their digitial content under retail (as they should), retail would throw a massive fit. And for the next few years, or until someone figures out a way to make a real profit selling consoles direct, Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo all need retail on their side.
I agree completely, there's 0 reason for a digital copy to cost as much as a retail, when part of the retail cost is completely negated by digital being a file on a server. But retail still has enough pull that we're kinda stuck.
Otherwise I agree completely - a comment/rating system is definitely needed. Even Apple has this for the iPhone, even up to date by version of software.

It's so nice that even without the added costs of shipping, box, book or disc that we can have DLC that costs as much or in a number of cases (Looking at you, EA, Capcom, Koei, Sony, Namco) MORE then the sealed game on some big box retailer shelves, to say nothing of Amazon. $30 for Sonic Rivals 2? Really?
I hope these are mostly just launch month prices and not the norm, but somehow I get the strong feeling that this will be the norm for a long time to come when it comes to PSP games on PSN. Yup, I sure do like me the idea of paying $30-$40 dollars for a digital file that I can't trade when I'm done with it.
If Sony wants DLC-only games to catch a foot hold, they need to get developers to take off that rape face when they see my wallet. Otherwise, till Sony gets UMD stuffed in it's grave, I might as well stick to Gamefly and Amazon.
@Foxstar is in love with Kotaku's two Brians.:
$40 for a portable game is RIDICULOUS. Never mind the fact that those prices reflect the DIGITAL copies. Why not allow Amazon and a number of other retailers sell the digital copies instead of only Sony? I'd be willing to pay for a PSPgo if I didn't think one company would rule the price points of all the games for an entire system.
I mean... what kind of game market would there be for the 360 or PS3 if you could only buy your PS3 games from Best Buy? You would have an ass-raping of game prices that would RARELY drop.
@DigitalHero: I picked one up today as well...traded my 2000 unit in and all my UMDs. I really like it so far. I already used mine for mostly remote play, movies, and downloaded games...this is a good transition for a user like me. Not for everyone...and I agree the price is waaaaay too high without the Gamestop $100 off with a PSP 2000 or 3000 trade in, but I am willing to pay a premium to own a cool toy early...hell I pre order games all the time and they drop before I get a chance to beat them. Damn you work...you take up all my time!!
I quite fond of the design of this thing. I think Sony has a great opportunity to sell games on this thing and really push the downloadable games market. I figure this is the way the industry is going. Sony Microsoft Steam Iphone and Zune have jumped on this quite enthusiastically.
Now in some ways the consumer loses in a sense that the no longer have physical copy. Can't trade in or what have you. And some of us are concerned with Sony gouging prices on PSN. But apparently they are offering some great deals. Nis is pushing games for 10 bucks U.S.
I'm really interested to see how succesful Sony is at marketing this product.
It needs to be mentioned that you can save whole game states. There is nothing in this or the review that says this. That's a pretty big deal for a portable game system, and a huge plus. You can save, then watch a movie, and later play at the exact saved moment in the game. You can't do this with the older psp hardware, only in sleep mode.

The iPhone definitely supports tethering, and it's available in a number of countries. It's not available in the US, of course, thanks to AT&T.

If it could actually be used to "morph" it might actually have a reason to be bought (even though I am no longer a teenager with 'attitude').
