GTAIV DLC Announced: "Lost And Damned", Out In Feb 09
A USA Today report is the setting for the announcement of Grand Theft Auto IV's long-awaited piece of downloadable content. Titled "Lost and Damned", the DLC will be available on February 17, and will leave Niko's story behind (though he will make a few cameo appearances) to follow the exploits of Johnny Klebitz, a member of the Lost biker gang that the game's radio channels liked to talk about so much. Relax, GTA IV Is Coming To Steam
Phew. Remember all that stuff about GTA IV and Games for Windows Live? And how the press release kept dropping words like "exclusive" and "Games for Windows - LIVE" uncomfortably close to each other? It's OK. The game isn't exclusive, either to Microsoft's GFW brand or Games for Windows - LIVE service. It's just appearing there first. A listing for Grand Theft Auto IV has since appeared on Steam, with a release date of December 3. A short delay, yes, but one that's probably all too worth it for those in the pro-Steam, anti-GFW-LIVE camp. More » -

GTA IV Keys To The City Are Surprisingly Fancy
If you got GTAIV on or just after its release, managed to rack up a 100% completion percentage and got one of those "return within seven days" emails, congratulations. You were one of the first people to "complete" the game, and earned yourself a prize. If you took the time to read that email, you'd have noticed that Rockstar warned it could take up to 120 days for your prize - a "key" to Liberty City - to arrive, depending on how many they had to make. Guess they had to make a ton of them, because they're only now, in November, shipping out to the winners. Reader MastaKwaa was one of the lucky ones, and his just turned up in the mail. If you're a fellow winner, yours will be there soon, and will look like this. If you weren't a winner, here's what you could have got yourself if you were a winner, and not a loser. More » -

How Gaming Is Surpassing Uncanny Valley
It's a tech demo that doesn’t look like a tech demo. The clip was just a woman talking. Pedestrian stuff. That is, until the woman’s face changed colors. Literally. Challenges Versus 'Learn By Death' Frustrations
A few people have written on the 'softer, kinder' ethic found in games these days — more and more games seem to be offering less challenging/frustrating mechanics so that players can actually complete them. I think a lot of this discussion does center around different play styles — after a long day of banging my head against the walls of the Ivory Tower, I don't want to come home to bang my head against the gaming wall — so I always read these essays with a critical eye. But regardless of what I (or anyone) personally like to play, it does seem like the era of extraordinarily frustrating games has passed, at least for AAA titles: More » -

GTA IV for PC Briefly — Briefly — Listed on ESRB
Whoops! Well, just as soon as it was discovered, it came back down. But Grand Theft Auto IV briefly had a listing on the ESRB web site that showed Windows PC as a platform. The screenshot, gathered by Game-on-Game is above. If you go there now, it's back to Xbox 360 and PS3 only. So who knows what the hell is going on. Erroneous? Premature? I'm going with the latter. Saints Row 2 Fires A Shot Across GTA IV's Bow With Sewage Hose
Grand Theft Auto IV is a fantastic little game, but we'll admit that it was lacking in one thing—the ability for fire liquid sewage at pedestrians. At least, that's how the marketing team tasked with pitching Saints Row 2 is hoping we're thinking, as the violent, Volition-developed sandbox game is taking on GTA IV feature for feature, with Saints Row 2 definitely coming out on top in the poo-flinging department. We'll admit that barnstorming, cage fighting and smashing faces with guitars looks like it could fill a fun afternoon, but you'll have to judge for yourself. -

Sam Houser: 360 "Needs To Sort Out" Storage
1UP recently interviewed Rockstar's Sam Houser. You should probably go read the whole thing, as it touches on some interesting stuff, but one thing's probably more interesting than the rest. It's where Houser heavily alludes to something we've been saying for a long time now: the 360 needs to sort out the issue of its non-compulsory HDD usage:One of the problems with the 360, and it affects games like Grand Theft Auto if you think about how much content we put in the actual machine, is the fact that they don't have a significantly larger storage medium than the previous systems. It's a slightly bigger DVD disc.
And with a small disc, stuff's compressed, so it takes longer to load, so to cut down on-oh. You're not done. More » -

How To: Block Our GTA IV Content
Yesterday I posted a story about a certain comedian getting featured in GTA IV. And while it was technically public knowledge, a few of you considered it a spoiler. Given that we're probably going to see a lot of these little GTA IV nuggets trickle in until its launch April 29th, it's best that you simply block our GTA IV stories if you don't want to read them. Here's the code for that:kotaku.com/tag/not:gta-iv
That code will give you Kotaku without the GTA IV. And just so you know, you could swap that "gta-iv" in the URL for anything you don't want to read about. That goes for companies, consoles and games. For what it's worth, I sincerely apologize to anyone who felt we spoiled part of the game. And for those who'd prefer not to block our content, we'll still continue to mark things that we deem spoilers as just that. -

To Microsoft, GTA IV's As Big As Halo 3
Anyone remember Halo 3? You may have heard about it last year. There was a commercial or two, aimed at promoting the product and raising the public's general awareness of it. Oh, you did? Capital. Well, you know how much money Microsoft must have spent promoting the thing? That's how much Microsoft Europe are spending on promoting Grand Theft Auto IV. Considering it's a third-party title that's also going to be available in a hardware bundle for their console rival, that's a roll of the financial dice that must have taken some big brass balls to throw down on. Watch the clip above, imagine you're an average GTA fan who's yet to buy into the current generation of consoles, and see if you think it'll be worth it More » -

Grand Theft Auto IV DLC To Bring Whole Cities?
According to CVG's recent GTA IV Collector's Edition magazine, the Xbox 360's downloadable content could be even bigger than anyone has made it out to be. It could be a whole new city.Of course, to call games as vastly ambitious as Vice City or San Andreas mere 'expansion packs' seems childish, but nevertheless, the downloadable content (DLC) coming for the Xbox 360 version of IV has repositioned those games in just this way. DLC so far has meant the odd new car, jumper of bit of horse armour...

Variety: GTAIV Launch Bigger Than Halo 3 (And Then Some)
Variety are reporting that, according to "sources close to publisher Take-Two" (ie most likely the guys in charge of selling the game to retailers), Grand Theft Auto IV is poised to take in around $400 million during its first week on sale. Yowzers. To put that in perspective, Halo 3's launch took in a paltry $300 million. To put it in further perspective, Spiderman 3 and the third Pirates movie hold the record for the two biggest worldwide opening weekends in cinema history, at $380 and $340 million respectively. So, yes, we're talking batshit crazy numbers here. They're also reporting that, based on discussions with retailers, the 360 version is easily outselling the PS3 one, though with both a higher install base and the promise of DLC, that's not the biggest shock in world news today. Rockstar Flash Fun, Just Like GTAIV, But Not At All
What will we do when GTAIV actually comes out? Play it for 1,000+ hours? How lame. We'd much rather waste our time on zany flash ads that only take 1 minute or 2 a pop. For instance, if you're as cool as us, you'll have an awkward conversation with a representative from Goldberg, Ligner & Shyster...which we're beginning to suspect may be more of an escort service than a law firm, but no harm, no foul.
