Who has $50-60 to spend on new games? Not as many people as there used to be, that's for sure. Now $30, that's more like it.

Which brings us to the two latest titles in Sony's Greatest Hits range for the PS3, Saints Row 2 and WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2009. Both have just turned up on GameStop's site, and while a listing like that would normally only be good for a "rumour" post, both also have Great Hits box art, so these are a lock.

You can't buy them yet, but with listings up, you should be able to buy them soon.

<![CDATA[These PlayStation 3 Games Are Now Greatest Hits]]> The price of the PlayStation 3 may be holding steady, but the software library just got a price cut, effective today. That includes a cheaper Metal Gear Solid 4, now sporting a tasteful new red "Greatest Hits" bar.

As previously posted, the PS3 game library welcomes six new "Greatest Hits" budget offerings in North America, all carrying a $29.99 price tag. That's a better deal on Army of Two for example, than it is on Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, which only shaved off $10 from its original price tag.

For the full lineup of new Greatest Hits additions, read on.

  • Army of Two, Electronic Arts
  • Battlefield: Bad Company, Electronic Arts
  • Devil May Cry 4, Capcom
  • Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Sony Computer Entertainment America
  • Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Konami
  • Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, Sony Computer Entertainment America

And yes, the arrival of a cheaper MGS4 is one of Konami's previously announced announcements heralded by an announcement announcement.

<![CDATA[Army of Two, MGS 4, Others Added to PS3 Greatest Hits]]> Sony today added six more Playstation 3 titles to their Greatest Hits library, dropping the price of the half-dozen to $30 each.

Army of Two, Battlefield: Bad Company, Devil May Cry 4, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Ratchet & Clank Future: Tools of Destruction all get the price drop and new packaging effective June 16.

"Games deemed ‘Greatest Hits' have reached a significant sales threshold. This latest selection features several critically acclaimed titles, including Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and Metal Gear Solid 4, which represent the high caliber of quality software that is available on the PS3 system," said Scott A. Steinberg, vice president, product marketing, SCEA. "We're looking forward to making this group of best sellers even more accessible to consumers, while we continue to deliver more value to the overall PS3 platform."

<![CDATA[PSP Greatest Hits Line Grows By 10]]> God of War: Chains of Olympus and Patapon are among the ten new PlayStation Portable titles joining Sony's Greatest Hits lineup next month.

Ten new titles receive special packaging and a special $19.99 retail price come April 5th as part of Sony's 2009 PSP push. God of War, Patapon, and SOCOM: Tactical Strike are the only first-party titles to make the cut. Ubisoft represents with Tom Clancy's Advanced Warfighter 2 and Rainbow Six Vegas, while EA brings Fight Night Round 3 and Medal of Honor Heroes 2 to the party. Finally we have Sonic Rivals 2 from Sega, THQ's SpongeBob Squarepants: The Yellow Avenger, and Mortal Kombat: Unchained by way of Midway.

It bares noting that of the ten tiles here, only God of War and SOCOM currently retail for over $19.99 anyway, so eight of these titles are simply getting new packaging. Still, its the thought that counts, and I certainly won't scoff at the chance to get Chains of Olympus for half of the $39.99 GameStop is still charging for it.

<![CDATA[Japanese PS3 Getting its Own "Greatest Hits"]]> According to reports from IGN, Sony Japan will soon be giving the Playstation 3 its own version of the Playstation 2: Greatest Hits called Playstation 3 the Best. IGN's source, an unnamed Japanese online retailer, is listing Resistance: Fall of Man, FolksSoul, Ninja Gaiden Sigma, Gundam: Target in Sight, and Ridge Racer 7 as the first five titles available. They'll be going for 3,800 yen which translates to about $35 US. The first line up of games should hit retail stores on March 19. No official word yet from Sony Japan on the subject but I expect we'll hear something soon, hopefully followed swiftly by an announcement of a similar nature for the US.

<![CDATA[PS2 Greatest Hits Include Fungous Colossi]]>

Okay, Ape Escape as a PSP Greatest Hit isn't going to have anyone tearing their panties off in one deft rip and shrieking in excitement. But the new PS2 'Greatest Hits' actually aren't too shabby. Thanks to a Circuit City leak, it looks like they are:

• Jak X: Combat Racing
• SOCOM 3
• Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves
• Shadow of the Colossus
• Ratchet: Deadlocked

That's right: Shadow of the muddafuggin' Colossus! For 20 bucks! Now that's a 'Greatest Hit'. A Ratchet game and SOCOM 3 don't hurt, either.

<![CDATA[First PSP Greatest Hits Announced]]>

The first batch of Greatest Hits titles have been announced for the Playstation Portable. For just $20 you can land yourself a copy of Ape Escape: On the Loose, Offroad Fury: Blazin' Trails, Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee, Twisted Metal: Head On or Wipeout Pure.

Why on earth would Sony put together such an atrocious list of bargin bin games for their "Greatest Hits"? Are they trying to get people to give up their Playstation Portables? Where's Lumines? Where's SOCOM? Where's GTA?

I know these games are all selling well, but come on you need to do something to spark PSP sales.

The next batch to get the price drop hit later this year. Fortunately, Lumines did make this cut. Hit the jump for the list and needless quotes.

With more than 5 million units sold, the PSP system remains North America's top-selling next-generation handheld in the period since its record-setting launch in March 2005. These first "Greatest Hits" games defined the PSP experience at launch and have contributed to the overall success of the system. "The PSP system has truly arrived with the launch of its 'Greatest Hits' collection, which we expect will drive consumer interest in the device and strong hardware growth, just as the 'Greatest Hits' programs have done for other PlayStation platforms," said Peter Dille, senior vice president, marketing, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "Summer is typically the industry's lightest season for new titles, so releasing the PSP 'Greatest Hits' now benefits many consumers who find themselves with more downtime, whether they're on a plane headed on a vacation or simply trying to beat the heat at home." Later this year, additional third-party games will go "Greatest Hits," including Lumines(TM), Midnight Club 3: DUB Edition, Star Wars Battlefront(TM) II, Tony Hawk's Underground 2 Remix, and Untold Legends(TM): Brotherhood of the Blade(TM).

Woot! If you were unlucky enough to deprive yourself of M&L:SSS until now, I really feel for you. It's not only the funniest game I've ever played, but one of the most refreshing RPG's of the 21st century.

Yes! The whole century! Just get it, you cheap bastards!
