It sold really poorly on PSP also, so Cammie's not too far off of the mark. Of course cores will ignore this, because they don't like Cammie when their like or dislike or her doesn't matter, her background and certs got her the job, not the love of neckbeards.
The problem with the game is not the marketing, and neither the platform. The PSP version is selling even worse.
The problem is that GTA became a big success after GTA3, when it went to 3D. Most people started playing GTA there, and a lot never played the first 2 games. A top down view game is not what most people expect when they think of a GTA game.
Now, the game is great and making it top-down was the only way for it to work on the DS. And I praise Rockstar for going that way. But marketing-wise, it was a bad decision.
It was an unfun game. You can't fix an unfun game with better marketing. You can't tout the game as being a "core" title either.
It's like every sentence she says is a stab wound in my gaming soul. She's lying through her teeth and she doesn't even realize it herself. Sorry Nintendo, you're fun but you're not core anymore.
Oh yeah and, hilariously, the game DID get extra marketing when it came out for the PSP, and it still failed. That's a double fail for ya Cammie. :(
@DaveKap: In the grand lexicon of subjective words, "unfun" might be the most subjective one of the bunch.
I had a blast playing it, as did a number of people (evidenced by this thread). Take into account its metacritic score (the highest rated DS game, currently) and I think you'll find you're in the minority.
No, the reasons it sold poorly have nothing to do with it being "unfun," but more that people have come to expect a certain something from GTA and Chinatown Wars offered something a little different.
The game was featured at Nintendo's E3 conference and touted as one of the two hardcore games coming out that year.
Is it REALLY bad marketing? Or is it that the game is just a niche title not destined for big sales? After all, the PSP version didn't do too well either as far as I know.
@RockyRan: I'm not sure if it's "niche" so much as "market segment."
The number of people who would be old enough and interested enough to buy a GTA game on a handheld pales in comparison to the console market. I think the game didn't sell because the audience for it on that platform is small.
@battlescarSS: No, their marketing ploy is Fox News. They just need to do something that catches the press's eye (usually just being GTA is enough), and while this got some for being GTA on a "kiddie platform," a few pixelated naked women would have gone a long way for controversy, and ultimately sales.
@Sl0th: you are right. pretty much all the information i get about upcoming video games is the internet. short ads on tv that don't show up on tv anymore after a few weeks won't help the game sell much.
@Sl0th: I don't get any of my information from television because I only watch my TV shows online and without commercials. Plus if I did watch TV on TV i would ignore commercials one way or the other.
Then again I'm the sort of gamer who never bought a game based on an advertisement unless the advertisement was alerting me that the game was finally released in my region.
@Sl0th: It's more than just marketing avenues she was talking about. More importantly, it's the duration. The Nintendo "long tail" marketing strategy regularly puts its year old titles in the top 10.
She's saying Rockstar should still be advertising GTA:CW for DS right now.
My comment was based on the marketing strategies of companies in general, rather than this specific case.
In regards to Cammie's statement:
Personally, I'm a fan of long-tail marketing.
Considering today's economy, it's smarter to market yourself incrementally and virally, as opposed to the traditional method, which involves lots of exposure over a relatively shorter period.
As the words, "I'll wait till my friends buy it" and "I'll wait for the reviews" become more commonplace, it's smart to still have a marketing presence, long after your product has shipped.

There's some more words you can learn. My mom isn't so happy about me knowing how to insult people in Cantonese but not able to hold a proper conversation.
For anyone who's interested, they are both actually in Cantonese, which is to say, Chinese that's spoken in Hong Kong, and not the common Mandarin Chinese you hear in Taiwan or most of mainland China.
Would be a shame to go to Beijing, say that and get blank stares instead of a punch in the throat.

@GohanGVO: Are you sure? I kind of remember a trailer thing going. Then again, you may be right. My memory of that E3 isn't that great.
@spiderweb1986: Yeah, I thought about that too. I don't see very many GTA fans owning a DS.

She's absolutely right, throwing up ads short term, just doesn't work anymore.
We're talking about a new generation of gamers that get only a third of their information from television.
There are various community outlets that need to be catered too, not the least of which is the internet.
*sigh*

At least, that's my opinion.

I actually taught my roommate and a Korean friend those.
