Of course, I'm also a fan of the music in MGS4... Not so minimalist (well, some of it is.) I'm just all around in love with MGS4, though. Game of the Year, for me... Easily.

Just how in the hell did you get a star for being so goddamned ignorant? So just because some game is hot shit in Japan, that means it has to be on someones GOTY list on Kotaku? Japan =/= Kotaku. Kotaku is GLOBAL, and I think you'd get that by know since you've been around here just as long as I have. Taste, it's a personal thing ... and obviously your taste doesn't align with theirs, or mine ... since I happen to like most of the games listed in the GOTY finals. Don't go around spewing such crap about how their appeasing the target demo of this blog, that's just the biggest load of bullshit.

@dead_red_eyes: Global huh? Explain to me then why their GotY list has only 3 games not developed in a western country. Besides, I know they're global, I met Bash at his book signing in TKY. But look at what they have for multiplayer- all FPSes. All games that basically use the same idea of multiplayer for the past ten years. The MHP series, not being tied to a console to run it, req'd people to go out and find other people to play with, and created a great environment for multiplayer gaming. A multiplayer game where you actually sit in the same room with the other people playing! A multiplayer game that is portable and you can immediately join with complete strangers without any stigma attached! And can't get away with all of the racist asshole bullshit that is attached to online gaming.
As for target demo, just take a look at the posts they make on this blog- it appeases primarily the mega-blockbuster well PR'd games with a nugget of freshness tossed in now and then with the little indie game segments they post. And the above list certainly doesn't do anything to provide a view otherwise (why isn't cursor*10 up for innovation?). They should have limited a title to only one category, but then we'd get guys like you yelling "why isn't GoW up for best art?!"

Personally my nomination for game of the year is Valkyrie Chronicles. Because that thing made me really, really love playing a strategic rpg.

Sound: Rock Band 2 (I've always admired Guitar Hero and progeny for what they've done with music; sure it's obvious, that doesn't mean it's not true)

Can you tell I own a PS3? Can ya? In all honesty, though, GOW2 as GOTY? It's a spectacular game, one of the best, but compared to some of the other releases this year...
Okay, I basically consider MGS4 to be the most perfect console game ever made (PC is a tie between every Valve game ever and every Blizzard game ever), but that's the reason it's my GOTY; I had never played a MGS game before (my previous experience was limited to a friend telling me in 4th grade about the area where you battle Vulcan Raven and briefly watching a family friend fight REX, both in the original MGS) and didn't have any attachment to the franchise, but I watched three hours' worth of recaps of the MGS franchise on Gametrailers, and coming into MGS4 without anything to compare it to or any franchise loyalty, it blew me away in a way that nothing has before or since.

Left 4 dead should imo be game of the year, GTA was just another GTA game, nothing great but still fun.

Don't get me wrong, each to their own. But I really have trouble seeing the merits of the above games. And I was a big fan of GTA and MGS beforehand.

Fallout 3 was also somewhat of a disappointment to me. They should have gotten rid of the FPS elements of that game and left it as an RPG. VATS was a great idea, and I used it as much as possible. Which is disappointing for me, considering how much I love FPS games. But the FPS aspect was just not up to par with other FPS games, and should have been left well alone.
I would much rather see MGS4, Valkyria Chronicles (awesome game!), Gears 2, and Left 4 Dead up there. Especially L4D, I must have put over 100 hours in that game.
