"Animator on Activision's James Bond series for the Nintendo Wii," is what the entry here [pdf] says. The work was done for Eurocom, responsible for the PS2 port of 2008's Quantum of Solace.

Unfortunately, there's nothing more to explain what this work was or the likelihood it'll see the light of day. I have emailed a press contact for Activision to ask if they would like to shed light on it. Doubtful, as most publishers refuse to comment on rumor or speculation.

<![CDATA[Rare: "We're Long Past the Stage" where Goldeneye Deal is Feasible]]> The long, sad tale of bringing the groundbreaking shooter Goldeneye to Nintendo's Virtual Console, or Xbox Live Arcade, appears to have ended long ago, with a whimper.

Addressing a reader question about Goldeneye ever getting an agreement between Nintendo and Microsoft, releasing it to current generation consoles, Rare said, alas, no.

That was some time ago, my friend. Fate was against us that day. Destiny conspired to raise the hurdles even as we attempted to clear them, resulting in unpleasant groinal injury. I suspect we're long past the stage where an agreement was on the cards, but you never know. Stranger things have happened… somewhere … probably.

Dead is how we'd characterize it for now. It's a shame. It'd be a no-brainer moneymaker, but because Nintendo and Microsoft can't figure out who gets paid first, or the most, a re-release of Goldeneye is not meant to be. Not many things were.

<![CDATA[GoldenEye Designer "Would Like" To See It On Virtual Console]]> Nintendo 64 title GoldenEye is a classic title and seems like a perfect fit for the Wii's Virtual Console. Seems, that is.

Alas, the Rare development game doesn't look like it will because of sticky legal issue: Rare is owned by Microsoft so that nixes the Virtual Console, and GoldenEye was first released on the N64 so that makes an XBLA release hard.

GoldenEye designer Martin Hollis certainly would like to see it on the Virtual Console, saying, "There's always someone with some exclusivity agreement, so there's lots of lawyers... I'm not going to hold my breath. I'd love it to happen, but I can't see it."

<![CDATA[If Only Game Covers Were As Classy As Book Covers...]]> While they're improving, game covers are still a largely generic lot. But book covers? Well, they've had centuries to get it right, and many book covers are classy. What if the two were switched?

We'd end up with these. Olly Moss has drawn up a few examples of what it would look like if classic games shared the same cover art as classic books. Specifically, Penguin's old classics range.

If the children of the 21st century do indeed go on to study the "classics" while at school, we can only hope they're handed out looking like this.

<![CDATA[Microsoft: British Mag Taking The Piss, GoldenEye Not Coming To XBLA]]> Hope you didn't get your hopes up. Britain's Xbox World 360 magazine has been cock-teasing for a little while that they've got some BIG NEWS regarding GoldenEye on Xbox Live Arcade. Hands-on impressions, screenshots, the works. Which was an odd thing to be boasting, because we'd heard that the project had been shitcanned. So why were they banging on about it? Who knows. Microsoft have issued a statement over their story, which reads:

The story in Xbox World 360 is based entirely on rumour and speculation. Unfortunately, we were never contacted by the publication to confirm information or participate in the story in any way, as we would have confirmed that we do not have the necessary rights to release GoldenEye on Xbox Live Arcade.
Like I said, hope you didn't get your hopes up.

<![CDATA[Next Xbox World 360 Features Goldeneye]]> The UK's Xbox World 360 magazine blog has been teasing readers over the past week or so with snippets of a screenshot (like the one seen here) from a game they will be featuring in their next issue, which hits stands February 27th. After puzzling over the pieces with the help of several of our readers, we've come to the conclusion that it is indeed the abandoned port of Rare's N64 classic Goldeneye for Xbox Live Arcade. They'll have shots from the game and hands-on impressions, but don't be getting your hopes up.

There'll be no satisfying conclusion... but maybe, together, we can take down the whole system. Or, er, change a few minds.
Or at the very least move a few magazines, right? Hit the link to browse the heartbreaking screenshot snippets.

<![CDATA[Goldeneye Source Beta Live]]> After suffering a last minute delay, the beta version of Goldeneye Source has been released. A remake of the classic Nintendo 64 shooter built from the ground up to take advantage of Valve's Source engine, Goldeneye Source is available for download from the official site (or any of its many mirrors).

Keep in mind this is a beta release, one that was pushed to make a near-holiday live date, so expect some buggy behavior. I'm away from my gaming PC at the moment, but I'm going to give it a shot tomorrow when I return to LA.

<![CDATA[Reggie On Vague Release Dates, GoldenEye And Wii-Mote Injuries]]>

In a meal of an interview, Nintendo honcho Reggie Fils-Aime tells MTV's Stephen Totilo that Metroid for the Wii will be out after Marty Party 8 hits in March. Okay, but what about Super Mario Galaxy?! That'll be out anytime between the end of March and next Christmas.

Gee, that narrows it now.

Other morsels: There is not DVD-playing Wii headed towards the US anytime soon. Third party companies can drop Miis into games, but Reggie claims not to have any footage as of yet. And with developer Rare owned by Microsoft and Activision snapping up the James Bond license, is GoldenEye out? Says Reggie:

Would I love to see it on virtual console? Absolutely. But there are a lot of issues there. Suffice it to say we would love to see it, so we're exploring all the rights issues.

Good. And when not dropping hints about upcoming releases, Reggie offered up Wii-mote safety tips, safely placed after the jump.

  • "One, when your hand gets sweaty, wipe it off."
  • "Second, you have to make sure you're using the wrist strap appropriately."
  • "And third, don't let go of the Wii remote when you're pitching in the baseball game or bowling."

Cheers, Reggie!

<![CDATA[Game Geezers Grinding Their Gums at 12-Year-Old Goldeneye Critic]]>

The Addicted Geek ran one of our younger brethren, a 12-year-old gamer nicknamed Minigeek, through the gauntlet of GoldenEye and recorded the boy's responses for posterity. Addicted did it for the sake of testing the supposed "timelessness" of the title, and he was vastly disappointed with the boy's lack of sensitivity for his entrenched nostalgia.

Said the Wee Geekling:

Hah! The singleplayer was one of the worst I have ever played. The storyline seemed latched on and forced, and the level design was terrible - I kept on getting lost! The cluncky graphics didn't help either - if you could call those boxes 'graphics' at all. There were also so many bugs in the game - I got stuck in the stairs, and the way aim is controlled is horrible. I didn't like it anyway. The controls again seemed forced. And as for the AI, it's about the same as the zombies in Crimsonland - 'move towards you and fire - don't care if a wall is in the way - run into wall' and so on and so forth.

Which of course sparked bloody outrage in the comments of the post, where hair-trigger commentators bitched about everything from the boy's suspicious eloquence to his "flawed opinion" (eh?).

Crotchety gamers are becoming as much of an annoyance these days as any other type of snob. A boy who's been fed Thanksgiving dinners cannot be spooned Gerber's Chicken and Peas for the first time and then be expected to clamor for more. The time comes to put away childish things, and stop mistaking nostalgia for value.
