As others have said, this has the potential to fall because people are cheap and won't subscribe to get the game they get for free plus a few extra features (even if they're big features.)
I'm somewhat eager to find a new MMO shooter. I loved Planetside during its prime, and still play it from time to time. But I want something new and feature-rich. I'll keep my eye on this one, but with Planetside 2 on the horizon, I may end up waiting on that. #globalagenda

Wow, that was a really stupid idea. Good luck with that.
Not that this doesn't sound interesting, but in my experience fragmenting the player base for an FPS is NEVER a good idea. Besides Halo, what other paid expansion HASN'T killed an FPS? Have the servers end up running the new maps, only 25% of the people out there actually HAVE the maps, and people move on to something new.
I think they would be better served going one way or another with it. You try to have your cake and eat it too, you tend to find out it's not that great of cake.

On the PC, it's not really a huge deal. Yeah, there are a couple maps you can't play, but being that it's the PC they have a shit-ton of user-made maps downloadable as soon as you connect to the server that it never becomes an issue. If you don't have the map, you connect and wait two minutes, and you are playing right along side everyone else.
On a console, it's a lot more restrictive. There aren't any user-made maps. Unless the companies approve them, you aren't going to see any new content. And of course, they want to get some money for it.
As great as Killzone 2 was, it's hard to find a server to stay connected to for more than a few minutes, thanks to the official ranked servers all running the expansion. Yet only one or two of those servers are full during those maps, most of them are damn near empty. And you could almost watch the player base incrementally shrink with each expansion of Warhawk. Some servers running two of the packs, some running all of them, most of them running none of them... It just forced people to move on because finding a server became more of a hassle than it was worth.
Yes, Hellgate had a LOT of other issues. But one of the major ones was that the paid members had so much better gear and whole other zones to explore (though it still looked like another sewer, no doubt). This, well, at least you have a fully serviceable FPS game. But if you think these bonuses won't create characters that are that more elite, you're fooling yourselves. All those lands and bases you capture, all the alliances you form, auction houses for better weapons and gear... They had better give you SOME increased benefit. Otherwise, what the hell is the point?
My personal opinion is that all players have to have full access to all aspects of the game, or the fragmentation will quickly lead to irreparable rifts. As this game is essentially picking up the torch where Planetside left off, I'd like to not see it die right out the door before it has a chance to shine. #globalagenda

Firstly, I think it's a brilliant move. Options options options. Can't fault them for that. Buy the game and play it without spending more. Love it? Want to spend alot of time and explore the game's possibilities further? Then *upgrade* to a monthly plan. Some may see that as "holding out" on content and will argue that point, but I don't care enough about this title to really defend my viewpoint, so forgive me if I don't get into it with those who have an opposing opinion.
Secondly, they've deviated from the "set in stone" price of 15 dollars a month down a bit to slightly lower price. It's a good sign that says "we may not have as much to offer in terms of other larger online worlds, but we're not charging as much as them either." Which is quite a shift when you think about how companies produce games that are lesser in content and quality as other more well established titles, yet have the chutzpah to charge the same premium.
Hey it may not be a big deal or whatever, but in this industry with the trends we've seen? A small step towards sanity is something at least, and something you don't see every where you look so it stands out when you do see it. #globalagenda
