Sony CEO Approved By Sony Board of Directors |

Can someone explain this to... someone... other than me. My friend, you see, was having difficulty understanding this. And I... have this friend who wants to know how a strong yen would lead to heavy losses.
Keep it simple for him.

I imagine Stringer has busy enough days that he can't afford to spend them deciding what specific features should be included in the PSP, PS3, Bravia TVs, camcorders, music players, AVRs, laptops, and all the other products that Sony sell.
One of the ways he can save Sony, as you say, is by appointing the right people to make those decisions. You can't expect the president of a huge multinational corporation to oversee everything from the very bottom to the very top.

He would, however, decide whether the car should be more or less family-friendly, more or less luxurious, he'd set a budget... A mission statement, if you will, which then shapes the specifics.
Ford deciding to build a hybrid car is in no way of the same magnitude as Stringer telling Kaz, "Put a second analog stick on that thing, will ya?"
My point is that Stringer, as a CEO, might say something like, "We're going to move away from proprietary formats for all our products, and embrace open formats", not make an pinpoint request like, "Our next music player should be compatible with FLAC files" (well, I'd love it if he did, but that's beside the point :D ).
Of course, he will sometimes make specific suggestions to department heads, push some very precise items, but the sheer number of products in the company makes it physically impossible for him to be involved in such detail as you seem to be expecting.
@Windowlicker: Hirai wasn't removed from anything, quite the contrary: he was given additional responsabilities on top of the SCEI business.

I'm using a Sony 46" LCD as my PC monitor and PS3 display device (Who needs TV when you have a 120mb fiber line for streaming and downloading?). It's Japanese model # KDL-46X1 (essentially the US's XBR 6 upgraded to the Bravia Engine 2 Pro).
Expensive, but amazing picture and I like the bezel - it looks black, but in direct light it's actually a shade of blue.

(Just kidding, I know you didn't mean that literally.)

seriously,
sony has worse problems to worry about than a second analog stick on psp. their main goal should be to
a) begin the phasing out process os PS2 slowly.
b) position the PS3 as the go to console.
c) continue support for psp games
honestly if Sony can work around the whole BC thing with an emulation FW update. perhaps that could help move over the ps2 crowd to the ps3. that coupled with a price drop in the holidays would be a nice way to start 2010.
but yeah analog nubs and custom soundtrack ftw :P

if the ps3 is 300 after holidays, ps2 users would like be more inclined to make the leap on the ps3. keep in mind, ps2 bridges the gap to the PS3. if they can somehow market the PS3 as next step, without leaving ps2 users behind (software emulation)
they would:
a) keep ps2 users happy while getting them to be interested in PS3 games
b) increase the install base for ps3 tremendously.
c) would help adopters of the PS3 to buy into Blu-Ray.
im not saying it will happen tomm. but i think that would be their next step moving forward.

Looks like that scene from Ghostbusters when Ray is possessed by the painting.

Don't they all just sit at a long mahogany table bragging about how many millions they get for destroying a company?

Chairman - is in charge of board meetings.
Chief executive - is in charge of day-to-day running of company.
President - sits on diamond ebony throne, wielding Sceptre of Ultimate Power and stroking pet tiger.

I sent it as a tip over the week-end - it's a fair bit more detailed, notably about Sony's PlayStation business.
Sony sorely need someone with a firm hand, and hopefully this new position will make it easier for Stringer to do his job.
While I obviously don't know the nitty-gritty specifics of how he intends the change the company, I do like the general philosophy he's expressed in a number of interviews.
I also like that he has no problem admitting Sony screwed up their transition to the "network age" (he mentions the Walkman-to-iPod shift as an example of how Sony was "beaten").
