Space Invaders Infinity Gene requires pretty fast, precise controls, and plays splendidly on the iPhone. It doesn't use an on-screen d-pad, you just put your thumb on the screen and the slightest movement will move the ship. It works great. rRootage on the iPhone uses this too. It's certainly a viable platform for shmups. #rtype
@SmokeyZeke: you made my argument, sir: Space Invaders Infinity Gene is a very good shmup and is really playable with touch controls.
I wouldn't be so negative about R-Type on iPhone. If they go the "drag to move, auto-fire" way, it could be a blast to play.
EDIT: and by reading the full article on TouchArcade, we will have "D-pad, touch, and tilt controls". Pretty sure that D-pad will suck, touch could be good, and ... tilt? How do you play tilt?!
Naw Brain, Capcom did us dirty with GnG but you want to talk about ball breaker, fury inducing rage?
Play the Dual Rajang mission in Monster Hunter Freedom 2 or do the Land and Sky Mission in Monster Hunter Freedom.
Dual Rajang are two Rajangs in an arena and Land and Sky is a Rathian and a Rathalos in an arena.
Anyone that's played a through Monster Hunter will tell you those two missions are fucking ridiculous. Two of the hardest completions I've ever accomplished and if I can help it, I'll never play through those again.
Capcom....you bastards, how we love you still despite the pain and abuse...
@DugDawg: If more than 12 people had actually finished this game, I'm sure those phrases would have become internet memes that we'd be fed up with by now. So... thank you Capcom for making the game damn near impossible?
Did they do this in Ultimate Ghosts n' Goblins? Because dude, I couldn't get through that game the FIRST time. If I had to do it a second time, I wouldn't have a PSP anymore.
@Stinkfinger: Have you heard the Nazomakaimura version? It's a Saturn import Ghosts n' Goblins themed Incredible Machine clone that uses symphonic arranged music from the game. It's excellent stuff. It's all redbook if you're interested and worth picking up for that alone if you see it cheap.
@Hello Mister Walrus: One guy did a whole series of Let's Play IWBTG, and he was about to strangle his keyboard at Birdo. He literally went crazy. It was quite entertaining.
Yeah, I definitely never got that far in that game. I would have had to pull out the cartridge and hit it with the "sledge'0'matic" if I had witnessed that while playing.
@ZaxxonQ.com: No, cheating defeats the purpose, the purpose is to show the world how fucking angry you are at that game and you are willing to molest it from all sides to show it who's boss.

But still, I do not and never will see it as a gaming platform. The same way I don't see any phone as a gaming platform.
Call me close minded if you like. #rtype
