<![CDATA[ Coming Soon had a chance to speak with producer ... ]]> Coming Soon had a chance to speak with producer Michael De Luca (21, Ghost Rider) and he passed along news that a Metal Gear Solid movie, based off the long-running hit espionage video game franchise, is once again going ahead. The project has been in the very early stages for sometime (see eerily similar Slashfilm post from Feb ‘07), and faced a set back from the writer’s strike. Moreover, De Luca says that a meeting will take place in the “next few weeks” with writer/director Kurt Wimmer about adapting a screenplay for the film.

Though De Luca didn’t directly state it, this probably means that Wimmer is also up to direct the big budget affair, as his previous films, Equilibrium starring Christian Bale and Ultraviolet starring Millo Jovovich, were similar fanboy-intensive, kinetic action/genre flicks. Neither one of those films connected at the box office, however, so MGS would be the director’s closest shot at bagging a sure thing, the whole video game curse notwithstanding. Wimmer’s next screenplay to hit the big screen will be April’s LAPD thriller Street Kings with Keanu Reeves.

Video game synopsis: Metal Gear Solid follows Solid Snake, a retired soldier who infiltrates a nuclear weapons disposal facility to neutralize the terrorist threat from FOXHOUND, a renegade special forces unit.

<![CDATA[ RETRO JOY Atari Candleholder ]]> candleholder_400.jpgMost of the time, the world gets the best of us. Where we should stand up to social norms, we quietly sit down, assimilate and eat our honey-baked ham and pretend to like to wear festive sweaters with snowflake detailing. Don't let the guilt of lame tradition get you down this holiday season. Bust out a pair of these RETRO JOY Atari candlestick holders at your next meal.

...and then be surprised as your grandma confesses her Atari 2600 addiction and tells tales of missing phone calls and visits from friends and neighbors because she couldn't pause Pac-Man. Each will run you a hefty $100, but if they were any less, everyone would own them.

<![CDATA[ Swarovski Crystal Wii Owners Can't Complain Ever ]]> If you are lucky enough to own not only a Wii but a one-of-a-kind Zelda Wii covered in 7,500 24-carat dipped Swarovski crystals, then no, you can't complain to us about much of anything. Sure, you may still have family or relationship problems—we know money can't buy happiness. But apparently money very much can buy objects that induce happiness by attracting new friends and new family to your prominence. But if the custom Wii is our of your price range, maybe you'll settle for the same designer's swank Mario DS:

mario9.jpgAt $350, that DS is not such a bad price. And I'll admit it...I actually kind of like it. But only kind of.

<![CDATA[ MGS4: 5 Locations and Live Action Open? ]]>

As Luke reported last week, we now know three of the locations in Metal Gear Solid 4: the Middle East, South America and Eastern Europe. But there's more: When I was interviewing Ryan Payton for last week's Game Head at the E For All Expo, he also let slip that there are two other top-secret locations.

Any guesses as to the other two locales? Here's one comment from Ryan that didn't make the Game Head show: "The last location is a place you've been waiting to visit for 20 years."

Also, Ryan mentions that the opening sequence for the game will include live action footage mixed with CGI. It's being created by Logan, the design firm behind the iPod ads and the Metal Gear Solid 4 logo.

<![CDATA[ DDR UK's Gear Stolen ]]>

UK site and party in a van DDR UK got their gear swiped. According to the DDR UK team someone broke into their van and stole £25,000 worth of rare games and equipment that they use to run gaming events around the UK.

Anyone with information about the stolen gear should send us, or them an email. I've posted up the full press release on the jump.

To the Community

It is our unfortunate duty to announce that, on the night of the 18th of August, DDR UK's equipment store was broken into and burglarised.

All the boxes of consoles and games, including bags of electrical equipment were stolen - effectively the entire gaming arsenal of DDR:uk, short of the DDR machine itself.

Below, we include an approximate list of what was taken, but before we get onto that we would like to make a plea for information to aid us in tracking down the equipment. We know this is a shot in the dark, but if anyone knows anything we are willing to put a reward to anyone who can provide information leading to the reclamation of the gear. If you do know anything, please contact us or Kingston upon Thames Police Station.

The amount of games, consoles and other equipment that was stolen is too vast to list in its entirety, but this summary should give you an idea how badly we have been affected:

Over 100 console games for a variety of consoles - many of them classics for consoles that have long been out of production. They include, but obviously are not limited to, the Dancing Stage games, a near complete collection of Beatmania for Japanese PS1, Pop'n'Music 9 through 12 for Japanese PS2, and naturally all of our DDR games across the gamut of gaming platforms.

The stolen consoles included: three Sega Mega Drives, a Mega CD, a 32x add on for the Mega Drive, a Sega Saturn, a Dreamcast, a Playstation, two English PS2s, a Japanese PS2, an Xbox, a Nintendo DS and a PSP - the entire DDR:uk console collection.

They also took the wires, memory cards, save games and controllers including the specialist controllers for games like Guitar Hero. Also stolen were the 24" LCD monitor, the colour laser printer, all of DDR:uk's Hi-Fi and sound equipment, one of the dance mats and several boxes of computer parts.

Ultimately, the value of the stolen goods comes to some £25,000 - this has severely crippled us, both in terms of equipment and finance. DDR:uk has been left unable to do any events in the future. We do not know whether the culprits will be caught, and even if they are it is uncertain whether or not we will retrieve our stolen equipment. So here comes our second request.

If you have anything you can spare - unwanted games, unused consoles, old controllers, spare wires - anything whatsoever, we humbly ask that you consider donating it to our cause. DDR:uk has spent several years bringing classic videogames and first-class gaming entertainment to festival, convention and Expo attendees across the country, and we do not want this crime to stop us providing that service! We would so incredibly grateful for anything you could donate!

Thank you all for your help.
The DDR:uk Team

DDR UK
