Penny Arcade has a lot of weight with gamers and I think it's good that they are giving iPhone games exposure. If nothing else it will help ease the stigma of iPhone games not being "real" games. Games like this should be celebrated if for nothing else to help create even better quality games.
Despite what a lot of people are saying I believe that in the end this will be good for the industry.
First of all it makes gaming even more mainstream which is always a good thing.
Secondly it allows developers to try new things and for consumers to try out new IPs/ideas without the cost of spending a lot on a game. If the game tried something new but wasn't that great you are only out a few bucks.
Lastly I believe this will get a lot of people into game development. The iPhone has a very nice development community (full disclosure I am a registered iPhone developer) that for the most part is really enthusiastic. Free game engines such as Cocos2D for iPhone, make development very fast and easy and allow people who aren't big programmers to develop new high quality games.
I just hope Apple realizes this and doesn't make any (more) bone headed moves (transparency in app selection) and makes things even easier for future developers to get in on action.
I would love to see Johnathan Blow's take on this.
A beautifully done, completely visceral game about the intricacies and wonder of the sexual experience, only to reveal at the very end that he is still a virgin.
A game about there first time? This sounds a bit lame. Seems like it's just sensationalist considering games are currently getting lambasted for there virtual rape (mass effect) etc. I'd much rather hear them try and do something a bit more imaginative than a sex game.
@xxXX_Insanities_Birth_XXxx: Ok, here's the thing, this idea is very hilarious, if you think outside the box - think more along the lines of metaphors, parables, etc. and not just of a cheap gimmick sex game.
You could actually make a rather atmospheric horror game that's a satire of the first time. For instance, imagine an FPS where you're roaming some dark, massive, archaic school, taking down homework, teachers, job, and other distractions in search of the mystical cl*toris (it's in the janitor's closet, by the way).
Or how about a game where you have to pump air into a balloon, and you keep pumping, and you keep pumping, and you keep by pumping, but you pump so much that you overdue it and the balloon explodes all over the female compatriot standing next to you (she looks very good covered in red, by the way).
Or, there's always a good old-fashioned text adventure. Just imagine the possibilities...
A girl is lying on a bed
>move closer
You move closer to the girl. She has a curious look on her face. You're slightly confused and don't know what to do. She has an expression that she wants you to do something to her
>examine girl
Your hands start to move all over her, she starts to moan in pleasure. She says she feels hot.
>remove her shirt
You take offer her shirt (boobz!!). However, since you are a newb and have never seen breasts in person (save for your mothers), you j*zz in your pants. Congratulations, you fail at life.
>go to bathroom to clean up
You apologize immensely about the awkardness and rush quickly to the bathroom. You forget to turn on the bathroom light and hear a noise.
>examine noise
Oh shit! It's a grue. The grue smelled the scent of your failure and was able to find you. The grue eats you. The grue then goes into your room and makes proper love to the girl you should have been seducing. Congratulations, not only do you fail at life and are dead, but a grue just bonked your girlfriend. Nice.
P.S. That's not based on my first time. >looks left, looks right< Uh.... yeah...
@Brenden Groom: Commenting? Cause from what I can tell, it was quite terrible.
-or-
That's strange, that looks like a joke, and I think I'm supposed to laugh, but I'm not laughing.
.......
For future reference, you need to add details, real or not, otherwise this comment is completely worthless. This isn't the type of story where you can offer a run-off joke like that and it will be funny; this is a set-up situation and you missed out on the punchline.
@toxictwinkies: I'll acknowledge that I was rather harsh, but no, I didn't look too deep into it, as there's not much depth in the first place. If anything, I made a bigger deal out of it than need be.
By the way, how could I ruin something that was already ruined?
For clarity, the first two lines are harsh and sarcastic, whereas the last one is trying to be constructive criticism. I'll take back the 'completely worthless' comment, but you have to admit that there was a greatly missed opportunity in the line/joke. I will admit that I chuckled a little when I first read it, because the idea is there, but there's a lack of execution.
But yeah, I definitely putting in much more than I have to on this topic.
I that I heard it would be on XBLA. Anyhoot, maybe the guy has one of those features that automatically maps the game to a controller as the 360 controller works on the PC, you may get the same kinda prompt on th PC as well.
Considering how fucking brilliant this game is, it would not surprise me at all if these guys decided to release it on the various consoles. I just hope they also do a PC release.
After playing this thing at the GDC last year, I decided I would buy this game on every platform if I could afford it. It's that great.
Oh man, I would love to get that on xbla! The videos of this from last year were so great. We really need stuff like this - other than Braid and Portal most of the puzzle offerings on XBLA involve matching three of things (bunnies, playing cards, gems and skulls).
@theuglyteradon: no, i think he's right. braid is great. so is Castle Crashers. and so are geometry wars 1 and 2. nintendo has lost wind (and soon "Cave Story") not to mention a HUGE library (of varying quality) titles from the yesteryear of the once-unstoppable Nintendo brand. but many of the best XBLA titles are available on other platforms: bionic Commando rearmed is on PSN also, so is Mega Man 9. i have had Rez and Ikaruga for years on last gen platforms. as far as unique titles that are built from the ground-up, exclusively for XBLA- there just isn't really that much, anymore :(
@laser beams: You really can't give credit for pre-existing WiiWare games such as Cave Story and then turn around and dock XBLA for Rez, Ikaruga, and N appearing elsewhere as well. Too many PSN fans so readily discount such titles to paint a picture of a barren XBLA, nevermind that these are AAA games which the vast majority of users had not been exposed. In addition, there's a fountain of original (and cheap) content at Community Games, which also gets unfairly disregarded despite the innovation and fun to be had there.
Does anyone know-now that Bioware is teamed up with EA-that whether this game might be multiplatform? I had the game for the PC and i think it was probably one of the best RPGs i've ever played (KOTOR still holding the first). I'd really like to pick the game up for my PS3 instead (my computer really isnt a gaming rig =/)
Bioware's official statement is that it will be exclusive to 360 at least for sometime. They have no mention of multi-platform release at this time, but it is very possible after a timed exclusive.
