I haven't moved past the level with the giant plants and poison gas pockets.
A few things have held me back, most notably the shoddy targeting system (if you can call it that) and sludgy controls.
I will get back into it eventually. Somehow my Bro-in-law loved it and beat it in 48 hours. He also has a room full of Star Wars figurines a-la 40 Year Old Virgin. Go figure.

I always thought that clutter was very important to the steam-punk style, and those screens are pretty barren.
