Wood working tools are for balsa/linoleum carving like these (actually exactly these, but I got them from a local hobby store):

Sewing Tracer (this one is better than mine):

Print out the artwork, then tape it to the pumpkin. Trace with tracer and thumbtacks to transfer the image to the pumpkin. Then go over all the lines, and cut away material to get less/more depth and shadow.

Thanks for the advice, guys! If I practice every day until this time next year, maybe I'll have a Kotaku-worthy pumpkin. If I don't practice and just wing it the day before, there's always Joystiq. ;-)
