Between developers, studio heads and console manufacturers — and occasionally community director versus producer — there's plenty of fodder for mudslinging fun. The most recent episode of GameTrailers' "Invisible Walls" podcast, however, is just kind of a bum out. It touches on a recent request from the ESRB to various media outlets, including GameTrailers, that they pull any and all Fallout 3 trailers.

In GameTrailers case, that means even stuff the MTV-owned media outlet creates, not just the stuff Bethesda Softworks provides.

GameTrailers editor-in-chief Shane Satterfield, perhaps still a bit sore over the unusual request, likens the ESRB to "the frickin' Mafia," saying on the video podcast the ratings board's actions are part of a "power trip."

His partner in podcasting "Grumpy" is a little less diplomatic (and far more wordy), saying "They are a body made up of unqualified nincompoops. Unfortunately, they're taking the nanny state to the nth degree. They make the FCC look like a bunch of broad-minded, non-censorship individuals."

The only reasoning provided by the ratings board was that the Fallout 3 content should be pulled “in connection with ESRB's advertising guidelines." Print ads for Fallout 3 were pulled earlier in the year amid concerns that seeing Washington DC destroyed by a nuclear disaster were, you know, scary. No confirmation from the ESRB if the potential for bed-wetting nightmares was at the cause of this particular media whitewashing.

<![CDATA[ The Warcraft Retrospective - From Utopia To Adventures ]]>
Gametrailers has just launched part one of their in-depth look at everything Warcraft, The Warcraft Retrospective. It's a comprehensive look at the origins of the Blizzard property, and when I say comprehensive I mean they go back to the original real-time strategy game, Don Daglow's 1982 game Utopia for the Intellivision, through Warcraft 1 & 2, and even feature footage from the abandoned Warcraft Adventures game. So entertaining and informative that I almost forgot to set this post live.

<![CDATA[ 8-Bit Office: Inside GameTrailers' New Office ]]> Way back before E3, during a visit to LA, I sat down with N'Gai Croal, Stephen Totilo and Geoff Keighley to talk about what was to come. After taping four segments, which were later aired in the lead up to E3, we were invited to go check out GameTrailers spanky new offices.

The offices, technically for Spike Digital Entertainment and GT, were actually still in the decoration stage of things. A team of artists were wallpapering and painting every square inch of the place with splashes of color, style and culture. Among the pop video game references I noticed were a Mario and Luigi, some Space Invaders, Billy Mitchell (complete with a bottle of hot sauce) and a Gears of War cog. In fact there were way too many references for me to list, so instead I took a bunch of pictures. See how many you can find and if you're into office pics than you have to check out our MASSIVE compilation of Work and Play photos of some of the top people in gaming.

<![CDATA[ UPDATE: My <s>Half</s> Whole-Assed Attempt to Give You the Resident Evil 5 Trailer ]]>

OK, after much teeth gnashing, I realized that the trailer referenced in Gametrailers TV super-galactic exclusive show last night is actually available unto itself at, naturally, Gametrailers. So there it is.

But the countdown has stopped at Capcom's official Resident Evil 5 site , so the site has fully launched. You can catch the trailer there, and check out other eye candy for the game. That is all.

<![CDATA[ Dead Space: Glimpses of Outer Space Carnage ]]> Gametrailers put up this, the second teaser of Dead Space which releases October for the PS3 and 360. It's a backstory trailer, which justifies your reasons for hanging out in outer space with a bunch of rejects from the casting call to "The Mist," while dressed like Boba Fett stuffed into a radiator. I mock it because I doubt I'd play this more than 30 minutes without getting up to pace the room. Creepy games make me edgy as hell.

<![CDATA[ Gametrailers Blows It with PS3/360 Footage ]]> So I poked the console-wars snake last week and learned a big Fat Albert lesson about people's feelings in the process. Gametrailers, with a longer history than me, not so much.

We've been hearing a lot of chatter about how they botched a comparison video of Race Driver: GRID. In an attempt to show cooler crash physics on the 360, they used PS3's instead — easily identifiable by the controller map in the lower left corner. Doh!

Gametrailers took down the video after getting barbecued in the comment flamewar. But someone already YouTubed it and spliced in comments pointing out the negligence, or worse.

Anyway, here you go. Just shows that console comparison is absolutely the third rail discussion in our neck of the woods. And if you undertake it, everything has to be bulletproof, or you'll get ripped for looking like a shill.

Another highly entertaining "Meet the" video for Team Fortress 2 is up at Gametrailers. Here we get acquainted with the Scout, who has kind of a Kevin Bacon mien about him. <![CDATA[ A Look Back at the Games of Star Wars ]]>

GameTrailers just put up their first episode in a ten-part look at the history of Star Wars video games. While it takes awhile to get going, once they do start talking about the games, it gets pretty interesting looking at such classics as the Atari 2600 retro pack Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back, Star Wars Arcade in its vector graphics goodness and Star Wars Jedi Arena on the 2600.

<![CDATA[ GameTrailers Covers E For All ]]> gametrailerslogo.jpgAdding to their stellar lineup of Electronic Arts, Konami, Nintendo, and a slew of companies you could care less about, IDG World Expo has just introduced two brand new exhibitors to the E For All Expo hall. GameTrailers and Xfire now join the ranks of the few, the proud, the actually showing up. The two MTV brands will be bringing the show home in true GameTrailers style, with interviews of industry insiders, videos of events, and on-location shoots of GT originals Bonus Round and Game One. The brands have contests and promotions lined up for the event, including ticket giveaways for those too cheap to pay for a ticket. This is great news for the gaming press and the gaming community in general, as it pretty much means we can sit home and watch GameTrailers' coverage instead of actually attending. Huzzah!

E for All Expo Adds MTV Networks' GameTrailers and Xfire to Its Growing List of Leading Industry Exhibitors

GameTrailers and Xfire Make Presence Felt through Onsite and Broadcast Activities at the Inaugural Video Game Event

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.—Oct. 4, 2007—IDG World Expo today announced that GameTrailers and Xfire, both divisions of Viacom Inc.'s (NYSE:VIA) (NYSE:VIA.B) MTV Networks Entertainment Group, have signed on to participate in Entertainment for All(TM) Expo (E for All(TM)) (www.EforAllExpo.com), scheduled for October 18-21, 2007, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The two MTV Networks gaming brands join a list of more than 70 participating companies in the consumer-friendly interactive entertainment event.

E for All attendees and fans at home will have the opportunity to get up close and personal with GameTrailers' extensive interactive stage. Xfire(TM) gaming stations will offer mini-tournaments and
"shoot the pro" challenges along with live celebrity chats from the floor. In addition, GameTrailers' original shows, "Bonus Round" and "Game One" will shoot on-location, featuring exclusive, live interviews with industry luminaries, top gamers and fans onsite.

"GameTrailers and Xfire wouldn't miss the opportunity to participate in E for All and look forward to bringing the show home to the GT community with our in depth coverage," said Jon Slusser, SVP Spike digital media entertainment group.

In addition to their plans for on-site, the two brands - GameTrailers and Xfire - have planned contests and promotions surrounding their participation in E for All Expo - including ticket giveaways and prizes leading up to and on-site at this inaugural event.

"We are thrilled to have GameTrailers and Xfire on board for E for All," said Mary Dolaher, CEO of IDG World Expo. "Their interactive stage will be a huge draw for game fans at the event. E for All is all
about the people who are passionate about games, and this kind of content provides even more opportunity for the community of gamers to gather."

<![CDATA[ MTV's Best of for E306 ]]> MTV's GameTrailers have cobbled together their own Best of E3 Awards, because lord knows we need more of those. This one has 22 categories and 110 nominees. It doesn't help that the GameTrailers awards make their first screw-up in the very first category.

According to the press release, all of the nominees, with the exception of the best trailer award, were playable at the show. So how did Assassin's Creed make the list? Or do they mean that it was playable by the people doing the demo, because to the best of my knowledge only the people demoing the game actually got their hands on a controller.

The winners of this latest awards line-up will be announced on Friday. Hit the jump for the full list of finalists. —Brian Crecente

<![CDATA[ Gametrailers Snatched Up by MTV ]]> Video Killed the Media Star

In a heartwarming tale of rags to riches, Gametrailers has been grabbed by MTV, says Next Generation. The excellent trailers site began as a small outfit run out of a garage and has developed into one of the premiere sources for downloadable and watchable game media on the web. Gametrailers will hopefully retain the same great content, but now with bad R&B playing in between trailers.
