@Boom-Chicka-Ah: All of her issues have been with the rating of mature video games. So, I don't see how she would have a problem with something like this.
Yes. Something like this only makes sense. As more children play video games so should we use this too our advantage as a way of teaching them. You don't create something new to get their attention, you change what's already captivated them to what you want to teach them.
@Atomsk88: If done right, that game could be hilarious and awesome. Somehow though, I just know there's a flash game out there that's already tried this and failed miserably.
experiments give light to new experiences in gaming. i for one hope this works and it is great to see that developers are taking different mediums into account instead of just movies or tv shows.
God, I hated writing on this piece. How this could translate into something even mildly entertaining is beyond me. Philosophy in games is great and all (see Bioshock), but I can't see how this would be enlightening.
Philosophy.. in Bioshock. Uh, let's see.. "Megalomania! A scourge on humanity, or a necessary engine for change!". Um, or.. "Human limitation - why not take drugs and overcome them at the cost of your sanity, unless you're a really sane person I guess!". Or.. "Messiah complexes! Born from the celestial beings and their appreciation for man's piety, or man's desire to become god! Or heck, what about both, depending on which way you toss a coin!". Or.. "kill everyone and take the power of the artificially created life - or kill everyone and have pity on the artificially created life, and leave them to their death in a sinking city".
Yes, who needs books nowadays, when you can get philosophy injected into your blood- stream.
This will be interesting to see how they would turn this into a video game that's actually fun to play.
Preferably without butchering the Source material a la God of War Dante's Inferno.
I can see it now.
"Walden must stop the Hierarchy of the future from tampering with the past and changing the values of philosophy forever!Armed only with his wits and a crowbar this rugged anti-hero will rise to the occasion! "
@Drogmir: I'm not sure it's a good idea to come up with ideas like that. Before you know it there will be some action- game where the main character beats his enemies to death with a magical fork of indiscernible wisdom. And it will be high- brow entertainment with imaginative and extremely untraditional gameplay, because the character is based on a historical person struggling with a timeless dilemma. Mhm, mm.
Can't wait for Moby Dick, where you have to destroy Moby Dick's thousand-strong army of killer orcas, bloodthirsty dolphins and giant octopuses before reaching the great white whale itself, in a climactic confrontation that will play out exactly like the Irving boss fight in RE5, but with a limp.
@Antiterra: lol. And you'll get a multiple choice ending, where you can blow up the whale with a nuke and sell the remains on the japanese black market if you answer the quiz the right way.
If anyone wants to play games based on books that actually turned out pretty good in spite of everything, take a look at the Sherlock Holmes games that have come out lately. Pure adventure games, even if they're in third person. But they have the same style as Conan Doyle's stories. Not too serious, but with some harrowing scenes in between. .."entertaining", that's the word I was looking for, I think.
i am not too fond of this idea. i feel that the interwebz is creating a larger and larger gap of disconnect in people. i mean, look at facebook, myspace, messenger etc - a new form of communication without real interaction with the person. broadcast news via games? people will be far more disconnected to what the issue really is (poverty, war, human rights) and perhaps just be enjoying the game.
@roscoe: It cuts both ways though, doesn't it? I mean activism on a global scale is far more possible now than it ever has been, and that's largely down to the internet. People who've never met each other can work together, or even use the internet as a tool for arranging to meet each other. It's far more possible now to educate yourself about all kinds of things, not least important issues of current affairs pretty much everywhere on the planet. And as freedom to disseminate information increases, so do the opportunities for people whose voices would otherwise go unheard to put their point of view across.
