At this stage, hearing about Microsoft trying to compete with Steam through Games for Windows is like hearing Hugo Chavez announce that Venezuela will land a man on the moon with the power of communism. You know that it will fail and will be a laughing stock among an audience that is already hostile to Microsoft. You know that the methods and resources are completely wrong. All you can do is feel pity.
...I'm satisfied with Steam. I haven't even bothered with Games on Demand with my 360. Simply because I'm waiting for them to give me that 250GB HDD for a reasonable price.

Awesome, now you can buy PC games at or near their full MSRP without the physical media!
Seriously, has anybody bought one of these On Demand games on Xbox Live? There is no way that could have been a successful venture at the prices available...
It'll be interesting to see how Microsoft copes in the sector. They've never been known for competitive pricing and for the digital download market, you need to be willing to drop your price to compete against services like Steam and Impulse that have sales on the whole time.
@-MasterDex-: What's really going to make or break this service is the titles they offer. If they really, really wanted to make a splash, all they would have to do is pay Bungie and Epic to make GFWL versions of Halo 3 and Gears of War 2. Can you imagine the sales those two releases would generate? GFW would really explode onto the scene as a major player.
While they probably won't compete very hard with Steam, Impulse et. al. on price, what they could do, again, is titles. Take some of the big-name 360 releases and sell them as GFWL exclusives, successfully cutting their digital competitors off from major money-makers.
Let's face it, their success on the 360 front is from having total and complete control over the platform. With GFWL's built-in (and rather lightweight) DRM, they could use that to secure their platform and make big money in the little ecosystem they're setting up here.
@spiderweb1986: They don't, they don't even use it as currency on the 360 ones, makes me wish they were the same for the games themselves, i'd love to just take 50p out of my bank account to get some community games.
@spiderweb1986: the prices for the xbox 360 games are as high as they are because of retailer pressure.
Not that Steam is known for exceptional non-sale prices anyway. Games are still $50($60 for MW2!) the day they come out, probably because of retailer pressure.
@MooglesInMyFace: or in the case of GTA4, STILL $50 a year after release. I want to buy digitally but it's so much cheaper to do it later, especially if you wait a couple months past release.
@MooglesInMyFace: the prices for the xbox 360 games are as high as they are because of retailer pressure.
There isn't retailer pressure for PC games? Not as much, sure, because it's a smaller market, but retailers and publishers aren't going to let Steam sell Modern Warfare 2 for $30 at launch.
Not that Steam is known for exception non-sale prices anyway.
That's the thing - Steam runes sales regularly. Good sales. Occasionally great sales, like their Black Friday weekend.
Microsoft's idea of a "deal," as shown by the XBLA Deal of the Week, is cutting 400 Microsoft points from the price of a 1200 point game, or putting Halo 3 themes on sale for 37% off (yes, that really happened).
Yep. I refuse to buy brand new games on Steam because I've been burned too many times. 50% of SFIV like a month after it comes out? I can wait from now on.
You are correct that Steam will have an advantage because of their great sales. I'm not arguing there at all.
But, that said, if Microsoft is smart they'll get some good people and take a good look at the marketplace to compete with Valve. Perhaps we'll see some good sales for the PC service.
We'll have to wait and see. Unfortunately, as it stands right now the Games for Windows division at Microsoft is severely underfunded. It's like NASA, but worse.
@DorkimusPrime: Cases like that where the game never drops in price are, as far as I can tell, due to the publisher's laziness or greed.
I'm firmly convinced that Valve isn't run by idiots. All of their titles on Steam have dropped in list price as time goes on, to (mostly) reasonable levels. On the other hand, GTA4's current list price for a retail copy on Amazon is $30. If it was up to Valve, do you really think they'd be charging 66% more and expecting people to pay?
@MooglesInMyFace: No, it's because Activision is greedy. Or their digital sale department is lazy. Digital Pricing is quickly falling out of retailers control.
If that was the case you would think that Valve of all companies would price their digital games cheaper than retail, and with Left 4 Dead 2(aside from the 4 pack), that isn't the case.
The Orange Box is actually $3 less on Amazon.com with free shipping.
@spiderweb1986: I can't decide, honest. Direct2Drive is charging $30, and I ended up buying it on disc for $20 two weeks ago from Amazon. Since D2D's price is so much lower, I have to think it's Valve's problem, not TakeTwo/Rockstar.
@MooglesInMyFace: They do enough of that with big sales. They're not gonna sit there and undercut themselves every time a retailer has a sale. The publisher has the say in pricing - the distributor (Valve, Stardock, etc.) can only suggest a pricing. Some big titles get easily discounted, while others don't.
One look at Activision shows that they run away from sales like one would run away from burning napalm.
All I know is that I've heard in a few places (like here, from the developer of one of the games in the Black Frida...) is that Steam asks developers if they want to be part of the promotions and how deep the discount should be. I'd have to assume that the same is true for regular pricing.
The impression I've always had is that, aside from their own titles, Valve doesn't have any say in the pricing of other titles. If they're going to remain a neutral store front, they can't - otherwise, there'd be accusations of Valve pricing other games to give themselves a competitive advantage.
@Rainault: That and XBOX LIVE only has to worry about 1 specific type of hardware with 1 specific type of software configuration.
Heck there are games (both new and old) on Steam that dont run on every pc.
That's fantastic news! It's great to Microsoft taking care of the PC platform again. Hopefully this will continue to be a trend! #grandtheftautothelostanddamned
"hinting that the Xbox 360-exclusivity surrounding the episode is due to expire"
I'm still not holding out for the PS3 DLC... don't think it's coming soon. Even if it does come, I probably won't purchase it unless they release the Episodes from Liberty City on Disc. :| I'm not rebuying GTAIV again. Or a GTAIV Complete Edition is released on the PS3. #grandtheftautothelostanddamned
It's amusing how much it bothers people that the GTA IV DLC may not be entirely 360 exclusive. Exclusive DLC isn't in the best interest of gamers.
Anyway, hell yes if this turns out to be true. Hopefully GTA IV runs well on my hardware, seeing the time it's had to be patched and the fact that it sells for less than $20. #grandtheftautothelostanddamned
