Canada To Get Major Gaming Show?

So the organisers of the Leipzig Games Convention want to set up a show in North America. Popular vote says it's in the US, our vote was for sunny, sunny Mexico. Looks like we might both be wrong. Speaking with Gamekyo, the GC organisers have said they're leaning towards Canada as the destination for the show. Yes, Canada! This is far from confirmed, mind you, but the proximity of most major Canadian cities to the US and the country's big development scene certainly can't hurt its chances. More »

GC Organisers Want To Bring Leipzig To North America

Not the whole city, mind you. Doubt it'd clear customs. No, just the games convention, which after a reasonably successful 2008 showing in Germany want to continue recent expansion plans (there's an Asian Games Convention run by the same team) with a North American event. The Games Convention Über Update Post

The Leipzig Games Convention, the consumer showing of Europe's finest forthcoming video games (read: whatever SingStar version is planned for the Holidays), hits the Leipziger Messe from August 20 to August 24. And Kotaku was there! No, they're not there anymore, and yet they keep writing. Seriously, we can't stop. More »

LocoRoco 2 Trailer to Listen to

Why Gears of War 2 Won't Be At Leipzig

Leipzig's Games Convention will be Gears of War 2-less. While the game got top Microsoft billing at E3, Gears of War 2 won't be at GC. Explains Epic's Mark Rein: More »

    Leipzig Officially Moving To Köln

Those German insiders were right on the money: the Leipzig Games Convention is moving, and in the process getting a new name: Games Con. From 2009 the show - renamed because it lets them use the popular "GC" acronym even though the Leipzig team refused to relinquish the name "Games Convention" - will be held in the western city of Köln, which will not only increase the number of public visitors but also make it easier for industry types to get to the show. Which is all well and good, but "Leipzig" had a warm ring to it that the cold, teutonic "Köln Games Con" just can't match. More »

    GC Anchored to Leipzig

I've kinda grown fond of Leipzig. Sure there's not a whole bunch to do there and having the opportunity to check out Berlin, Munich or Frankfurt every night after spending the day covering the Games Convention would be Zuuupear Koole, but there's something to be said for a town dwarfed by the show it hosts. The Cars Of Games Convention

You might think that video game marketing is easy, but it's not. It's hard. Sisyphean sometimes. At this stage in the advertising game, marketeers really only have three tactics—scantily clad ladies, alternate reality games, and cars decorated with game logos. German marketing teams who didn't want to pull a creativity muscle clearly opted for the easiest two of the three, sometimes combining them for maximum impact. More »

    The Games Convention Hall Crawl

One of the more surprising aspects of Games Convention is the availability of alcohol, a rarity at a video game expo, BlizzCon not included. We've ridden into town with a drinking population of Leipzig-bound teens that was much higher than expected. Therefore, we've decided to try to see the sights and sound of Games Convention through the eyes of the German youth. By drinking. A lot. More »

    LittleBigPlanet Gets Better Acting

We had the opportunity to sit in on a LittleBigPlanet demo with Media Molecule creative director Mark Healey at Games Convention to get a quick update on how the PLAYSTATION 3 game is progressing. Unfortunately, the build on hand was from E3 '06 meaning there was little in the way of new features or content. Healey did tell us though that we can expect an improved version of the "create, play, share" software at Tokyo Game Show. More »

Scenes From The Games Convention Floor

Mark Wilson and I did our best Dumb Guy Who Doesn't Speak German impression at the GC Developers Conference, capitalizing on our convincing ignorance and weaseling our way in to the still under construction show floor for Games Convention proper. We were only able to secure complete pics of Sony's uberbooth before we were turned away by sour German security guardettes. "No photografik!" we were told, when our "avoid eye contact" and "shrug a lot" tactics failed. While we were unable to secure snaps of the Devil May Cry 4 dedicated space (without a Capcom logo in sight), it was the lack of Xbox 360 booth pics that broke our hearts. More »

Daglow Defines Next-Gen (Hint: It's Wii, WoW & Guitar Hero)

Don Daglow of Stormfront Studios spoke at today's GC Developers Conference on the subject of an oft-abused descriptor, rhetorically asking the question "What is next-gen?" Daglow's definition may differ from the conventional explanation, which is, essentially, the next iteration in a hardware cycle. The founder of Stormfront, whose resume spans at career at Intellivision as game director and one of the original producers at EA, tackled the definition in a number of divergent ways, declaring the hardcore contentious GameCube Turbo (aka Wii) a next-gen gaming system. We haven't gone hands-on with Halo 3: The Ride yet—it's still in private beta—but our estimation of development progress indicates we'll be testing the single and multiplayer portions within a day or two. If the artwork we've seen on the partially constructed version of Halo 3: The Ride shares any art assets with the game its promoting at the Leipzig Games Convention, you'll be taking Master Chief and pals through a fantastic German castle and rescuing a mysterious "Sparkle Princess." Team Fortress 2's Soldier Trailer At Leipzig

The kids from Valve just let us know that at the Leipzig Games Convention, they plan to show a new video short from Team Fortress 2, this time profiling the Soldier class, the rocket jumping, bazooka wielding character shown in multiple trailers. Hopefully, it will be as hilarious and successful at the previous preview clip for TF2's Heavy Weapons Guy. One also might hope that all nine character classes will get their own preview. Through The Glass Deveopment Studio

Visitors to the Leipzig Games Convention later this month will get a unique opportunity to watch the development of a game from start to finish, as a four-man development team is placed in a glass box and given four days to create a game. Dubbed The EA Experience The Glass Development Studio, visitors to the exhibit will be able to watch the team craft a game from the idea and planning stages all the way through to programming and graphic design.
"We only need four days to complete the process. This means that visitors will be able to watch the game slowly take shape before their eyes. GC visitors in the glass development studio will be also be able to subject the different versions of the game to their own quality testing," explained Boje Holtz of exDream.
Visitors will also be able to ask questions of the caged development monkeys and hopefully be able to feed them sugar cubes and give them chin scritches when they've been particularly good. Hit the jump for the exhibit announcement! More »

Games Convention To Showcase Art & History

The Games Convention i Leipzig isn't just a media event like many conventions you'd be likely to find stateside. It's a celebration of all things gaming, and no where will that be more evident this year than the GC ART exhibition area, where full exciting exhibitions await those eager to delve into the art and history behind our favorite hobby. The "public_play" exhibition will feature 500 square meters of space dedicated to the theme of "digital play and public spaces". Telespiele 1972-2007 is a massive exhibit showcasing gaming systems and computers from the first Pong machines to the PS3. Machinima will of course focus on creating art from video games and will include both films to watch as well as a chance to create their own Machinima with expert guidance on hand to answer questions. Finally Digital Beauty - 3D Character Design will challenge visitors to determine if a series of 20 images are real or virtual, as well as providing workshops on 3D character creation. Hit the jump for more information on one of the top ten reasons I will regret missing Leipzig. More »

    Germans Know Siren 2 Advertising

At the 2006 Games Convention in Leipzig, Germany, Sony shilled its in-house horror title Forbidden Siren 2 by handing out disposable cameras. These weren't simply PS2 branded junkers, you see. They were special. Convention attendees who had their shots developed were (probably) horrified they'd been snapped with all manner of spooky spectres and presented with a macabre message advertising the game's release.
