As much as I love Fallout 3, I'm not so sure it deserves the award for best writing. Doesn't mean much since I generally despise anyone who doesn't acknowledge No More Heroes in the category this year, but really the script and plot for Fallout 3 was really the only thing that didn't live up to the first two for me. They did a great job of fleshing out some of the staples of the Fallout history (especially with regards to Nuka-Cola, Brotherhood of Steel, and most importantly how the setting was affected on different parts of the map), but the actual script was lacking the dark hilarity and social references of the first two games and the plot made me want to ignore the story missions for a good bit of time.
@Lazureus: Well, the ending and the middle, where I accidentally shortcut the story, and all the NPC's started talking to me as if I had any idea what was going on. Even my own father assumed I knew exactly what he was talking about when he was all, "Doctor Li this", and "Project Purity that". Many an eyebrow was cocked; many a face was palmed. And here I am, still confused.
Awesome. I'm afraid the part of my brain usually devoted to attempting to respond intelligently (and/or add anything to a discussion) is currently drowning in giddiness overflowing from the 'happyhappyhappy' part of my brain.
@Komrade Kayce: Hero of Soviet Kotaku: Yawn...class in two and a half hours and I still have to finish typing a paper for it...how much I would give to be Tim Schafer...or at least...Tim Schafer's underpants...
To the people hating on Kojima, do know that he has done more than just Metal Gear. There's this great game called Snatcher, for one. Also, this neat little game on GBA called Boktai. Cool stuff.
Also, there's another series that people are very anxious for a sequel to, and that is Zone of the Enders. Great, flashy mech action.
Metal Gear may have been his main course over the years, but that doesn't mean the man can't do anything else. Also, if you're using Metal Gear as an excuse to why he doesn't deserve such an award, that's one hell of an excuse.
whoever nominated this guy is probably one of those twits that though the mgs series was a gem in story telling that couldn't be matched blah blah blah totally ignoring that the mgs series needed heavy editing and a focus away from cutscenes but instead on the stealth gameplay.
kojima is VERY overrated and there are a bunch of developers that deserve this before him like Tim Schaffer or Will Wright
@Santar: I wouldn't mind the amount of time watching if the story weren't so dumb.
I have MGS 4, and I hate the controls, the voice acting, and the story, but maybe I just don't "get it". Obviously I'm missing something if Kojima gets this much praise from the game industry.
@Born_To_Kill: If you feel that way why do you own it? surely you must've known before hand what the game would be like and that it is extremely story based.
@Pyrefly: A number of reasons. I'm new to the Playstation brand, I haven't owned one before, so I've never really played MGS, but I wanted to get quality games for the system and it had great reviews. Yes, they said it was heavy on the story, but I didn't think I'd mind, and I'd heard there was an option to press a button and get flashbacks to help explain plot points from previous games that came into play. Apparently, these "flashbacks" are still pictures that don't really help one understand anything.
I like the idea of the PMCs, I'll give them that, but there's just far too much going on, in my opinion. I think they should have kept it more simple.
@Born_To_Kill: "I'm new to the Playstation brand, I haven't owned one before, so I've never really played MGS"
That explains everything. MGS4 is very, very heavy on fan service, as it wraps up all the stories and plots from the first 3 games. It's the end of the Solid Snake saga. Coming in to MGS4 without having played the previous 3 was a grevious mistake. There's always the MGS database from the PSN that will help you connect the dots, but again, it's more fan service.
While MGS4 is an extraordinary experience, I don't think it stands well on its own if you're new to the series. For that matter the other games don't either. It's like watching Dexter season 3 episode 4 as your introduction to the show.
@Santar: That sounds like you didn't even play MGS4. Sure, many complain the balance of gameplay and cinematics was poor, especially as the game went on, but not everyone sees that as a bad thing. It's still a game, it's just not like everything else and maybe, just maybe it's not for everyone.
This talk of MGS4 not being a game/being a movie makes me sick, especially when people aren't obviously trolling. There is no rule book that says a game can't be what KojiPro produced. I think many gamers just need to have a more open mind.
@afrosheen: i was actually new to the series, ive never played an mgs game, but i was able to follow exactly what was going on and i could follow the story. maybe i'm just smart like that? yes, but also, i think it was because of the first time i heard of solid snake and saw him refferenced in flash movies and stuff. i didnt know what was going on, but for new people like me, it seemed to introduce people and tell me everything about them without sounding like the MGS database. not to sound like a fanboy or anything, but maybe he just wasnt trying to listen or find out what was going on because he may have had some poor expectations from 360 friends or whatever. maybe 360 game's dont go that in-depth with their stories? again, i dont know, i dont have one. but i think if he were to have payed attention more instead of skipping every single cutscene and missing out on most of it's greatness, something that i assume goes perfectly on games like gears of war and halo with "less circuitous" story lines, but will not work on a game like MGS4 or anything else made by a master like Hideo Kojima. had he looked into the story more instead of just going straight for the action(doing such is probably why he thought too much was going on at once) and losing most of the experience that is and was Metal Gear Solid 4.

Same here, though I'm in Canada and they've been known to hold back cool shows (usually they'll show their own since they have the rights though...)

So it's true, PC gaming is dead... (joking).

Though you can say that about most this gen games. people need to figure out how to make a good ending.

Yeah...I have to agree just a weeeeee bit.

I mean he doesn't really make games, they're more like movies with a little gaming thrown in for good messure.
I sure hope he'll go on to make some games you actually play, not just watch.
