Every story we read in class, she could find something that symbolized it. A broken coffee mug, a handful of balloons, a newborn baby - all symbolized death. I'd like to say that this Boo Mario cake symbolized triumph over death, but I'm afraid she'd find me on the internet and come to my apartment to chastise me. She was scary. This cake was actually submitted to me via GameCakes.com, but I've not had too much time to work on that site lately, and it is due for a good spam-comment cleaning. Still, this cake had to be seen. Excellent job, despite a little sloppy tongue-work - but who hasn't been guilty of that?

<![CDATA[ The Master Chief Cake ]]> Kotakuite Brandi sends in this snap of a Master Chief helmet cake made for her husband Aaron's birthday. The cake was made by a local caterer and reportedly looked so good they didn't want to eat it. Once they dug in though, it was discovered that Master Chief actually has Rice Krispie treats for brains. Given his rather bland personality, this should come as a surprise to no one.

Brandi sent this along in an email saying "We thought we'd send some pictures to you guys, if you
still like cake photos." Yes Brandi, we still like cake photos, but we like actual cake even more. Next time, please send cake. And no, this cake is not a lie. (Just thought I would get that in there before someone else did.)

<![CDATA[ The GTA San Andreas Cake ]]> This is definitely the coolest (and I think only) GTA cake I have ever seen. I'm particularly fond of the copious use of knick-knacks on the cake like the tiny cars and the fake money. I'm a sucker for an overly decorated cake that uses lots of little toys. The only thing that's missing is some tiny hookers and some blood. It's a well done cake, but despite the subject matter it is a bit on par with something you might see coming out of the local grocery store with the pre-rendered photographic icing. Although, the use of this cake for a four year old's birthday seems highly questionable. Oh, and that sound you hear is the head of certain Florida lawyer exploding.

<![CDATA[ The Banjo Kazooie Cake Makes My Teeth Hurt ]]> Kotakuite MrMessyHair (my new favorite handle) sends in this Banjo Kazooie cake lovingly crafted by hand by his sister for his birthday. It took a few minutes for my bleary mind to wrap itself around what it was seeing, but once it did it was awesome. It was kind of like looking at one of those pictures that is all dots until you look past it and then you see the clipper ship. Well done, especially for a hand made job, but all that sparkly sugar makes me want to go brush my teeth at least three times.

<![CDATA[ The Tetris Cake ]]> Kotakuite Ismet send in this snapshot from his friend's wedding in Singapore. The guy was such a huge Tetris fan, he actually bought a DS for the sole purpose of playing the new Tetris game. So, his sister and friends got together and had this Tetris cake for put together for his wedding. Apparently, the loose tetriminos you see on various parts of the cake actually had places to be inserted and the groom was required to "solve the puzzle" before finally cutting and distributing the cake. A truely fantastic tetris cake for a truly obsessive Tetris fan.

<![CDATA[ Martha Stewart Bakes a Wii Cake ]]>

Holy pineapple pound cake! Martha Stewart AND a Wii-shaped game cake. Fahey's head is going to explode! I hope this issue lands at my house before my birthday next week, I've got to leave it lying around as a subtle hint for my wife.

<![CDATA[ The Sonic the Hedgehog Cake ]]>

"What? Two game cakes in one day? How incredibly fortunate we all are!" These are probably the words that are running through your mind right this minute. Or at least some form of those words, possibly rearranged with some added expletives.

Apparently, a gal named Ana who is a friend of faithful Kotakuite Grap3fruitman made this Sonic cake in honor of Sonic's recent sixteenth anniversary. Well done, Ana. If more people made cakes for fictional video game character's anniversaries, the world would be a better place.

<![CDATA[ Another Mario-Themed Birthday Cake ]]> sparklemariocake.JPG

From reader Marco L. comes this sparkly, cake-icing-cookie confection (it sparkles!) that Marco's mom made for his 27th birthday. The icing (fondant, I assume) has a lovely marbled effect to it, and the bigger mushrooms around the base are cookies (and also painstakingly frosted). I'm always amazed by the nice game cakes readers send to us, and this is no exception. What a nice mom, and happy belated birthday Marco!

<![CDATA[ The Raving Rabbids Birthday Cake ]]>

Kotakuite Daniel P. sends in this great Raving Rabbids cake that his wife made for his son Damien's first birthday. The egg shape is very nice, but I wonder what the rabbid is made of? I'm going to go with fondant since it seems that's what all these things are usually done with, but then it is from Germany so who knows what amazing sugar concoctions they may have come up with. Well, whatever it is it looks great and the addition of the 1Up mushroom is a great touch. Happy Birthday, Damien, may you have many years of awesome mom made game cakes ahead of you.

<![CDATA[ Mario Cake Madness ]]>

University Student, Su-Yin, has put together the Mario cake to end all Mario cakes. Created for a friend's birthday, this masterpiece took three days to make. The Mario figure in the center is amazing and puts it head and shoulders above other cakes of it's ilk. I'll be emailing Su-Yin shortly to see if she can bake me something on the order of Silent Hill. An edible Pyramid Head would be awesome.

<![CDATA[ The Worms Game Cake ]]>

You might think that worms and cake are not something you'd want to put together, but Kotakuite Stuart W. has changed all that. For his 21st birthday, Stuart and his dear Mum put together this great cake based on his favorite game, Worms. Not only is it an awesome cake, but it has a pirate theme as well which always goes over big here at Kotaku tower. As far as game cakes go, this is definitely one of the most detailed ones we've seen in a while. Great job, Stuart, and your mom too. Oh, and Happy Birthday!

<![CDATA[ The WoW Alliance Cake ]]>

Two, count 'em TWO game cakes in one weekend! First we had the amazing Katamari cake and now this great WoW cake sporting the symbol of the virtuous Alliance. Pretty damn impressive if you ask me, especially the sculpting of the lion head and the two flanking creatures. In case you were wondering, everything on this cake is edible. The decorations are made with a sugar concoction called fondant which is extremely malleable, but only for a short period of time and then it hardens and that's all she wrote.

Ok, so you probably didn't need an explanation of fondant, but my point is, whoever made this did an incredible job given the materials they had to work with. Cooking class is now officially over.

<![CDATA[ Another Katamari Cake! ]]>

It's been a while since I posted a game cake, but this one definitely deserves it. This is probably the best representation of Katamari Damacy in cake form that I have yet seen. I was always fond of that star-like icing decoration. It reminds me of all those character cakes my Mom used to make me when I was a kid. It's a bit of an antiquated style, but in this case , it works perfectly.

As much as I like the cake though, I can't help being drawn to the Prince of the Cosmos figure. Did the cake maker make that? And if not... Where the hell can I get one?!

<![CDATA[ The Pac-Man Birthday Cake ]]>

Note: Thankfully, Luke finally came to his senses and lifted his ban on game cakes so that we can all continue to enjoy the delectable goodies.

When I first saw the subject line of the email claiming a Pac-Man cake, I was prepared to see a round cake with a wedge cut out if it, covered in sloppily done yellow icing. So, imagine my delight and finding this rather well done cake instead.

This cake was made for Nate on the occasion of his 18th birthday which happens to be today. So, Happy Birthday, Nate, you can consider this your birthday present from Kotaku. Don't say we never gave you anything.

<![CDATA[ Zelda Cake: Never Say Never ]]>

Proof that our writers (coughLukecough) should never say never in their posts.

Mike Fahey may have registered the GameCakes.Com website, that doesn't mean I'm going to stop posting the occasionally wicked-cool game-themed cake on the site.

Take for instance this delectable Hyrulian shield made by Karen for Justin on his 21st birthday. The cake took about ten hours to create and is Tres Leches Funfetti. I totally agree.

<![CDATA[ The NES Cake ]]>

It seems like the game cakes just keep on coming! Kotakuite Eric was leaving his old job for a shiny new one within the game industry and ex co-workers had this amazing NES cake made for his going away party.

The cake is yellow, the controller is two Hershey bars with nougat between them, connected to the cake by black licorice, and the whole thing is that hard-sugar frosting.

That hard-sugar frosting, I believe, is called fondant. it's a bitch to work with but it looks fancy and keeps your beautiful game cake from looking like this.

<![CDATA[ The Incredible Majora's Mask Cake ]]>

Kotakuite David sent in this snapshot of an amazing Majora's Mask cake that his girlfriend's mother made him for his birthday. I think this might be the best game cake since the awe inspiring Mario Wedding Cake. But what really puts this one in it's own category, is the story of the person who made it.

What is really remarkable about this cake is the fact that my girlfriend's mother lost the use of her left arm in a car accident over 20 years ago. Yet, she was still able to create such an incredible cake with only one arm.

Well needless to say, I'm impressed! I couldn't make a cake like that with two hands, much less one. Hats off to you, madame!
