Subject Matter: Borderlands targets the loot-hungry region of the brain, offering four classes with which to stalk the planet Pandora, shoot things and level up, acquiring cool guns, sweet armor and totally rad superpowers. As role-playing games go, it's shallow, but offers a constant stream of junk food gaming.
Value: Seeing all that Borderlands has to offer could take hundreds of hours. But the real value comes in the form of being able to play with friends on PlayStation Network or via splitscreen.

Unlike the latest Guitar Hero or Rock Band games, however, it's only good for one or two players, so the party element just isn't there. The innovative turntable-based gameplay makes it a breath of fresh air in the currently band-centric music genre, but it certainly isn't as social.

Value: At $49.99, Katamari Forever is the most expensive entry yet, a high price for a game that's largely rehashed content. But the content is vast and offers plenty to play. Sadly, there's no online component to help extend the experience.
Buy it for: the fan of quirky games who somehow missed every other Katamari Damacy game or the kid that longs to make snowballs in the summer time.

Value: The single-player only game has a sizable campaign, fantastic music and troubled controls and camera work. It's sort of a mixed bag.

It's the story of a roadie who gets transported to a heavy metal world where he must raise an army to free the oppressed inhabitants. There's plenty to do, though the odd mix of genres might be too much for some players.
Buy it for: Anyone with a strong affection for heavy metal music or sa twisted sense of humor.

Value: Left 4 Dead 2 is a multiplayer game with a massive amount of replayability, but requires cooperative gameplay and reliable friends to fully enjoy. There's very little here for the lone, single-player gamer, so make sure that Live subscription is all paid up.
Buy it for: the grown-up Xbox Live Gold subscriber who believes there's no "I" in team and may be disappointed with the body count in Modern Warfare 2 and Halo 3 ODST.

G.I. Joe is the code name for America's daring, highly trained special mission force. Its purpose, to defend human freedom against Cobra, a ruthless terrorist organization determined to rule the world. G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is the video game tie-in to the live-action movie version of the cartoon of the popular toy line. Its purpose? To give players the feeling of being a part of the highly trained special mission force as they witness the birth of their greatest enemy. It's a simple run-and-gun shooter featuring the movie's cast fighting alongside characters from the cartoon, with a 2-player local co-op feature that encourages you to team-up with your friends to fight the good fight.

Too bad the good fight isn't all that good.

Yo, Joe!: In case the subtle title threw you, this is a G.I. Joe video game, and even if it is based off of the movie, which takes an astounding amount of liberty with established series canon, it still has plenty to offer the G.I. Joe fan. Secret characters, profile cards, and a handful of unlockable public service announcements give the game an air of authenticity the movie lacks. I can even swallow the silly accelerator suit power-up, as it is accompanied by a stirring rendition of the original cartoon theme.

Teamwork: G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra was designed as a 2-player co-operative arcade-style shooter, and I found the game to be at its most enjoyable when played with a partner. The unpredictability of another human being makes one of the game's greatest failings - bland, repetitive gameplay - much more tolerable. Just make sure your partner is interesting, or you may find yourself falling asleep.

Mixing Things Up: Characters in G.I. Joe are split into three categories: Commando, Combat Soldiers, and Heavy Weapons. Developer Double Helix went great lengths to ensure that characters within each sub-group feels unique, with different main weapons and special powers that make the decision of who to bring into battle at your side an important decision. For example, Duke and Marlon Wayans are both Combat Soldiers. Duke's special power is a long range grenade toss, perfect for taking out large targets from afar, while the Wayans deploys drone tanks that act as additional guns at a much shorter range, which works really well when you are swarmed by enemy foot soldiers. The diversity doesn't save the game, but it at least demonstrates that the developers had some good ideas going into it.

Major Blah, Reporting For Duty: G.I. Joe is a top-secret combat force, specially trained to run around in circles holding down the fire button. This is what you'll be doing for several hours, with the monotony only dulled by the occasional vehicle segment or satellite-firing mini-game. At first I was charmed by the nostalgia of it all - it felt like I was playing the original 2D Contra successfully ported to 3D, but mission after mission slowly wore me down, until I started actually dozing off in the middle of combat, waking up with a start to see my guy standing there, having defeated his enemies by continuously dying and respawning, my finger locked on the fire button.

Seeing Is Half the Battle: You can't fight what you can't see, and in The Rise of Cobra, you often find yourself not seeing much. There is absolutely no camera control, and the fixed-camera positions included in the game leave much to be desired from a tactical standpoint. Enemies often fire at you from off-screen, and the camera doesn't bother switching if you need to backtrack, leaving you running towards yourself, desperately firing your weapon to stave off attacks from enemies you aren't even sure are there.

Same Base, Different Environment: The repetitive gameplay might have been salvaged by providing the player a wider variety of environments to romp around in. Sadly the Rise of Cobra only has three, and once you go inside a Cobra base, everything looks and feels exactly the same, making it much easier to fall asleep.

Voice "Acting": I'll give you an example of how bad the voice acting in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra can get. At one point the team is heading for the North Magnetic Pole, and Dennis Quaid's General Hawk has this to say: "Not the North Pole where Santa works." Simple, cheesy dialog, that makes perfect sense, unless you put the emphasis on the word 'works' instead of 'Santa'.' Now it sounds like the concept of Santa goes over really well at the true North Pole but just doesn't fly with the Magnetic Pole community. Santa works! The game's voice acting does not.

I wasn't really expecting all that much from G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, and it seems I was completely justified in doing so. If EA and Double Helix had shortened the game and tossed it up on the PlayStation Network or Xbox Live Arcade, perhaps adding online co-op in the process, this would have made for an entertaining download. As a full game, even one released at $10 below normal retail, it simply isn't worth it.

G.I. Joe regularly saves the world from terrorist threats that would see it reduced to rubble, but they couldn't save G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra from being as exciting as an un-altered public service announcement.

The good news? They're free via Home's Threads Store and also include outfits for Duke and The Baroness. Make it snappy, wannabe Joes, as these are available to Home residents for a limited time.

Of course, that's not the only G.I. Joe advertising you'll see, as the Home Theater will add "an exclusive video welcome from stars Sienna Miller and Rachel Nichols as well as a trailer introduction from director Stephen Sommers." Sundry clips and mini-games will also satisfy your G.I. Joe cravings. Images of those costumes are after this.

As a game, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra hasn't been all that impressive. I got my hands on the Contra-fied shooter at E3 2009, and the most impressive feature of the game is still the extras they are throwing in for the fans. While the bio cards and concept art are nice, the key draw here is clearly the "Knowing is Half the Battle" series of public service announcements. Of course, those can not only be seen on YouTube, but fans have since made them so much better.

What Is It?
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is EA's game adaptation of the film adaptation of the cartoon adaptation of the 80's update to a military doll for boys. It's a scrolling 3D shoot-em up featuring drop-in anytime co-operative multiplayer starring a nicely rounded cast of characters from the film, comics, and toy line.

What We Saw
I played through several levels co-operatively with an EA operative. I played as Duke, while my guide played as red-headed crossbow maven Scarlet.

How Far Along Is It?
The movie is due out on August 7th, and the game needs to be out by then as well, so it's pretty far along.

What Needs Improvement?
Auto-Targeting: You hold down the fire button, and you automatically lock onto the nearest target and fire a constant stream of bullets at them. Once your target is dead, you automatically switch to the next closest enemy or destructible object. You can swap targets, of course, but for the most part you simply dodge the enemy while your magic, never-ending ammo supply takes them out. Some might say it hearkens back to arcade games of old. Others would say it's a boring mechanic that lacks any sort of challenge. I fall into the latter category.

Goofy Animation: The auto-targeting system makes trouble for your character's animation, as they twist about to face whatever you are targeting, even if you've moved past a destructible object you've given up on. It just doesn't feel natural, and it looks completely ridiculous.

Melee Misses: The game features melee attacks, but it really isn't the type of title where they work well. Perhaps it was just the character I was playing, but the clumsy punches I threw mostly failed to land, and when they did they didn't feel as if they were doing much. Holding down the melee button charges an attack that can send enemies flying, but trying that in the middle of a firefight got me killed more than a couple times.

What Should Stay The Same?
Fan Service: It's obvious that the developers have a strong understanding of the history of the franchise, and they're cramming the game chock full of G.I. Joe goodness. It might not be enough to excuse the game play as it stands, but it could at least make the game worthwhile to collectors and enthusiasts.

Final Thoughts
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is essentially a clumsy 3D Contra game with G.I. Joe characters, right down to the destructible objects that drop medals when you shot them. I'd daresay that if you brought someone to the game without telling them what it was, covering up the story references, they'd assume that's exactly what this was. I'm not sure what I would want out of a G.I. Joe video game, but I'm pretty sure this isn't quite it.

As Crecente reported last month, the Nintendo DS version of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is a top-down action game with role-playing elements in which the player takes one control of one character at a time, running about shooting at things and gaining levels as they go.

Between this and its console big brother, I'm honestly a bit more taken with this format, as simplistic as it looks. It reminds me of the old PC game a bit, and the allure of G.I. Joe is at least 80% nostalgia factor at this point anyway.

Noting the checkered history of movies made into games (which is still much, much better than games made into movies) the AP talked to four different studios about why they think this year's crop of movie-games won't repeat 2008's largely unremarkable quality.

Joby Otero of Luxoflux, which is developing "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," thinks somehow that studios "get it" more this year than they did last year, which gave us Iron Man, Kung Fu Panda and other check-cashing projects.

"I think Hollywood is communicating with the games industry on a different level now. There's a recognition that a game's quality can impact the overall franchise. I think part of the reason is that more of the key creative decision makers grew up as gamers themselves. There's an understanding of how wrong these things can go."

Jason Enos of Electronic Arts, which is handling G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (can we please be done with the "Rise of" subtitles?) sees his game as an extension to the movie, not its adjunct.

We pick up where the movie ends. We tell a genuine story that's exclusive to the game but ties in key plot points in the film. That also allows us to leverage the larger 'G.I. Joe' universe - characters, vehicles, things you're not going to see in the film but you'll get in the game.

Call me cynical, but no one is asking or answering the essential question of why these games should be done in the first place. What is their point, what is their value proposition to me as a gamer? Sure, films and games may not be mutually exclusive formats; what makes them mutually inclusive?

Don't bother coming up with a creative answer, because we already know it: Money. Pure color-by-numbers money-making strategy.

Summer Movie Video Games Seek to Terminate Stigma [AP hosted by Google]

The shots depict Snake Eyes doing various things, because Snake Eyes is pretty much G.I. Joe's main draw. The rest of the original toy characters just looked like the extended cast of The Village People, after all. Didn't stop me from buying most of them as a kid, but I was young and stupid then, instead of the older stupid guy I am now. Not so stupid, however, as to let EA, the filmmakers, or anyone else tell me the robot in the screenshot above is a Battle Android Trooper. This is a Battle Android Trooper. I don't know what the hell that generic piece of trash up there is supposed to be.
