Huh? Didn't the son decide for himself to enlist? How did the mom put herself in her position? Unless Gretchen Carlson is saying she could never put herself in the position of having a son. That woman (Gretchen), much like that show, much like that network, makes me sick.

It could have been worse... the host's trolling of the mother didn't quite pan out. The rumors of them consulting actual insurgents never surfaced either. They totally went for the historical angle.

Funny true story, during the election a study actually found fox to be the most, I shit you not, fair and balanced news station in regards to the election and its coverage. By a lot. We watched an entire college class dissolve into angsty campus liberal rage when we presented it in a political science course.

While I often openly disagree with you on this site, I'll agree with you here. I'm not a big fan of Fox News, but beings that I don't hate them, I often get attacked on this site and others. They're clearly a more right/conservative station, no question, and honestly, that's ok. Any idiot can tell that most major news organizations (NBC/CBS/ABC/NYT/etc) tend to be more liberal/left. I just think it's funny when people bitch about Fox News, but think the New York Times or NBC is somehow a more legitimate source of news. I actually watch NBC news most nights. I don't hate Obama, but I certainly don't think he's perfect. You'd never know that by watching NBC news. In several months of nightly coverage, I've never seen a negative story about him yet.

@bobtheduck: Yeah, I think you're right. Right/left leaning news honestly doesn't bother me, mostly because I'm well-informed enough to recognize which is which and I watch both so I get both sides. The only thing that occasionally bothers me is when the editorializing goes too far. MSNBC has gotten REALLY bad about this. Keith Olbermann and Rachel Maddow are probably the worse offenders, often basing their entire program around attacking/disproving some pro-conservative issue, but Sean Hannity can get pretty bad too. The only thing I respect about Hannity is that he doesn't pretend to be anything other than a right wing nutjob. Keith and Rachel actually pretend to be objective when in fact they are completely loony leftists. I personally don't like anyone who's too far one way or the other, I think it clouds your ability to be objective and neither side can be right on every issue.

@subnet6: Fox actually does a pretty good job of getting opposing viewpoints, even if at the end of the day their hosts disagree. I've also noticed that their actual news segments tend to be pretty bi-partisan. Their opinion pieces and round tables, while conservative at heart, are also just that - opinion pieces and round table discussions. And like you said, even their most extreme of right wing neo-cons don't pretend to be anything else but that.

It is funny how 1 conservative news network gets flamed to death for being, well, conservative. And yet it's the only major network with that viewpoint, with the other networks siding with a decidedly more leftist slant.

I've found that the people who flame it the hardest tend to be younger, particularly college age students who are confident enough to be loud about their disapproval, but still inexperienced enough that they say what they're taught to say (haven't had time to form coherent opinions of their own) and as one comment above mentions, the fox-hate is absolutely enormous on college campuses (campi?). I've also found that most of the ardent fox-haters haven't really watched it much.

You're right though, their "straight news" is pretty reasonable, unfortunately, that's not where they get their reputation.

@subnet6: ABC networks are liberal?! We're talking about a company owned by Disney, who donated millions to the bush administration during BOTH elections. Not to mention they were always pretty buddy buddy with Jeb Bush, and most of all they censored Kucinich nonstop during the last election.

@Cadaverine: I'm not judging the entire network so much as the news division. But yes, ABC news leans left. They're not BAD, in fact, they are probably the closest to center of the big 3. And even though they lean left, I would still describe their news coverage as "fair". Peter Jennings admitted he was a life-long liberal and you could tell by how he covered the news. That's fine, like I said, I dont have a problem with it, but c'mon, lets be honest. Even their Sunday show (the heart of a networks political coverage) is anchored by George Stephanopolis (an active Democrat, even worked in the Clinton administration and still has heavy democratic ties), who is also their chief Washington correspondent so their political news has a tendency to be presented from the left as well. Again, like I said, not a problem. You just have to educate yourself so you recognize it.

@subnet6: Oh, yeah, and dont even get me started on Barbara Walters, who is way left. She was the main influence on 20/20, ABCs evening news magazine and now she has infiltrated ABCs daytime programming with the View, which is possibly the most liberal broadcast on daytime TV. They have ONE conservative voice on the show (Elizabeth Hasslebeck?) and she's a nobody who generally only embarrasses conservatives. If I was a conspiracy theorist (I'm not) I would say they put her on simply to make conservatives look bad, while being able to claim "balance", much the way Fox News uses people like Alan Combs, who is a liberal on the Hannity show, a frequent commentator on O'Reilly and others and is a total tool. Sure, he's a liberal voice on Fox who gets a lot of air time in the name of "balance", but he's not a good one.
