This game looks so Amazing. I just love the art direction and amount of detail in the game world. I'm just hope I'm able to focus on the story long enough before I get addicted to multiplayer.
I think most people saying this "looks amazing" aren't talking specifically about graphical fidelity here but rather just how immersive the experience seems.
Everything from the crowds of civilians (who scatter and act as civvie's probably would) to the intense pace, sound effects and level design - everything about this game seems to be an improvement on MW1 which is no simple feat.
I personally think it looks astounding, no video game to date has made me feel this close to being "in the game" and that's just from having seen the trailer.
If you don't think that this "looks amazing" then chances are you weren't a huge fan of the first MW and/or FPS games in general. I'd be very surprised to see anyone who's played a lot of FPS games say they're not impressed by this.
@Toasticus: MW1 was just fine. Same combat mechanics, but after you round 3 or 4 corners you're going to come across something of interest.
Aside from the fancy graphics, nothing in that level stood out to me whatsoever. Just an endless slum crawl, ducking through shacks and shooting meaningless guys + the occasional mutt.
@ForkInSocket: Be reasonable now. 8 minutes is hardly fair game for the label "endless". In terms of layout it looks like a less linear take on the third level from MW1 where you drop in via heli. What makes these guys more meaningless than the ones you kill in MW1?
@Toasticus: I took liberties. But 8 minutes is lengthy.
The heli drop-in level in MW1, IIRC, had you and your squad blowing doors, storming a variety of different building types, shooting soldiers on rooftops with RPG's, cars exploding, armed trucks, etc.
It's been a while, but I don't think it compares.
For the record, I think MW2 will likely be a great game judging from the other clips out there. But if the majority of the levels are as lifeless as this one, then the predecessor is superior in my book.
@ForkInSocket: I'm not sure lifeless is the right word to describe the level shown here. Generic maybe, but how can you call it lifeless? There was *so* much going on...
And I'm 100% sure there will be plenty of door-blowing, RPG'ing and cars exploding - as Toasticus said 8 minutes of footage isn't enough to make the kind of assumptions you are.
I however think that if every 8 minutes of this game is as good if not better than the footage shown here, I'll be most impressed.
@ForkInSocket: This portion of MW2 does look to be lighter on fancy scripted events but it's important to remember that Infinity Ward intentionally balances out the game so that frenzied action-movie sequences are interspersed between periods of more conventional FPS action, keeping the general intensity on the path of a slightly upward-angled sine wave. This seems to be one of those more subdued sequences, one of the valleys in terms of gameplay intensity.
It's also important to remember that this isn't a piece of officially released media. It's a low-resolution clip from a presentation, and hard to say how early on in the campaign it's from. It also looks like it's on easy mode, and the person playing didn't really do much to sell any sense of urgency. I'm far from claiming that MW2 will for sure exceed or even meet the quality of campaign that MW1 had, but at the same time I don't see this video as any reason to believe otherwise either.
Either way, I've mostly just been pushing you for some evidence that you aren't just hating on something popular and it seems like you have some reasoning behind your opinions. So, nothing stopping us from just agreeing to disagree about this particular video.
I love playing these games, but watching someone else play them just makes it look ridiculous. I see they are also doing the Chernobyl level with this one: You verses a ton of combat incompetent dudes... who still empty a fully automatic stream of bullets into your corpse.
@DigitalHero: I've done every mission in COD4 except for Mile High Club and whatever the ferris wheel level is called on Veteran. I tried a few times but I just quit because it just wasn't fun to play.
The constant stream of bullets into your already dead body was just one of those last straw things.
Overall though, I don't think any dev behind the COD games has achieved a decent really hard mode. If you look at it this way, perhaps I'm just reiterating what you already know but, enemy AI always knows where you are, even in lower difficulty levels. Its a computer. There are just checks in place to make it look like the computer doesn't know where you are. Veteran mode just flat out turns those checks off and the game turns into trial and error and memorizing where each enemy is. On the Chernobyl level I noticed this when I tried hiding in a back corridor until the friendly chopper arrived. The second wave of enemies who spawn after the checkpoint immediately knew where I was and a stream of bullets constantly flew over head and hit nothing but the wall kitty corner from me. Thats where the fun-ness dissolved from the campaign and the veils fell making it apparent it was a game run by a computer. I know my initial post wasn't about Veteran mode, but since you mentioned it I thought I'd go off. Was it that I called the NPCs "combat incompetent" that led you to assume I would have that hard of a time on Veteran mode?
@PhatsMahoney: I know that you hadn't mentioned this, but Call of Duty 4 had a respawn system in place for enemies. The sooner you pressed forward in the level, the less enemies you had to worry about. Every previous CoD game had a finite number of enemies, which is why they were much easier on harder difficulties than 4 (not to mention they didn't lay into you with an endless clip). From what I understand, and what Robert Bowling has said, Modern Warfare 2 will go back to the old ways of enemy spawning. I hope that gives you some form of comfort.
@TrIp13G: When I read that somewhere (probably here) a while ago I was indeed comforted. I think that's why the Chernobyl level sucked so hard on Veteran. Because there was no place to advance to to cut off the enemy spawn, there was just a constant stream of dudes from that building.
Lighting, animations and locations look great. The gameplay looks like more of the same old CoD-style which is probably still ok because of the very intense atmosphere and pacing but it looks a bit dated already.
Because of Kotick and Activisions' pricing strategy I will definately hold out until I get either a cheap used copy or a budget version. Call me naive but I am not going to take their BS. Most people who say that now will end up buying it within the first week but I mean it.
I know that it's not Infinity Wards' fault but I guess they have to find a more gamer friendly publisher, if they don't want to suffer from the fallout caused by consumer rage.
@TheOddOneDies: I don't think the consumer reaction is going to hurt any Activision-published games to a significant degree. It may hurt their ability to hire on new talent once word spreads through the industry of their strongly anti-creative corporate attitude, however. I wonder if we will soon be hearing from Activision Spouse.
@Toasticus: Well, hope dies last. They said that MW2 is expected to sell 11 million copies within the first two months. I'd be glad if enough people would see the fact that supporting Activisions price hike most likely means supporting a general industry-wide price hike. If it were only 9 million copies instead of 11, that would be at least a little signal for all those publishers that delayed their AAA-titles because of MW2.
@TheOddOneDies: I hadn't heard about a price hike for MW2. It seems to be going for standard price in the USA, at least. Has Activision inflated prices elsewhere?
@(Zombie) Teliko, TheOddOneDies: Thanks, I didn't know about that. Activision will be paying close attention to how those sales are affected by the hike, so refusing to buy at full price could certainly help send them a message.
Later levels in Mw1 had you in attack planes, avoiding(or not avoiding) nuclear explosions, and crawling around in ghillie suits trying to snipe amongst dozens of enemy troops.
@ForkInSocket:
They set these demos on the easiest difficulty so that they can get through the levels as quickly as possible.
These games, when set to the hardest difficulty, are extremely intense and aren't "dull" in the least. Every bullet counts. It's impossible to just run and gun like the guy in the video was doing.
@ForkInSocket: You sure have it in for this game don't you? Its one thing to state your opinion its another to bash the game without any concrete reasoning.
I love my shooters. I've played every CoD game, and I thoroughly enjoyed CoD, CoD2, and CoD4. I've been looking forward to this sequel since it was announced. I was in two minds about watching this video, but my curiosity got the better of me.
I'm so glad that I did decide to watch this vid, as it made me realise that my expectations were way too high. To me, it looks to be too similar an experience to CoD4.
I think I'll skip single player (for the first time in any game I've played), and jump straight into online multiplayer, which will definitely be epic.
@-MasterDex-: Im with you. Im not sure why this game gets so much hate. I know its on the easier side of gaming but that just makes it so much more fun.
@Yossarian: Well i mean in a multi player side. With aim assist and low recoil. Those type of things. In a single player POV then yeah i would hope the most difficult settings arent easy :P
@Shaban12si: No aim assist on the PC and there's nothing to say that recoil won't be accurate enough when actually playing the game, of course if it isn't, there's always the mod community on the PC to fix things for competitive play...as for the console gamers, I guess they'd have to hope for a fix.
