I was surprised when I opened my PS3 and found that there was no HD cable in the box (and a good HDMI cable can be quite pricy). I was also dissapointed to find that Sony had gotten rid of their memory card slot and backwards compatability with the PS2.

Honestly, both consoles are probably closer to the same price than either company would admit. PS3 has Blu Ray -- a format which is still rediculously expensive. 360 has Netflix. Both can be easily set up to just stream content off of the PC.

I also find that XBox Live is a much nicer experience overall than the PS3's online service, but I can't say online multiplayer has been my big thing either way.

I have both systems. Both have their pros and cons. I didn't touch the PS3 as much as the 360 for the last year, but that has started to change and I find myself using both equally with no real preference.

I do admit though, Microsoft should never have been able to get the foothold on the market that it has today. Sony really ropped the ball. If the 360 hadn't been prone to RRODs, it would have been even worse.

theres also the fact that the xbox 360 requires a play and charge kit, and the ps3 doesn't. it comes with a usb cable out of the box. unless you want to use double A batteries you're screwed into buying the play and charge kit for 20 bucks.

The ultimate resolution to this war is the mythical All-In-Wonder game box!

Give it a generation or two for the Big 3 to finish poo-fling. The pissing war could end civilly and profitably if they finally crossed streams and went it for the reacharound.

Prediction 2012: A Sony manufactured piece of hardware with a Microsoft developed OS and online social network that plays software designed using Nintendo's innovative control schemes and beloved first party licenses.

With all three company's playing to their strengths in a common effort to enthrall all of gamedom, what more could we ask for? A Steam enabled console based online marketplace of course!!

A pipe dream perhaps, but wouldn't it be fantastic!

I'm going to say this and then go, because some of us are writing full essays lol...

Sony is in full desperation mode. The economy is in the shitter and they're behind the 8ball. If there's one thing I would hope is that these developers are reading these comments. Too many times these people are pulling their hair out trying to figure out what to sell to us. Well...if you read some of these posts, we're making it pretty damn clear. Unfortunately...I fear most aren't listening.

Nintendo has gone on record more than once to say they care and are listening to the core gamer just as an example. I don't believe them. Personally, I'd want to see Nintendo do away with friend codes and make it easier for me to invite friends to games and see friends online without being in-game. I want real voice chat support. Fuck Wii Speak. why can't I get headset support

I want m/kb support on PS3. Period. Across the board. It's a disgrace that we're even still debating this. Resistance 2 should have had it and Insomniac lost credibility in my book because they refused to support it not to mention a lot of other developers.

360 should have M/kb support. It should also have a 2GB limit for Live Arcade games and it should have the option to install any 2.5in HDD same as the PS3.

If I had these options, Id be so much happier and I'd be spending even more money I don't have.

It's fine of them to preach to the choir but your average Joe doesn't make his purchase based on marketing tables. He looks at what is cheaper and what fits him. "Earlier modles" of 360 means nothing to someone choosing now, and ought not be on the table at all for that. Wi-Fi is an expensive add-on in the 360, but there are aftermarket solutions on the cheap, and there is an included ethernet cord in case you do not need Wi-Fi. Blu-Ray may not mean anything to someone with an HDTV and surely doesn't if they don't have an HDTV. And I was just thinking, yesterday, that there are barely any games that use the BD-ROM to its fullest. I looked at my copies of Guitar Hero and Rock Band and knew that they played almost identically on the 360 (save for interface differences and read speeds). Sure, my copies of LittleBigPlanet and Metal Gear Solid 4 may have been designed around the PS3's innards, but with most games being multiplatform today, the difference Sony claimed BD would make has largely diminished.

I'm not knocking on the PS3-I have one, and I love it to death. But I think there is a lot of discussion and information giving that should be done for a fair comparison, and it is not happening with this chart.

Love the "Limited" on the Wii internet, as they realized they couldn't just put "Free" without making sure to take a dig.

Also, the $100 Wi-Fi column is dishonest at best. The 360 can still go online WITHOUT wifi, meaning that the $100 cost is completely optional.

This is 100% fail.

It's also amsuing to see Sony taking a page from Sega's book, because the last time Sony went back to it's late 80's, early 90's style of marketing and poo flinging was to take out ads and send Sony post cards letting them know how 'sorry' they were during the winter of 2001 when the PS2 had massive supply shortages and Sega had released something akin to 7 AAA titles.

Of course Sega was awash in red ink, getting it's teeth kicked in by the PS2 and imploded when SOJ's prez died a few months later, but hey...

And yet the Wii and 360 are consistently outselling the PS3 in both Europe and America.

Comparing the 80GB PS3 with the 360 Arcade is just silly. Everyone knows the PRO is the version to buy. The arcade is there to compete with the Wii, not the PS3.

I'm sorry, but I like having the option of paying for an online service I don't use, buying a hard drive for downloads I wont buy, and a Wi-Fi connection to a wireless AP I don't have.

The PS3 has all of this out of the box, but the price reflects that. Oh, and no HDMI on earlier 360, which is true, and screwed a few early adopters, but do they mention how early PS3s didn't have the WIFI adapter, and no ability to add it?

Besides all of the features, the Wii is king of casual, no matter how many millions of subscribers XBL has or how better the PS3 is at rendering.

If they didnt have backwards compatibilty, you could easily pick one up, seeing as if xbox will not be accepted in Gamestops and im sure other video game stores soon. Plus the backwards compatibilty is limited. Im sure the people that buy a gaming system, the same ones people say don't give a crap about all the add on features, don't give the same crap about backwards compatibility.

Yes, there are xbox games that I play.
Played Psychonauts and Jade Empire recently and also playing now KOTOR 2.
I own a 60GB PS3 with backwards support so now I can play FFXII and Persona, but compatibility was stripped from the PS3 a while ago from new systems.
So, yes, I give a crap about BW compatibility as Im sure several others do also.

@ortega602086: Honestly, im sure if people cared about this issue, then Xbox and items would still be worth taking in at Gamestops. People want PS3 to have backwards combatibility because 1) Games are still being made for ps2
2) These games are actually popular to some extent amongst gamers.
3) Ps2's catalogue is huge

I havent seen backwards compatibility as an argument to buy a 360 because it definately isnt convincing. I can understand being mad PS took it away, but Xbox having it should hardly be a factor in getting the system. Truth be told for casual gamers the graph isnt right. For hardcore gamers the graph is true. Because eventually you will continue to pay more for Xbox as then PS3, period. The only valid argument then would be Xbox360's game catalogue which atm is better. But 2009 does look promising for PS3.

@ImSoFresh: I mentioned "they are missing BW compatibility" because Sony ommited that part in their chart. That feature may not be that crucial for deciding between a 360 or a PS3, but at least the xbox 360 gives you an option to play your own original xbox games, and it is better IMO to replay those games form time to time than rushing to gamestop and sell each one for $3. If you sold your PS2 to get a PS3 and decided to play Persona 4?
And besides, paying more for the xbox may or may not be all true. You dont neccessarily need the wi fi to get online, yes you pay $50 for live! service, thats about $4.20 a month, $1 per week of use, is that really that expensive for an easy to use service?
Blu ray gaming. Whats the use of all the capacity of the Blu ray if you still have to install the game in the console? Of my 60GB HDD I have only 30GB left and I dont have any downloaded videos or demos, just the game installs.
Of course I love Blu ray movies, I have three times more movies than games and the PS3 fortunately has a way to up to date the firmware for the BD player.
For casual gamers the graph should be easy to read; hardcore gamers already have one of those consoles and know how to interpret those numbers.

Is there corporate spin to this? Yes. Whenever any company releases anything that has to do with another company its corporate spin. But I think people on here are looking at too seriously, yeah we know all this and what we individually need and use from each system. But the type of person this would be geared to isn't the type of person thats gonna be here on Kotaku. MS's strategy to take advantage of the majority that find it easier to pay for it piece by piece instead of saving up and getting it all at once. Sony's game is to show you that you get more now and is meant to try to educate and appeal to those that research before they buy. So since we know this release isn't meant for us. Lets all get along and play nice.
