If it means I can share save-game files with a friend, I'm all for it. When he comes over with a fighting game of his, and half the characters are locked, it's kind of annoying. It'd be nice to just transfer the file and have all the characters on my system too.
HOLY SHIT.
This is exactly what I needed. I'm getting my 60GB repaired by other means, and once it comes back I would have had to do some crazy backup procedure to get all my content on one machine with the big hard drive.
Now all I have to do is some crazy transfer procedure! Awesome.
@BallPtPenTheif: Yes I would love to be able to play PSP games on my PS3 as I don't own a PSP.
HOWEVER... it would kind of make PSP (the actual hardware) less useful from a business stand point.. so I can kinda understand if Sony doesn't want to go that far. (Do correct me if I'm wrong)
@paukkuii: Portability is the hardware's biggest asset. Sometimes my wife watches dumb things and I want to play games. This is where remote play and PSP games come in handy.
The data transfer is a step to a right direction but come on the copy protection saves should have been linked to the PSN ID.
Oh I guess the copy protected saves will not transfer over using the new data transfer. The info according from EU Playstation blog site [blog.eu.playstation.com] said so.
@Neko_Tech: What the heck is the point if the copy "protected" saves don't transfer? I really hope the game companies get over this new addiction soon. It's ridiculous.
That said the PSP Mini thing is good news. It always annoys me when companies segregate portable and console games. Nintendo is especially guilty of this lately, considering there easily could have been Gameboy classics on the Wii Virtual console.
@Zunnoab: If you're going to blame it one someone then point the fingers on those trophy mongers and Sony. Sony is the one who structured how the system works and didn't think of what if scenarios. Sony can change the way copy protection save works but probably requires the other devs to release a patch which requires money to do so and we all know that they wouldn't do it.
@Honest Pizza: I feel your pain friend. I had my PS3 (60GB) died of YLOD and sent it to a 3rd party repair so I can my own system back to get my game saves backed up for my PS3 Slim. Of course I lost all of my copy protected game saves in the process.
I didn't play any of my games like NGS2/Demon Souls/Uncharted 2 and other games that had copy protection for over a month because I had to wait for my PS3 back from repair (system backup and restore on the Slim) or otherwise I had to start from scratch after I do system restore. Let me say that on those games I spent countless hours on that I couldn't transfer over, I had lost interests on ever playing it again.
@Neko_Tech: It's not just that. The Wii, with no such trophy/achievement system, has many games with arbitrarily locked saves too. The simple solution to the trophy issue is to only grant trophies when playing with the linked PSN account. Obviously that doesn't work for older games though.
@Matthew Weflen:
Blast Off! and Echoes are two phenomenal games by Halfbrick Studios that only cost $2.99 a piece. I love the heck out of both of them.
Any word on fixing the syncing problems with PS3 Slims? Because ever since I updated my PS3 to 3.10 it's always been a crapshoot every time I start up the console whether or not the controller feels like syncing (and this even AFTER I turn on the PS3 using the controller, so it's already synced!)
@RockyRan: Same here. Slim 120 gig owner, legit controller and problems since 3.1o update. My Bravia Sync is also not working, so I can't use my TV remote to navigate XMB... which was one of the reasons why I got the slim... Sony is being coy about the problems, just have a look at the official message boards.
@FP_slomo788: I only have one controller and no BR remotes, so I can't say anything from experience. From the looks of it, though, the PS3 is having troubles syncing with Blu-ray Remotes, Dualshocks (not too sure about SIXAXIS's) even Bravia TVs. From what I've read it affects mostly Slim owners (certainly affects my Slim <_<) but has even affected the odd player or two with a Phat.
@lephunk: As I suggested above, Echoes and Blast Off! are two games by Halfbrick Studios that I've probably been enjoying a little too much. They're both great and only cost a paltry $2.99 a piece.
If they can emulate a psp, they can emulate a ps2. My ps2 died but I have a dozen or so games leftover and I never did beat FFXII... Just do it already!
@License_to_iLL: That would seem logical, although if we are to believe Sony (a stretch, I recognize) there are some custom hardware pieces to the PS2 that are not easily emulated by software. That said, why they can not release a software PS2 emulator that does not handle a percentage of games is beyond me.
@Shfifty5: How dare you insinuate that Sony is not releasing compatibility for financial reasons. I am so insulted. [I have just taken off my mock white glove and smacked it against your virtual face.] Good day, sir.
So I want to check on this. Does this mean I can buy PSP minis games on my Playstation 3 and play them on my Playstation 3 even if I don't own any sort of PSP?
"The update also adds PS3 data transfer functionality, giving those upgrading to a newer model the ability to connect two consoles via a LAN cable and swap data, which would have been incredibly handy for me four months ago."
I'm right there with ya. It probably will still keep me from copying copy-protected games, and I needed a new external hard drive anyway, but still...
@the7k: Games from the PS-Store can already be downloaded on another PS3. Most can be downloaded and played on up to five systems. With Warhawk and Wipeout, you can play on one system per 24hr period. AFAIK, all others have no such restriction. Anyway, according to the PlayStation Blog, this would also transfer copy-protected movies purchased from the PS-Store, though it's not clear if it would copy savedata that's copy protected.
@DVD_Sandwich: Yeah, I don't care about stuff that can be downloaded from the network again - I care about the stuff that can't be downloaded from the network.
Street Fighter IV save file.
Demon's Souls save file.
Among others.
When can I play PSP games on the PS3? I want to play FF: Dissidia, GoW: Chains of Olympus, and the new Metal Gear...but I don't really want a PSP (home console price for a handheld? no thanks).
@-MasterDex-: I was alluding to the $249.99 (plus tax) PSPgo, but I have considered (though not strongly enough to hunt for) a used 2 or 3k unit. It may all come down to that new Metal Gear...
@Kitradu: That $249.99(plus tax) PSPGo isn't the only option though and while it's a very attractive device shouldn't be the goto device when talking about the price of a PSP.
You should get a 2000/3000, there's plenty of great games out for it and I'm sure second-hand, you'd probably find one for $100 or thereabouts.
DUDE, the data swap is a GREAT idea, otherwise you pretty much need a MASSIVE USB stick or a 3rd portable USB HDD (FAT32 formatted) in the mix to transfer data.
I'm very glad to see this added in the update.
Sony is full of win when it comes to added functionality in firmware updates.
All they need now is the much wanted (not by me particularly) cross-game chat and they're on a pretty much level playing field with what 360 has to offer (some might say they're even in a MORE advantageous position considering that they have features like web browsing and an easier to use media streaming setup).
Also nice to see PSP Minis upgraded to fully playable PSN software.
