huh. dynamic themes look sharp, but fuck, more avatars are long, long overdue. at this point, just give me a parappa or ico or something sony's been on that i dig, i dont want kratos # 32,842. this monkey's ok, but i mean, i only played ape escape a few times. where the fuck is snake?!
THE XMB needs to go! The XMB bar is great for handhelds but I personally don't like it on a big screen. Inflate the XMB with imagines or come up with something new!
@Xcite79: I think the xmb is a pretty decent user interface. It's organized and 'clean'.
Seems like these additions just made it easier to get to content, giving them a place to advertise at us but in an unobtrusive way because we can always move off the PSN tab or just not stop on it.
It sort of seems more like a website now too. Which is kinda cool.
@Lnin0: Both of those things are already on the PS3. Avatars are just images, not Miis. Premium themes have also existed for some time.
Of course, they were good enough to copy Microsoft's "Since you've decided to boot your console, why not buy more from us?"attitude with their "boot-to-ads" model.
I'll echo everyone else in this but what about freakin backwards compatibility? sure they can add all these extra links to the store and extra ways to make money. why don't they add backwards compatibility and make even more?
Granted, I haven't missed ps2 but I have games I'd like to play and it would be really nice to have the ps3 upscale the graphics to 1080p (or even 720p). They could also make money from this. If they are having such good success selling ps1 games in the store, imagine if they started selling ps2 games in the store? Sadly I see that happening by porting over specific games to run on ps3. Meaning you can't use physical ps2 discs but can buy them in the store. Still though, IT'S A WAY TO MAKE MONEY and sony still isn't doing it. Just seems like an easy way to get more money and they apparently knew how to do backwards compatibility because they had the 60gb that uses software BC (I think). Maybe that will be what they do for the next "taking it to the next level"
@vrillusions:
They'll do it when the market's good and ripe for it. As irritating as it is for the consumers, they're still making good money selling slim PS2s and disc-based games, but rest assured that late this generation or early into the next, we'll see PS2 games on the PS Store. And they'll make good money from it then, but for the time being, they're already raking it in, so we can't get a break as far as BC is concerned.
Also, there were 20GB and 60GB units with an Emotion Engine, but I have an 80GB that does software BC that's really been flawless so far with any of my PS2 games. They're well capable of it with what they have now, they just want to line their pockets as much as possible for the time being, then switch to emulation when it works best for them. Their timing was stupid though, releasing with BC then yanking it. It's obviously still a sore spot for a lot of people.
I think I'll stick to my "meh" smily. It fits my feelings on this update enough.
As far as dynamic themes go, that's cool but... I'm not paying for backgrounds. There are websites devoted to non-dynamic themes that work just as well and they're free... Moving backgrounds, I think, are a bit distracting too, so I'll stick to the free themes. If only I could figure out how to alter systems sounds in my custom themes...

I can't understand why Sony haven't implemented it. Does Microsoft have some kind of patent?

YAY! MORE ADS! I HOPE I CAN SIT AND WAIT FOR THESE ADS TO LOAD, TOO!

All I have wanted since day one is the ability to use CUSTOM avatars...
Why the fuck should I have to pay for one!?
Bullshit I tell ya,

Ridiculous.

How can you supply an entire Emotion Engine in a firmware update?
Plus, if you really did give a shit about playing your damn PS2 games, you'd have gotten a PS3 back when they first came out. WITH BC. IDIOTS.

And it would be cool if you could stream your music from your harddrive in your personal space in @home.
