@tim rogers: in other words, guys, just vote for me, OK?
my only post on my for-a-day kotaku editorship will be six hours' worth of youtube videos of me sitting in my office playing space invaders on DS and squeezing hand grips
Brian, I were wondering if you could clarify (just a little more) what you meant by the following:
"We randomly picked out five finalists from the list for you, the rest of the readers, to check out."
The selections had some good reading to it, but with readers questioning the method of picking on page 1, I'm left to wonder if there were potentially better choices available.

I think it kind of sucks that people that have made real contributions to making this site what it is through their comments and worked hard on a submission weren't even considered, while someone who has no friends on here and not even an avatar gets in randomly. Not only that, someone that supports piracy. Maybe the Kotaku editors should have at least read through their comments before putting them up to be winners:
From Eran: @Jandlecack: I was going to buy. It was released broken. I pirated.
LET IT BE KNOWN. Release a broken game, face the consequences. Just like it happened to Spore (yes, I call DRM a game-breaker).
@jayntampa: Listen, GTA4 was a brilliant game and I truly appreciated that a PC version was made, but the fact is if the developers are so lazy as to release the game broken, they aren't going to get buyers. Look at what happened to the people who bought it on Steam, offered refunds, that's how bad the release was.
And then the patch goes out, promising to fix many of the problems. Does it do that? No. It breaks it even more.
Fallout 3 was, and still is laden with bugs, but it's a good purchase because it's playable. Not only that, but the DRM is a version of SecuROM that does not more than checking the disk.
Whereas the DRM shipping with Spore actually limits the number of installs you can have with the game. As someone who suffered hard drive failure about twice over the last year, before getting a new PC this year (which, if I bought Spore would mean four installs), you can see how I'd consider Spore's DRM to be game-breaking to the level that I'd have no option but to pirate it. BTW, I don't have Spore, nor have I pirated it.
I buy games regularly and the majority of games on my PC I own. The others are Assassin's Creed (which I already own on another system), Crysis (which I use predominantly as a benchmarking program for my computer's preformace based on frames per second as opposed to a game) and some old games like Worms Armageddon and Enter The Matrix which I no longer have working disks for, but had in the past.
@Slatz_Grobnik: He's accepted that he's doing something illegal, and his justification is he had no choice. Just like a man who steals bread to feed his starving family. Or someone who is forced to kill a burglar to protect his family. Or a teenager who punches his wall because his mom took away his Xbox.
@Eran: So ... what you're saying is, anything you buy regularly, you're allowed to steal when there is something you don't like about it? For example, I like automatic cars ... but there is one I really want to drive, but it's manual -- since it doesn't control the way I like, I have no option but to steal it.
Hm. I don't remember reading that you guys were going to pick at random. I couldn't be arsed to do it, given my flimsy support for the the Kotaku community these days (seriously, the level of discussion in the comments is one step above a wrestling forum or something)... but I feel for all those people who took the time to submit entries thinking you would actually read them. Poor form, guys, but Merry Christmas anyhow.
I'm guessing there were more responses than they anticipated, as the original contest mentioned they would sort through the submissions and ask the finalists each for an additional writing sample. With the holidays coming up, it's plausible that some finalists would not be able to submit on time, pushing the conclusion of this contest until after the new year, which kind of nullifies the 2008 retrospective aspect.
Without passing any judgment on the current finalists, I hope that one day Kotaku will sort through the responses and select the five they felt were the best written. I for one didn't submit my thoughts for the swag, but rather the chance to express an opinion.
These are great, I just wish the contest had a longer deadline as the Holidays are right around the corner. I wasn't able to pursue the submission idea I had in time. Oh well, guess that is part of the contest as well, time management.
Wasn't the whole idea about who writes best? Whose picks were the most interesting?
The post introducing rules of contest said:
"We'll sort through them a select a batch of finalists who will then need to submit a writing sample for the whole class to read, so that your future readership for a day can have the final vote."
Select = drawn at random?
Seriously, no more Kotaku contests for me. I spent couple hours to select posts, to justify why I like them and to put it down in decent writing (I'm not a native speaker, so I was double careful about that part). I also had the idea to chose more general types of posts and explain it, giving particular posts as examples. I thought it would be cool.
Effort wasted. Should have done something useful with my life in the meantime. Serious disappointment here.
@The Maginomicon: Well, no. I don't think the problem is that it's random. I mean, can you imagine how many responses they need to sort through? The problem is a matter of disclosure.
@Slatz_Grobnik: Maybe to streamline it they could have just had "Your Favorite Article" and one for "Worst Article of the Year" instead of three full entries each. That would have cut down on their reading times substantially. Or, I guess, it could open the floodgates for more entries but I doubt it. Whoever wanted to enter, entered. But *shrugs* what can you do? Best of luck to the five selected!
@Slatz_Grobnik: Yup, precisely. I mean, if it was supposed to be random from the very beginning, this should have been made clear in the rules of contest. I would have passed on the competition (never won anything in random draw).
Implying that all entries will be pre-screened before second round and then drawing at random is rather disappointing.
All in all, let's move along. Also, let me make this abundantly clear - I have no hard feelings whatsoever to our finalists, not their fault this turned out to be so (although I am a little envious, obviously).
Yeah I literally dug through most of Kotaku's posts for the year. Like you said, I'm not bitter, it just stinks to put that much into it to find out it was random. I totally would have just done it off the cuff had I known that.
@Brian Crecente: No offense Mr. God of the Tower, but that doesn't really make things better. I mean, suppose you picked the 5 most pathetically written entries at random (hypothetically)... does picking the best of the worst through a vote make it ok that they all still stunk and that several well-written entries got passed over?
@[Dextr]: I saw that. I just didn't think those where their Kotaku avatar names. Never seen them :( I'm sure there's a simple answer to this but I'm not very bright :(
@okenny :) ...building bridges (to hide under): I really am dumber then I look. Apparently I can post it directly into the URL like so: http: / / kotaku.com / people / SolidSpider / and it works. I am Winnor! :(..

If I'd known it was a lottery, I would not have spent as much time as I did, seeing as it put me in no better stead than anyone else.
This post is the end of my bitterness over it, but very poorly played, Kotaku.

But next time be more clear my dears!!!
Or angry mobs will gather at the entrance of the virtual Tower and demand blood :P
Lets just wish everyone a great Xmas and be done with griefing over something trivial :)

No. Freakin'. Point.
Knowing they were random, I'm surprised we didn't get more fanboy entries. (i.e. "This post sucked because it wasn't about the PS3")
No finalist selection should ever be random.
12/23/08
12/23/08
A little over 100, actually.
Still, if they were going to make it random, they should of said so from the beginning, instead of implying it would be based on skill.

You picked out the finalists randomly???
Does that mean what I think it does, or are there more finalists on "the list"?
12/23/08
5 people, at random
sure it sucks cause I thought the idea was to screen them based upon their ability to write and analyse (no disrespect comment dudes who got in)
I spent a good while trawling through Kotaku looking for my picks then a good hr writing about them for nowt, well, at least I enjoyed writing them!!!
Not really bitter, just disappointed im not in it lol!
