@excel_excel: FFX, definitely. There's no way around it. The only game to make me cry to date; just a few tears, though. Shadow of the Colossus was touching at the end, but no tears. There was a game that got me choked up, but I can't remember what it was...recent game, actually. I want to say on the 360.
Anime though, Cowboy Bebop I will agree on, and twice as well. Once for Spike's supposed death, and the casting of Keanu Reeves as Spike for the other. #finalfantasyx
@excel_excel: Cowboy Bebop? I've seen that series like 4 times.. Wait, have you seen "Graveyard of the Fireflies"? That's pretty much the saddest anime film ever, bordering on dangerous to watch if you have tendencies toward depression. My friends and I always explain it as an excellent film, but almost traumatic to watch. #finalfantasyx
@excel_excel: You should definitely see it. In terms of anime, it is practically in a category all its own. But you have been forewarned: it is so sad it will feel like someone has kicked you in the stomach with steel toed boots. #finalfantasyx
@excel_excel: ludwigk is correct. It's an amazing film. Everybody should watch it. But only once. You're soulless if you do not cry at the end this film. #finalfantasyx
@ThisCharmingMan: I have to carefully ration my Lost Odyssey playing, especially viewing the memories. Something about the whimsical storytelling gets me every time... #finalfantasyx
I'm pretty sure most of the people who are shocked that FFX is at the top are the people who, well, never played FFX. That, or they didn't respond to the gameplay much/were distracted by RL things during their playthrough.
FFX had an amazing plot, despite being a bit convoluted in certain places, but it's able to pull off complicated twists so well because the build-up to each emotional climax is so artfully executed.
I mean honestly, without giving much away to those who have yet to play it, when Tidus finds out about Yuna's destiny at the Al Bhed HQ, and thinks back on all that he'd said to her leading up to that moment in time...
How about when the gang finally arrives at Zanarkand? You could cut the tension with a knife. Knowing what they have to do, with 'To Zanarkand' playing in the background as the team is forced to push along the treacherous path. Also, the fact that the song persists even in battles reminding us that Tidus and co. probably aren't even all that concerned about the king behemoth they just encountered, because each is so wrapped up in his or her own thoughts and regrets.
That's without even mentioning the final scene.
If you haven't played it yet, do so. If you're one of those people who feels determined to hate the story purely because you can't get past the fact that a certain character(s) annoys you a bit, I feel sorry for you.
@cgiovina: Agreed. Final scene is what did it for me (although I didn't actually cry, I was very sad :( No game has made me cry yet, although some anime have).
The whole time throughout the ending portion of the game you wanted them to go against the inevitable, but they couldn't :( #finalfantasyx
Since Clannad is on there, I'm surprised there weren't any other visual novels that made the Top 5. If the list went on, I assume there would be others.
Anyway, FFX certainly made me cry, too. So did Lost Odyssey, and a couple others.... Can't recall right now though. #finalfantasyx
@Jeremy: Ah!!! Torment! Which ending did you get? I got the ending in which he does what he should have done instead of becoming immortal, so I ended up satisfied. #finalfantasyx
@MichaelPalin: I don't recall, actually. Is it sad that I don't remember the ending that actually made me weep? It's likely the "good" one. Probably the one you speak of. #finalfantasyx
@poplin: When my fucking dog dies and the RIGHT thing to do is bring all of the people who died building the fucking tower back to life. So I did that. But I still resent the fucking developers. Asshole cocksucking motherfuckers. #finalfantasyx
@Jeremy: ahahah i barely noticed, cause well.... i did the right thing and brought the dog back.
Didn't see any value in "the right thing" but then again, I also felt the ending was very flawed in that regard, considering i had two wives and a husband, and didnt particularly care about any of them #finalfantasyx
@Jeremy: i guess the other reason i wasn't affected by the dog's death was that with the amount of hype about it, i kinda saw it coming a mile away.
that and the death was so sudden and kinda poorly framed that i was left with a feeling of 'really? that was it?' that left zero emotional impact. did suck having to choose dog or thousands of dead people, do kinda wish they'd made the villagers less despicable so the decision was harder to make #finalfantasyx
MOTHER 2? I'm actually more shocked that they cried at that, and not at MOTHER 3. There wasn't really anything in MOTHER 2 to get emotional about, unlike M3, which had me in tears.
Maybe the "Smiles and Tears" song got to their hearts?
To be clear here is a description of my physical state. I'm 6"1' I weigh 205 lbs. I work out on a daily basis. I am quite muscular. I have 2 foot long hair, a beard, and I'm told I have an incredibly menacing stare even when I'm not trying.
Now imagine that okay? Got it?
Now imagine it sobbing like a little bitch at the end of Final Fantasy X.
@Muhhamed Ali: Kudos for coming out. I feel you, man. I'm huge (6"6', posture to go with it) cynical bastard with sarcastic sense of humour in general - and some movies get me sobbing. As for games, see comment below. #finalfantasyx
Weird thing: I had the same reaction, then in FFX-2, I got weepy at the *good* ending when they were finally reunited again. The end of a journey and all that. #finalfantasyx
@Diamond_Sutra: I tried playing FFX-2 to 100% percent but It just felt way too tedious. So instead I watched the perfect ending on youtube and wept a happy little tear. #finalfantasyx
This article reminds me of the following song.
So far no game has touched me enough to make me wanna cry. If my father played games that had long movie like storylines he might cry. Me I tend to be too detached and clinical. #finalfantasyx
Hmm, was going to say that no game made me cry, but I just remembered that by the end of the "Abbey Road" medley I was a sniffling wreck. #finalfantasyx
Oddly enough, no game ever got me crying (I tend to get quite emotional on some movies, though).
But there were definitely some that really touched me and brought me to the verge of shedding a tear (you know, when you already have a half tear in a corner of your eye):
- Final Fantasy VI - lots of emotional moments, wonderful storytelling. Terra's story, Celes' story, Locke's story, brother's story, suicide moment, kid orphanage, world destruction - there's so many of them. They don't make games like this anymore.
(for a bit of a melancholic mood of the game, check this video: [www.youtube.com] )
- Final Fantasy VII - not only Aerith's death, but also later moments.
- Silent Hill 2 - right before ending, when James realizes what he has done and apologizes to his wife, crying. This is the epitome of striking emotional chords in gaming. The moment when Angela is climbing the fiery staircase. The moment when James is watching a certain videotape.
- Silent Hill 1 - when Lisa realises that she is actually dead and starts bleeding. The moment when Cybil dies.
- this one is going to be strange for some - Lumines, the last skin. This requires a bit of an explanation - I have completed it on the plane leaving Japan and somehow end of Lumines and enf of Japan has fused in my mind. Since I bought Lumines in Japan and played it all the time throughout my stay, so the end of both was a bit painful. More details in my old blog post: [www.bartsnews.net]
(sorry for the plug)
- Prince of Persia: Sands of Time - when Prince realizes that by reversing all, he has lost Farrah.
... I can't shake off the feeling that I have missed something important, but can't recall now.
Also, there was the moment in Manhunt when James Earl Cash is shown how his family is murdered. Not exactly weeping sad, but it somehow touched me. I often identify with the protagonist and this has definitely struck the chord, even though I saw it coming.
- God of War: The Chains of Olympus - when Kratos has to destroy Heavens, also erasing his daughter, and he struggles with her. Player has to actively shake her off and Kratos does it very slowly, with a lot of effort (felt by player, smashing the buttons), not looking at her. Excellent mix of storytelling and player involvment.
- Deus Ex - "New Dark Age" ending and the voice of Tracer Tong through coms: "...JC...the net... the net is going black.. if you can hear me... then find us... find us!". #finalfantasyx

Exactly what I was going to say. This was the most powerful FF to me. #finalfantasyx
