Frankly only FFVII, FFVIII, and FFX really get any love from Distant Worlds. They could seriously use more tracks. The only reason FFXI tracks even get used is because Distant Worlds is the name of the Chains of Promathia final track(and when Susan is singing it the song quite frankly steals the entire fucking show). Now we're getting FFXIV tracks as promotional material.
Honestly? I'd wish they'd just drop most of the FFVII and FFVIII tracks in favor of more Ivalice tracks, early FFs(instead of primarily doing medley), and more of the FFXI scores that get so little love for have several incredible OSTs per expansion.
Xarcabard, Mhaura, Flowers on the Battlefield, and Gustaberg from The Star Onion's Sanctuary release are some of the most beautiful tracks of the series and hearing a live performance of the Gustaberg rearrangement would be thrilling.
@Black-Dog-Howls: I agree with everything you said, especially concerning the lack of enthusiasm for the FFXI soundtrack. It's been a long time since I stopped playing FFXI but when I listen to the songs I can't help but recall my adventures in Vanadiel. Since I was a Bard and combat in FFXI tended to be slow (when I played) I spent a lot of time listening to the BGM while keeping my songs up and healing.
I also understand why there isn't more attention paid to the soundtrack. There simply aren't as many people that are familiar with the songs of FFXI compared to music from FFVII or FFVIII. They have to produce music that people want to listen to, and FFXI simply wasn't as popular.
A large reason why people listen to this music is because of their personal experiences with it, and nostalgia. The actual composition of the music is secondary. I'll admit that the music from FFXI that I enjoy most also tend to be the ones that I have the greatest memories attached to.
Edit: Goodness, the rearrangements are REALLY good.
@Leanid: They even have a Jazzy version of Distant Worlds on the Sanctuary release. This one has a higher quality than previous ones ~ most notably the odd soft jazz rendition of Zi'tah which was one of the best BGMs of FFXI.
Still, I do find it annoying that some of the best pieces in the FF line up get brushed aside. FF fan aside and speaking purely on the merits of the music, FF7s OST can be....awfully drab in comparison to other tracks. I mean do we really need six or seven tracks from FF7 in a show that's supposed to encompass 20 years of games? I get the nostalgia, but damn, FF7s OST isn't that good. #finalfantasytactics
@Black-Dog-Howls: I would love to hear Naoshi Mizuta's work in a Distant Worlds concert, but I think what they use from XI is largely influenced by Uematsu.
It's a shame, really; Mizuta's work in later expansions was simply amazing and it leaves me a little disheartened to know that Uematsu so far will be scoring XIV alone. #finalfantasytactics
I'd love a proper sequel to this game. None of this advance book magic land bullshit. A cool story, without judges, where people betray and kill each other.
@Hey_Blinkon:To be fair, FFTA2 explained that following the judges rules is completely up to the clans. Some do, some don't. So it's not a hard and fast rule and FFTA dealt with many a foe/clan who never worked under a Judge.
@Desertwolf:The drugs your on must be amazing, simply amazing. EB had so many copies of FF8 traded in when I was working there that home office was close to telling the stores "Don't take it." And we were still taking in copies of FF7, even the shittastic PC release.
@anduin1:The story was a tad weak, Freya, nor anyone other then Vivi got much attention and Dagger was almost as annoying as Cloud, Squall and Tidus, but after FF8, it was great. It was also the very last 'old school' like FF, other then FF11, as every FF has followed the '10 formula' from then on.
I'm with you. FF8 fricken stinks, it's such a watered down Final Fantasy experience. Draw/Stock, Draw/Stock, Draw/Stock, Draw/Stock, Draw/Stock, CGI cutscene, Draw/Stock, Draw/Stock, Draw/Stock, Draw/Stock, Draw/Stock, Summon, Draw/Stock,Draw/Stock,Draw/Stock.
@DigitalHero:If I -ever- have to steal spells again in a SE release, I'm going to nuke their home office. That was the second most inane shit ever, right after spending all the money they did making Secret of Evermore instead of bringing SOM3 to the states.
@DigitalHero: @Foxstar is in love with Kotaku's two Brians.: Argh FF8 defense force GO! Seriously i see this arguement all the time and its easy to refine spells, you dont have to draw them. As for watered down, I think the junctioning system would argue with that.
...Though i will conceed it still is the worst magic system of the series (Though junctioning partially saves it)
@Megamoppy:I thought Secret of Evermore's magic system was worse then junctioning. Nothing like massively unwanted grinding for stuff to cast your spells with, then burning though it all because spells level up like they do in Mana.
@DaveStrife: You said it yourself. "it took a turn into a setting that was all wrong for an FF game".
FF9 is pretty much known to be a return to the traditional fantasy setting of the older games. Castles, knights, black mages, etc. There was even a Crystal in FF9, and Crystals played a heavy part in the stories of FF1, 4 and 5.
"But sometimes, it's not so much about the playing as it is the having, isn't it?"
Except that the PSP version is superior for a number of reasons, not the least of which is the vastly improved translation. War of the Lions is one of the main reasons I still have my PSP and a fantastic update. Going back to the PS1 release just wouldn't be the same.
@Lezard: The PSP version runs slower, though... Like... Hideously slower. It nearly crashes every time you cast magic. It's terrible. I have the PS1 version ripped to my PSP and it runs better emulated than the PSP native version (which I also own) does... That's really sad. An emulated game should not work better than a game made for the system...
You're not tricking me into buying this again square! I already have it for PS1 and PSP (Neither Pirated) So buying it a third time just seems downright silly!
@Fadecy: Rival Schools for PSN/XBLA PLZ: I would so buy FFIX. I've had an urge to play that game for a couple months now. Might buy VIII, but I'd rather have IX. Already have Lion War for my PSP, so I have no real interest in buying FFT, for a third time.
@Derangel: We need FFIX on PSN. Such a good game! I never tried VIII, though. Heard some good things and some bad things about it, so I'm not sure what to think.
@FreakyFavabean: People don't like FFVIII because it wasn't FFVII. FFIX essentially took some of the design choices and stylistic elements from FFVIII and combined them with a more traditional JRPG game engine.
FFVIII's a great game, just play it like it was Chrono Cross: Know there's games before it, but pretend they don't exist.
@mintycrys is HOT for Bayonetta:Chrono Cross was miles above FF8. Miles and miles. It had a bloated cast, sure but it's one of the rare SE follow ups to take a darker view at the results of 'saving the world'. I thought watching the spirits of Marle, Lucca and Chrono curse you out of frustration that all the effort they put into defeating Larvos being useless a stroke of writing gold. And hey, we finally got to see what happened to Magus's sister.
Puzzles and word games are usually fine, but anything else that has any real action in it is more of a chore than fun.
Rolando, as fun as it is, becomes frustrating after a while because of frustrating combinations I have to sometimes put my wrists/fingers in. Not to mention any game that I have to touch to manipulate the actual character (instead of an on screen control like Pacman, for instance) ends up being more distracting because you are covering the screen with your finger.
I was really excited about gaming on it at first. Especially after seeing what it is capable graphics wise, but now I am really turned off by it. I'm most likely going to give up on iPhone gaming unless something truly amazing (control wise) comes along.

If VII's sales numbers are any indicator, Square would be a fool not to.
It's good money, and there's a tremendous demand for it.

I didn't think it was likely, though, considering the PSP remake. When it does come out, day 1 purchase from me!
It's awesome how the PSOne Classics worth owning pretty much doubled in less than a month ( for me, at least).
