@Sean Johnson: Speak for yourself. I loved FFVII, but this film is a fucking atrocity. It's only (and I mean only) redeeming quality is that it's "pretty". Unfortunately you seem to be in the majority considering the garbage that always make it to top of the box office.
Forgive me for latching onto only one small part of this article and running with it, but "since Red XIII was supposedly the last of his kind" isn't true!
While some people theorize that somehow, Red was hermaphroditic and was impregnated by Aeris (Hojo was trying to mate them, aften all), the truth is far simpler.
Bugenhagen told Red XIII to go with Cloud and the gang so that he could find others of his race! I thought it was pretty clear that his tribe was scattered by the Gi, and that he was simply the only one left in Cosmo Canyon.
There is Final Fantasy VII the game, and THAT IS IT. I know the story was good enough to attempt its milking, but that's it for me.
Reading about this just makes me want to play the damn game again. To me, it seems that fans would be content with a Psycho (the movie) style remake for new consoles.
why do i get teh sense that the prson who wrote this is 13 and only plays FPS's??? by far the gayest post ever on kotaku and seems just to exist to bash a product instead of actually reviewing it.
@excel_excel:EDIT* ppl who say the FVII GAME are holocaust deniers. the movie i could care less lol so ease up excel_excel and decelerate your mouth(fingers?) a bit.
Personally, I liked the movie. It gave me what I wanted- The cast of FFVII reunited for an action romp for good times sake. The visuals were great too and the story was easy to understand, at least for me.
@-MasterDex-: I did like the movie....but....Damn it, Kadaj I hated him. And then there was all that stuff about the team popping up to help Cloud for no reason.
This film is excellent popcorn nonsense. More heavy on the nonsense than the action, but then FF7 music remixes happen and you remember a pretty good game so it makes it all better.
Who exactly is this article for I must ask... People who are going to buy the new disk obviously arn't going to want to be spoiled. People who arn't going to buy the movie don't care about the movie, and therefore why would they care?
Or is this just an article so that AJ can boast that she watched it before most of North America? Thats all it seems to be about.
@Scazza: As someone who watched the original cut, doesn't have a Blu-Ray player and is mildly curious about what they actually added, it was an amusing read.
@Scazza: I don't think you'll get banned for that. But if the fanboys can't accept that this is a pretty apt description of their beloved movie than... :D
I liked the movie...which seems to be about as "against the grain" as one get get among gamers. Well, that and actually liking Final Fantasy 7.
I'll get the movie, enjoy it, and probably chuckle a bit in five or ten years when people are complaining as bitterly about the Tales series or Gears of War.
@excel_excel: Yeah, I am. Take a look around at any article that involves that game and you see about 75-90% hate.
I'm not denying that most of that is probably folks just jumping on a bandwagon (even gaming has its hipsters), but even so...
Also, it seems a touch disingenuous to be invoking the spin-offs when you yourself had this to say in other posts on this article:
ha nice one AJ. And keep in mind how the fanboys still declared the first cut of the movie to be 'totally amazing'
and
I think its a pretty funny description of what complete is like
Now please understand, I'm not holding your (or anyone else's opinion) against them. You're as entitled to dislike this movie or anything else pertaining to Final Fantasy 7 as I am to enjoy it.
All I'm saying is that the burden of proof no longer lies with the fans...it's really the harsh critics that seem to be dominating the discussions these days.
@Nightshift Nurse:I liked FF7 when it came out, but I think a lot of the FF7 bandwagon is run on the fact that people who had never touched a RPG before or hadn't touched one from the NES on picked it up and for them it was their first time.
For me, I thought FF9 was so much better and the last old style FF we got, after that we've never looked back, save for FF11 which IMHO has the richest story out of all of the FF's, but most people who played it will never know.
No matter what my issues with 7 were, it's not nearly as bad as 8.
@Foxstar is in love with Kotaku's two Brians.: See, I think I might actually be one of the rare few that has enjoyed every Final Fantasy title. It's been to varying degrees of course (and I've yet to actually play Final Fantasy 11), but I can still say that I consider every game to be at least good, some great, and a few excellent and/or damn well near perfect.
@Nightshift Nurse: 75% to 90% hate? For the game??? really?? You can't ignore that its hyped immensely. And I personally loved the game but was refering to the movie.
@Nightshift Nurse: Also what I was saying in the I think its a pretty funny description of what complete is like comment was simply trying to say to who I was replying to what the article was.
@excel_excel: I think so, yes. Particularly if one still invokes it as one of the better (or best) examples of the genre.
My experience has typically been "sucks" "generic anime characters" "emo" etc. being dropped with more frequency than any praise for the title. I also think it's worth noting that equally hyped and iconic titles from that era (Ocarina of Time, Super Mario 64, Metal Gear Solid) seem to avoid much of this backlash...which has no doubt contributed to my feeling that Final Fantasy 7 has been somehow singled out.
@Nightshift Nurse: Good point...it get more hate than those two I agree. Maybe its because to a lot of people its just the next Final Fantasy after VI (which I loved too, god man I love that game) that introduced 3D to the game and offered a new stoty. while to those that played it as their first Final Fantasy (espicially in europe seeing as how it was the first one released) or even their first RPG see it as a revolutionary title.
I personally think its the best of the PS1 FFs but still you can see that theres so many people who adored the others more and yet wheres there spin-offs!!
Besides if were talking "generic anime characters" and "emo" then your talking VIII :P Which I loved as well. God damn IV to IX were nearly all fantastic
@excel_excel: I don't know how generic the characters in Final Fantasy 8 were, though the repressed memories thing did get a little tough to swallow after a while...especially since it had been utilized in Final Fantasy 7. It seemed like a theme of convenient plot devices Square was exploring (though Final Fantasy 9 is a guilty of using that device as well).
But like I said, I've enjoyed every entry in the series...and I loved part 8. I personally feel that Final Fantasy 6-7-8 represented the highest peak of the central offerings.
I also liked 8 more than 7. To be honest, after leaving Midgar, 7 fizzled for me and I didn't like Cloud. Hell, I bought a PSX at launch because I had previously read in EGM (back when EGM was like 8 million pages) that FF7 was coming out for the PSX.
That said, upon finishing it, I found that Cloud was a crap main character. And I had said to my friends, at that point, I would have loved it if Zack was the main character instead - he seemed infinitely more likeable from the 5 minuyes we saw him.
Lo and behold, 10ish years later, Crisis Core comes out and yes. I liked it much better than the original (gameplay notwithstanding).
Likewise, as much as I liked FF8, it would have been much better with less Squall and more Laguna.
That's because people are less *fucking mentally delusional* when it comes to these other games. You have less crazies obsessing over MGS than you do over FF7.
@Nightshift Nurse: I was joking about VIII personally I didn't think they were generic at the time although today they seem so...I mean looking back and all...I loved the game though, Rinoa and Squalls relationship was a hell of a lot better than the aborted mess that was X's central relationship....
@excel_excel: (espicially in europe seeing as how it was the first one released)
Wait, wait, wait...you guys never got any of the NES or SNES titles?!?
Jesus, I'm sorry. I never realized that was the case...it's actually giving me kind of a fresh perspective on where some of this animosity may be coming from too.
@Nightshift Nurse: You guys sure love throwing the term "generic" around. Would you rather the main character was a slightly racist and foul mouthed beaver with normal hair and an edgy attitude? Because that would be the opposite of generic. Original. Retarded, but original.
@excel_excel: The first cut was amazing imo. Just because you and Roger Ebert over here don't think so doesn't mean we're wrong. It had it's flaws for sure, but it gave fans (fanboys if you wanna put a derogatory spin) what we wanted.
