Tetsuya Nomura worked as main character designer on Final Fantasy XIII, director and designer for Kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep and ditto for Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

We forgot Final Fantasy Agito XIII! He's character designer for that, too.

In the most recent issue of Famitsu, Nomura reveals that he is working on two unannounced titles. He gives some updates, saying that they are working to bring up the quality so that the difference between real time and pre-renders in the upcoming Final Fantasy Versus XIII is seamless. He also says that development for Agito is going favorably.

"There is a still yet unannounced title that I am working on sooner than thought," he says. Voice recording for this title has begun.

"It's not a brand new title, but there is one more unannounced title."

<![CDATA[No Final Fantasy Versus XIII At Tokyo Game Show]]> According Square Enix game designer Tetsuya Nomura, Final Fantasy XIII will be playable. His title, Final Fantasy Versus, won't be anywhere to be seen, however.

Unlike last year, Square Enix will not be screening trailers for upcoming titles like Final Fantasy Versus XIII and instead will be focusing on playable demos for titles due out in the next year.

That apparently means no new trailers, screens or footage of Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Final Fantasy Agito XIII or Parasite Eve: The Third Birthday.

Final Fantasy XIII is slated for this winter in Japan, while FF Versus XIII still is TBA. Surely, people can make due with a new FFXIII demo, no?

<![CDATA[Final Fantasy Versus XIII Dev Time "Comparatively Faster" Than FFXIII]]> Sick of looking at these same Final Fantasy Versus XIII screen shots? Yeah. Me too. Well, the good news is that development on Final Fantasy XIII is doing wonders for that other Fabula Nova Crystallis entry, according to the developer.

Square Enix's Yoshinori Kitase told us at Gamescom this week that development time on Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be "comparatively faster" than that of the core entry, Final Fantasy XIII. That reassuring update to the more action-oriented entry in the Fabula Nova Crystallis project came after Kitase said that the time to model characters and enemies in FFXIII was taking about one-third the time it did at the beginning of the project.

We knew that some Versus team members had been pulled off that project to work on XIII, and Kitase said that the team's "knowledge and experience" gained from their work will help ensure Versus is out faster.

If Kitase's "comparatively faster" estimate is accurate, we'll hopefully see Versus XIII by 2011, give or take, since the game and Final Fantasy XIII have been in development for at least five years, maybe more. Still a long way out, but at least Final Fantasy XIV should be out by then, giving fans something to do in the in-between.

<![CDATA[How's Final Fantasy Versus XIII Coming Along?]]> With the Final Fantasy XIII hype machine in full gear, we haven't heard about that other Final Fantasy PS3 game, Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

In the latest issue of Japanese magazine Dengeki, Tetsuya Nomura provides an update. "The progress of developing Final Fantasy Versus XIII is going well," he says.

Nomura is surrounded with much of the same staff he's been working with since the FFVII days. According to Nomura, the staff and he are in tune and very much on the same page — they even catch things before he says them.

Currently the team is testing the battle and map mechanic over and over again as well as checking the game's lighting. "We did a lighting test for the cityscape during noon and evening," Nomura says. "It really gives a good impression — of a city right before your very eyes." Things like the character's actions are coming together bit by bit.

And with Final Fantasy XIII getting a new trailer at E3, Nomura adds, "I don't want to loose [to FFXIII]." While Final Fantasy XIII has been announced for the Xbox 360 in the West, Final Fantasy Versus XIII has only been announced for the PLAYSTATION 3.

<![CDATA[Update On Final Fantasy XIII And Final Fantasy Versus XIII]]> In a recent Famitsu article on Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete, Square Enix designer Tetsuya Nomura talks FFVII: ACC. We know about that, tell us about those unreleased Final Fantasy games!

Nomura told Famitsu that the voice recording for FFXIII is in its final stages. Versus-wise, Nomura says that the game's costume designer has finished up the character outfits for the main character and his comrades. The costumes are apparently hard to recreate in-game due to their material. They also accidently made a pair of shoes that don't match. DOH.

Rest easy — whenever Square Enix finally releases FF Versus XIII, the characters will be well dressed. Phew.

<![CDATA[Final Fantasy Versus XIII In-Game Looks Like This]]> At last year's Tokyo Game Show, Square Enix screened an in-game Final Fantasy Versus XIII cut scene in its Closed Mega Theater. Now, everyone can see that footage.

Final Fantasy Versus XIII, not to be confused with Final Fantasy XIII, was first shown at E3 2006. The game features different characters, a different look and a different plot from FFXIII. While Final Fantasy XIII is expected to be out this winter in Japan, Versus XIII is still TBA.

This clip was originally uploaded by Japanese gamer esegk, who played through the Final Fantasy XIII demo yesterday for a couple hours.

<![CDATA[Square Enix Has Future Plans For Final Fantasy VII Series]]> As Blu-ray movie Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete readies for release, Square Enix's Tetsuya Nomura talks about the film and the franchise.

As has been previous announced, Square Enix has gone through and amped up Advent Children for this HD release.

Fan favorite FFVII has been revisited multiple times with the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII series, which encompasses games and movies like Advent Children. To date, there have been four Compilation of FFVII games and two films. The series is headed up by Nomura and fellow Square Enix producer Yoshinori Kitase.

When asked about the next entry in the series, Square Enix's Tetsuya Nomura replied, "We do have an idea for the next Compilation, and for the time being, that's all we can say. It won't start up anytime soon."

With Nomura busy with Final Fantasy Versus XIII, Kitase producing Final Fantasy XIII and all hands on deck for both games, Nomura's probably right.

<![CDATA[Final Fantasy Versus XIII Site Also Opens Today]]> It's not just Final Fantasy XIII that is just getting a site with new stuff, but also Final Fantasy Versus XIII — minus the new stuff.

The FFVXIII site is barebones — things like it's release date and rating are still TBA. That screen grab is pretty much it! Still, if you are interested in the game, you might want to bookmark the site. You are interested in the game, no? Final Fantasy XIII or Final Fantasy Versus XIII? That is the question.

<![CDATA[New Final Fantasy XIII Trailers Now For Your Eyes]]>

Square Enix has finally made publicly available the Final Fantasy XIII trailers it showed at its DKΣ3713 event this summer. There's a smattering of new footage, matched with old platform exclusivity information.

Yes, this Final Fantasy XIII trailer still ends with "Coming Soon for PlayStation 3" but all those pretty pre-rendered scenes make us forget about that console war ugliness. There's even a new Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailer for you to soak in!

Yep, not much in the way of gameplay here, but we know that at least five minutes worth of Versus XIII exists!

Thanks to everyone who reminded us that these trailers were out.

<![CDATA[First Final Fantasy Versus XIII Real Time PS3 Screens]]> The Tokyo Game Show 2008 Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailer featured one scene rendered in the PS3 in real time. According to the game's director Tetsuya Nomura, that scene was the one where Noctis meets blonde-haired heroine Stella. The upcoming issue of Japanese game magazine Famitsu has scans of this scene. Below in the gallery, there are blurry pics of them. Have a look.

<![CDATA[Hi. My Name Is Noctis, But You Can Call Me Noct. ]]> Final Fantasy game movie trailers are less game trailers and more movie trailers. So, the new Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailer wouldn't seem that different. It is! According to the game's director, Tetsuya Nomura, the trailer features at least one scene rendered in the PS3 in real time. The scene is where main hero Noctis meets blonde-haired heroine Stella. If that wasn't enough (it never is), the main character uses a shortened nickname of his moniker which means "of the night". Says Nomura:

His name is Noctis, but in game, he's typically called 'Noct.' In the scene in the promo trailer, Stella calls him by his full name.

Well, dur. You can't just start off calling him "Noct." Gotta work up to that. And if you get really tight with the guy, maybe, just maybe you can call him "Nocty".

<![CDATA[Vague Date for Final Fantasy XIII, Nothing For Versus XIII]]> Square Enix doesn't just have a closed theater, but a closed mega theater. There was about 40 minutes or so of trailers, including new Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailers. They, of course, looked great as one would expect from a big, glossy Square Enix trailer. However, there were not solid release dates for either title. Final Fantasy XIII was dated "Coming 2009 for PS3", while Versus XIII was simply "For PS3 Worldwide". Keep in mind that Final Fantasy XIII will not be getting an Xbox 360 release in Japan and that Versus XIII has always been a PS3 exclusive.

<![CDATA[More New (High Quality) Final Fantasy XIII, Versus XIII Images]]> Yesterday we posted scans from Famitsu PS3 of Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII. The quality on some of them was not very good! (Though, some of them were high quality scans.) Today we bring you high quality scans — with some new stuff peppered in. Like the armpit of FFXIII heroine Lightning. Just check that out and the gallery below. High quality, baby!

<![CDATA[New Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII Images]]> The most recent issue of Japanese game magazine Famitsu PS3 has loads of details about upcoming Square Enix titles Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII. As we previously posted, the FFXIII demo will be longer than Advent Children and will be on a regular Blu-ray disc. FFXIII will have a party battle system, and the story is being written so that each character apparently seems like the protagonist (instead of simply a supporting character). The magazine features around 20 new screenshots of Final Fantasy XIII, apparently real time, too. There are real-time screens of Versus XIII. It seems that the clothing and the cars in Versus XIII have been tweaked and look different. AT TGS, we can supposedly look forward to the name of the prince and the heroine being announced. Click through the gallery below — there are some high quality Final Fantasy Versus XIII scans. (The FFXIII aren't so high quality.)

<![CDATA[New Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII And Final Fantasy Agito XIII Screens]]> Here are some new (and small) Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy Versus XIII and Final Fantasy Agito XIII screens from the latest issue of Shonen Jump. Not must new info here, save for the FFXIII demo will be in the Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete Blu-ray. But we already knew that.

<![CDATA[Final Fantasy XIII Comes To Men's Formal Wear]]> While the surprise announcements that did come out of the Square Enix DKΣ3713 Private Party were definitely post-worthy, Final Fantasy Agito XIII coming to the PSP is a big deal doesn't hold a candle to oddball product cross-collaborations. The biggest news to come out of the weekend event was that Square Enix and Roen would be releasing Final Fantasy Versus XIII formal wear, real world items worn by in-game characters — perfect for the prom!

It looks like the collaboration works both ways, as this is more than just cheap cosplay stuff. Roen looks to have worked with Square Enix on character designs for Versus XIII.

Before you excitedly whip out the credit card, be warned that Roen is obscenely expensive. Sure, their tank tops are just dazzling, but even we balk at $240 price tags.

<![CDATA[Just to Be Clear: FF Versus XIII "PS3 Only Worldwide"]]> At Square Enix's DKS3713 — which sounds like a California license plate or the name of a clone from Star Wars — the trailer for Final Fantasy Versus XIII made dead damn solid certain to specify it was "Playstation 3 Only Worldwide." Hope we can all get back to the pre-betrayal state of things now.

Internet access was nonexistent, perhaps deliberately, for this event so a number of those who attended couldn't get up liveblogs. Also images of the screens were prohibited but you know someone's bootlegged at least one trailer, so if any tumble out we'll try to get them up (send a tip if you see one anywhere.)

We already got up the event's major announcements regarding Final Fantasy Agito XIII and Parasite Eve on the PSP, and the March 2009 due date for the Final Fantasy XIII demo. But there are a couple after action reports if you want descriptions of trailers seen and speculation on gameplay features arising from that. NeoGAF's is a pretty deep aggregation of Japanese blogs covering the show, I'd start there. Some things that caught my (untrained) eye:

• The Kingdom Hearts PSP version will add Snow White to Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty in Disney's crossover cohort.
• Final Fantasy XIII trailer showed gameplay but no actual battles, drawing out the tease.
• Versus XIII will cross-promote the ROEN fashion brand. All characters in the game will be wearing ROEN designs. Pure speculation, but I don't think it will affect gameplay, I think it's to make you want to buy those clothes.

<![CDATA["Leaked" Final Fantasy Versus XIII Trailer]]>
Here is what's apparently a "leaked" Final Fantasy Versus XIII trailer from last year's Jump Festa in Japan. The footage is of a trailer that was only shown in a closed theater, and isn't the complete trailer, but a good chunk of it. Oh, and yes, the trailer is 100 percent CG. Sounds like Lost Odyssey music has been added.

Thanks, Nicoara for the tip! In case this clip gets pulled, we've posted the clip after the jump. That one is slightly better quality.

<![CDATA[No Changes On Final Fantasy Versus XIII Being PS3 "Exclusive"]]> Square Enix's pledge of allegiance to the Xbox 360 platform in the form of a Final Fantasy XIII port may have shaken the PlayStation fanbase to its very core. The loss of yet another PlayStation 3 "exclusive" essentially makes message boards the equivalent of a dark alley for Sony devotees. What about the other Final Fantasy XIII project, Final Fantasy Versus XIII?

Shinji Hashimoto of Square Enix said at the publisher's press conference today that plans for Final Fantasy Versus XIII to ship as a PlayStation 3 exclusive haven't changed. Of course, we have no inkling about what exactly Square Enix's plans for the title have been from the get go, as the core entry, FF XIII, has long been touted as coming "only to PlayStation 3."

Stay strong, console warriors. We think it'd be best to resign yourselves to the fact that third party console exclusives are but a thing of the past and that both Xbox 360 and PS3 owners will be enjoying the title by 2012.

<![CDATA[Square Enix - Final Fantasy Versus XIII Not On Hold]]> Yesterday we reported that on comments made by Final Fantasy Versus XIII director Tetsuya Nomura in the latest issue of Famitsu that seemed to indicate that the game was being put on hold while team members helped get plain old FFXIII out the door. Not true, says Square Enix.

"Reports that development for Final Fantasy Versus XIII is on hold are false," the publisher said in a statement passed on to Eurogamer. "The truth of the situation is that when free, some staff from the Versus team have been helping with the XIII team on development of Final Fantasy XIII. Development for both titles is continuing as originally scheduled."

So either a misunderstood statement or perhaps someone a bit ticked that his staff is being nicked exaggerating a bit. I'm just a bit boggled by the very concept of game developers with free time myself. Does that happen?
