Just to clarify with people, FF XII had a 16+ pegi rating too, mainly because of the battle cutscenes at the start, so nothing out of the ordinary here
I'm wondering if the European box art will continue the trend of just being white with the game title / logo running through the middle. Given how Square have bucked a trend with releasing a new entry into the FF series, they could well roll with this for the PAL box art.
I like this image of Lightning though. It's not amazing. But it's a cool piece of art that's a little enigmatic.
@RockyRan: Interesting enough it's rather overdone compared to the old FF games prior to FF8/FF9, in which it was usually just a white background with the title I believe.
@Kitty: Prior to today I was only aware of the US covers of Final Fantasy games (never been a big FF fan), which are extremely ornate designed to give an "epic movie" look. I definitely like the idea of the logo on white background, though. It makes it look classy (that, and the logos of Final Fantasy games are always very good in my opinion)
@RockyRan: Yeah. Japanese sleeves are pretty minimalist like this. It makes sense. A Japanese gamer probably knows exactly what they're getting when they buy a Final Fantasy game. In the US, they have to try harder since it's not considered mainstream.
@RockyRan: Yeah that's what I liked about the initial design. American designs are much more in your face and try to capture your attention on the large wall of video games sales.
There's a good chance that in Japan they're still using just the title with the logo for FFXIII though, I can't be certain. Really makes the logos more memorable too when they're not in competition with everything else on the cover.
They were doing good with FFX and XII, giving the rest of the world besides Japan boxarts that contained some nice designs, and not just "Final Fantasy logo on white background", but it seems that's starting to carry over to other regions. I think this mentality has carried over from the majority of Square's Final Fantasy DS games that feature similarly boring boxart.
@Mit: Only america used to get an alternative box art and we were fine with it I don't understand why we have to get the same cover as the american version while all the other main titles are with the normal logo.
In that case, I hope my American boxart does not look like this _ This isn't even as classy as the older boxarts that just had the logo on them (featuring enlarged Yoshitaka Amano art at most). The big CG art of Lightning kind of breaks that up for me.
God, it's like some of you guys complaining about this box art have never bought a FF game before.
Almost ALL of the Japanese covers have been white with the FF logo - that's it. Ditto for the Euro covers, which are often just the Japanese ones. This actually has more going on than most.
Doubtful it'll be the US cover anyway, but I actually wish it was. The US FF covers too often cheese it up and dumb it down.
FF is supposed to be a classy game, it should have a classy cover treatment.
Damn... Why couldn't they keep it in theme with the other PAL versions were it was strictly the logo of each game on the cover with a plain white background, it was nice and clean that way D:
One thing is wierd though, in the 360 cover, because the boxes are taller, you see more of Lightning than in the PS3 cover, I wonder why they didn't have each box show the same amount, but just proportion her smaller on the PS3 box to fit in.

Buuuuuuuut. I'm sure NA will get something a little bit more baroque.

On the other hand, I wouldn't like an overly ornate cover that ends up making the case look gawdy. Sometimes less is more.
