@Hobb3z: Well, there are tons of other F2P MMO's out there. I would personally like to see a weekly Top-20 regional MMO, and worldwide.
The big 3 are an important cog in the industry, so anything released by either Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo is likely to be covered and reviewed by the rest of the game industry.
The reaction to Free Realms really surprised me. It seemed like a cheap attempt to cash in on RuneScape's popularity...but people really seem to be embracing it. Is it that good? Should I be looking forward to the PS3 version when it comes out?

I'm all for free vanity items as prizes for these things, but I think MMOs should all follow Blizzard's policy, where no prizes or giveaways will give players any sort of advantage or anything that would otherwise have required them to complete quests/missions in the game.
So you can give away vanity pets, mounts, shirts, whatever. But no free money, weapons, armor, or anything else that the average player would have to work for.
Of course, this is already the kind of MMO I can't stand, where most of the better content can be seen not by investing time or effort into the game, but through microtransactions. I much prefer MMOs where all players are on an even playing field.
@QualityJeverage: But inherently all players are NOT on a level playing field in an MMO. Time is the most precious resource in the type of game you describe, and some of us don't have as much as others to invest.
No such thing as an MMO with a level playing field. Sorry.
My roommate seems to like it a lot. Sadly, my computer lacks PC gaming capabilities at the moment, but if the PS3 version is free when it comes out, I'll give it a try.
@Archaotic: There's a PS3 version coming out? I had no idea. Somehow, the idea of this on a console is fairly attractive. I guess it's more how I was hoping Home would turn out.
Yeah, it was announced for PS3 alongside the PC version, the PS3 version actually is going to have more content, probably since it's "shipping" with one or two of the expansions packed in.

Congrats to the Wizard101 team!

And why doesn't Kotaku ever cover info on the other Free to play MMO's? Kinda biased.

One of my friends apparently sent me an IM at 4:10 AM last night, inscribed:
"so what do you think of 'Free Realms' im trying it out right now...out of sheer boredom...not sure what to name my character though"
I do not want to be sent IMs at God forsaken hours of the night while I'm in slumberland asking about my thoughts on Free Realms Online! Make it stop!

On a sidenote: free is mostly good... some noticeable exceptions arise.

...or unimpressed, considering that the first one million could be making more accounts just to get gear.
In either possibility that may be the case, nice job SOE! *clap, clap, clap*

SOE released this statement: We thank Mike Fahey from Kotaku for being one of our loyal users with more than 37 characters in his account alone.
(Keep going till they reach a billion I say)

It was okay in Second Life, but when it starts creeping over into games designed for 13-17 year olds...
