Sony didn't have many stats to boast about this year. But read on to double-check the four claims made during Sony's E3 08 press conference.

Claim 1: 1.8 million PS3s, 1.6 million PSPs and 1.5 million PS2s sold in the this year.
Not sure. Annual U.S. sales as of April 2008, according to NPD Group, were .99 million for PS3, .95 million for PS2, and .96 million for PSP.

Claim 2: More than 1.9 million songs sold via the SingStore worldwide.
Sounds false. SingStore's got around 200 songs online. That would mean each one has been downloaded more than 9,000 times!

Claim 3: More than 20 million pieces of content downloaded in June, and 180 million downloads since launch.
Sounds high. This is what Jack Tretton said in February 2008: "Playstation Network total downloads exceeded 6.3 million in February 2008, compared to 6.6 million at the peak of the holiday season in December 2007." From 6.6 million in February to 20 million in June? Impressive, if true.

Claim 4: Most PS3 games don't use even 80 percent of the SPUs.
True. Although MGS4 used almost all of the PS3s power, according to Kojima, the majority of games for the system likely do not.

<![CDATA[Fact-Checking Nintendo's E3 Presser]]>

Nintendo has plenty of stats to boast about this year, with DS and Wii holding the top two spots in hardware sales. 200k DS sold per day in Europe? DS and Wii hardware sales are over $5 billion? Read on for a fact-check of the 5 claims made at Nintendo's news conference earlier today.

Claim 1: European consumers are buying 200k Nintendo DS per week.

True, most likely. Nintendo was selling 14k DS per day back in January 2007. And the DS juggernaut has continued to grow. 200k per week means over 10 million DS units sold in Europe this year.

Claim 2: The Wii version of Guitar Hero III is outselling all others.

True. Wii Guitar Hero III has been the top selling version of the game for at least the past six months, and the only SKU of Guitar Hero in the top 10 for much of that time.

Claim 3: Sales of DS surpassed 20 million.

True. DS sales in the U.S. alone represent 10 million units. See claim 1 to find the other 10 million.

Claim 4:The DS and Wii sales combine to represent more than $5 billion at retail

True. The Wii has sold over 10 million units, add 20 million worldwide for the DS, and do the math: 10 million units x $250 is $2.5 billion; 20 million units x $130 is $2.6 billion. That means $5 billion is a tad too low!

Claim 5: Nineteen third party games have exceeded sales of 400k units.

True, but boastful. Without any context to compare this number with other consoles, which have more third-party support, it's hard to tell whether this is an impressive number or not.

<![CDATA[Fact-Checking Microsoft's E3 Presser]]> As is typically the case with these types of events, context is very important when you're considering the truth of a company's boast. While Microsoft didn't outright fudge or falsify any claims, there were a couple instances where they were saying one thing and hoping you would think another.

Following the jump, a rundown of seven claims made at Microsoft's news conference earlier today. Brian Ashcraft and I did the fact checking.

Claim 1: The biggest sellers are on Xbox 360, and the Xbox 360 is home of the biggest blockbusters. "With last years performance we proved that the Xbox 360 delivers the biggest and best hits."
True. Well, sorta. Halo 3 was the top selling title of 2007 (moving 4,820,000 copies), beating out Wii Play (which shifted 4,120,000). Looking at last year's top ten selling titles, four them were Nintendo titles, five of them were multi-platform and only one was an Xbox 360 exclusive, which was of course Halo 3. Nintendo exclusives tally up to 10.9 million in sales.

Claim 2: Fall Out 3, Resident Evil 5 and Gears of War 2. Together they represent half a billion in potential sales.
Speculation. Also, only Gears of War 2 is an Xbox 360 exclusive.

Claim 3: Xbox 360's install base is 5 million units more than the PS3's.
True.

Claim 4: According to Don Mattrick, the Xbox 360 is "outselling the Wii and the PS3 combined."
True, but...context is important. Mattrick is citing the fact that Xbox 360, as of May Xbox 360 has sold 10.27 million units in the United States. While Wii has sold 10.20 million units (not 8.8 million) in the USA through May. That covers the entire lifetime of the console, whole numbers. Xbox 360 of course was released before the Wii and well before the PS3, and so has a head start in whole-number sales and install base. The top selling console since its introduction is undoubtedly the Wii.

Claim 5: There's been 2.2 billion in third party sales in last 12 months.
True.

Claim 6: There's a new Xbox LIVE member every five seconds.
Hrm... That would mean 17,280 new members sign up every day. And 6,311,520 members would sign up in a 365.25 day calendar year. According to Microsoft's numbers, there are 12 million members globally. That would mean that in two years, Xbox LIVE would have 12 million members — never mind that it's been around since November 2002. Seems like Microsoft is neglecting to mention Xbox LIVE turnover.

Claim 7: Microsoft is registering their biggest year ever, says Mattrick.
True. Meaning that the Xbox 360 is finally turning profitable.
