I don't know about in Surry, NC, but here in Virginia a flavor-savor is a mustache. The reason is because when you take a sip of beer, some of the beers gets soaked up into the 'stache, which you can then sucke out with your lower lip. Thus, you have "saved the flavor to savor later" of that beer or whiskey, what-have-you. Hence, flavor savor.

The first person is through the character's eyes. The third person is a removed perspective.

It's a damn third person shooter. It shouldn't have to be pointed out.

@Gorilla Snow is hot for Snorlax.: Lighten up about what? He made a mistake, I'm correcting him, you're telling me not to bother because it's trivial. I'm as entitled to call him out on his mistake as he is to make it, you're entitled to tell me I'm being trivial - it's a fine and fancy freedom that this place enjoys. But you can't tell me I can't say it, you can't suggest I shouldn't say it.

This place doesn't need to be policed. And certainly not over something so trivial as a genre misnomer. :/ Owen isn't the sort that would want that mistake to last, and it's also a trend that many others have shown when discussing the genre of Gears of War. It's ignorance, and I think it deserves pointing out, but the only one who thinks it's being treated like a holy war here is you.

@Maldron: Last time I played, the perspective shift in and out of 3rd person to first person. So, no, it isn't a purely 3rd person shooter.

@stupid_mcgee: simply the stupidest: It's 3rd person. Occasional shifts to a first person perspective wouldn't make it a FPS anymore than Metal Gear Solid, Moonwalker, or Battletoads.

@Kobun: The point is, it has multiple view-point shifts that switch from first to third person. Ergo, it's not a purely 3rd person shooter either, now is it?

You can't really call it a "shooter" because that genre is widely understood to be games like Gradius and Raiden. While it is "technically" not an FPS, it is widely understood to fall under that genre.

@stupid_mcgee: simply the stupidest: Disagree, given that the first-person parts are strictly limited to the sniper rifle usage, no different from Metal Gear Solid. Again, the convention is that you go with the dominant trait when categorizing just about anything, and for Gears of War that'd be 3rd person. I personally cannot play FPS games due to vertigo, and having played through Gears of War 2 without incident, I'd certainly say that it has minimal first-person viewpoint usage.

Personally, I'd say it's an action-adventure game. I don't see why people need to invent new genres when the game is doing the same thing as others before it (ie., the "survival horror genre," which is nothing more than an adventure game with a horror setting and gory elements). A shooter is a shooter as you say, but modern thinking now has twisted it to mean just about any game with a guy and a gun, to the point where the generally accepted genre definition is that of the misunderstood/revised convention. Pointless genre bastardization is a pet peeve of mine, but I'll live. :p
